The pituitary gland, also known as the hypophysis gland, is located at the base of the brain. It is divided into two parts: the anterior pituitary and posterior pituitary. The anterior pituitary regulates several other endocrine glands by secreting growth hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and prolactin. The posterior pituitary stores and releases antidiuretic hormone and oxytocin, which are synthesized in the hypothalamus. The pituitary gland plays an important role in regulating many physiological processes in the body through its secretion of various hormones.
