The Plane tree, also known as the Oriental Planetree, is a large, wide-spreading, and long-lived deciduous tree native to Greece. It has broad leaves from which its name is derived, and bears small flowers in balls. Plane trees are typically found in wetland habitats near rivers and lakes, and many old trees can be found in Greek village squares where springs once were, providing meeting places for children. The tree has proven capable of surviving in dry soils once established.
