THABA-TSEKA CAMPUS
Trees are very important ,as the biggest plants on earth , they give us oxygen , absorb carbon-dioxide that is harmful for human breath ,
stabilizes the soil and give life to the world’s life . They also provide us with the material for tools and shelters . Some trees also help people
with medicine as some diseases are cured with them . Not forgetting that even papers can be done with some trees.
WE SHALL FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING TREES
1.Blue gum
2.Roses
3.Peach trees
4.Pine trees
5.Privet
BLUE GUM
Eucalyptus globules' , commonly known as Southern blue gum is a species of tall , evergreen tree endemic to South Eastern smooth bark , juvenile leafs that are whitish
and waxy on the lower surfaces , ,glossy green ,lance-shaped adult leafs , glaucous rubbed flower buds arranged singly or in group of three or seven in leaf axils , white
flowers and woody fruits.
From this tree , eucalyptus oil could be extracted . The oil has therapeutic , perfumery , flavoring , antimicrobial and bio pesticide properties . The oil is available as an
essential oil that is used as a medicine to treat a variety of common diseases and conditions including nasal congestion , asthma , and as a tick repellent . Diluted
eucalyptus oil may also be applied to the skin as a remedy for health problems such as arthritis and skin ulcers .
There is a tea called Tasmanian made from blue gum leafs . It is used as a herbal tea .
ROSES
They are erect , climbing , or trailing shrubs , the stems of which are usually copiously armed with prickles of various shapes and sizes commonly called thorns . The leafs Are alternate
and pinnately compound e.g. feather formed usually with oval leaflets that are sharply toothed .
Their flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy , ranging from white through yellows and reds . Most species are native to Asia with smaller numbers native in
EUROPE , North America , and North Western Africa .
Species cultivate and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant . Roses have acquired cultural significance in many societies . Roses plant range in size from
compact miniature roses , to climbers that can reach seven meters in height . Different species hybridize easily and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden
roses .
PEACH TREES
These are trees that provide us with fruits namely PEACHES . There is a wide range of peach trees that differ in size and fruits they bare . Small to medium-sized peach trees seldom reach 6.5
meters (21 feet) in height . Under cultivation , however they are usually kept between 3 and 4 meters (10 and 13 feet) by pruning . The leaves are glossy green , lance-shaped and long
pointed ; they usually have glands at their bases that secretes a fluid to attract ants and other insects . The flowers , borne in the leaf axils , are arranged singly or in groups of two or threat at
nodes along the shoots of the previous season’s growth . The five petals , usually pink but occasionally white , five sepals , and three whorls of stamens are borne on the outer rim of the short
tube , known as the hypanthium , that forms the base of the flower .
Peach trees should be planted while they are dominant typically in late winter or early spring (depending on the climate) . In regions where grounds freezes n winter , hold off on planting
until the soil has thawed and ground is no longer waterlogged from snowmelt or heavy spring rains.
PINE TREES
These are any conifer shrub or tree species from the pinus genus of plants – a group that includes more than 120 species worldwide . These are evergreen conifers , woody plants that bear
seeds cones and which have bundles of needles rather than the broad leaves commonly found on deciduous trees .
Almost all species of pine are close to each other .They slightly differ in properties of color , hardness , workability , and rod resistance . They are used based on their properties . Pine wood is
known for it’s availability , durability , workability as well as great appearance .
USES OF PINE WOOD
1.FURNITURE
Pine wood can be a great choice for furniture projects . It is known for resistance and stiffness to shock even after soft wood . Many cabinet makers prefer to use knotty pine wood and
plywood . Although it can be a bit expensive compared to plywood
2.MOLDING AND TRIM
Being a pine softwood , it is very easy to work with . Therefore it is considered suitable for window and door frames , baseboards , cabinet trim , chair rail , and picture frames .
3.FLORING AND DECKING
Pressure –treated pine wood can also be an affordable option . If it is taken care of regularly , then it’s life span can be around 15 years or more .
There are many things that can be done with pine wood because of it’s properties , though not all of them have been mentioned above .
PRIVET TREES
A privet is a type of shrub with dense and vibrant green leaves . Also known as botanical name , Ligustrum , privet is
often used around the perimeter of a yard as a natural privacy barrier . Privet hedge can grow upward of 15 feet with
regular maintenance , making them the perfect fence alternative
Aside from being aesthetically pleasing , there are several practical reasons you should consider adding privet
hedges to your yard . Along with lush greenery , privet hedges bloom beautiful and fragrant white flowers in the late
spring and early summer
INCONLUSION
Soil just might be the most important and valuable resource on earth , and trees play a vital role in creating and protecting it .
Forestry intern , BEN , explains how forestry prevents soil erosion , improve soil health and even help create it .
Trees prevent soil erosion in several ways
-They intercept rainfall which stops splash erosion.
-They reduce the amount of water in soil through transpiration.
-Their roots bind soil sloping ground .
-They break the wind preventing it from blowing soil away.
