This document discusses steel portal frames, which are low-rise structures used for industrial and warehouse buildings. They consist of columns connected by horizontal or pitched beams via moment-resisting connections. This allows the frame to act as a single structural unit and reduces bending moments in the beams. Pin joints are introduced to overcome rotational stresses from the beams to the columns. The document then discusses loads on portal frames, proper joint and foundation design, and bracing requirements. It provides specifications for typical steel sections used in portal frames and dimensions. Finally, it summarizes the steel portal frame roof design of the Turbhe Railway Station in India, which features an 84-meter long semi-circular ribbed arch roof.
Coffered ceilings and slabs are rigid, planar structures that use a series of intersecting ribs to distribute loads across a space. The document discusses the history and architectural uses of coffered ceilings. It also describes different types of coffered slab structures like waffle slabs and drop slabs that are used for their load bearing capacities in long span structures like schools and hospitals. Various coffered slab construction techniques are outlined, including the use of precast elements and how services can be run through the coffered spaces.
The document provides a site analysis for a proposed district hospital project in Phagwara, Punjab, India. The site is located on 5.2 hectares of land and has a humid, subtropical climate. Folded plate structures are assemblies of flat plates connected along their edges that form a rigid structural system capable of carrying loads without internal beams. Engineer Eudene Freyssinet performed the first roof with a folded structure in 1923. Folded structures mimic systems in nature like leaves and insect wings. Their structural behavior depends on factors like the folding pattern and connection of planes. Folded structures have applications as roofs, walls, floors, and foundations and provide advantages like lightness and long spans but also challenges like complex formwork. Examples include the US Air Force Academy Chapel and structures in Bangladesh.
Portal frames are low-rise structures comprising columns and horizontal or pitched rafters connected by moment-resisting connections. They provide clear unobstructed spans and are efficient for enclosing large volumes, making them useful for industrial, commercial, and agricultural buildings. Girder-slab systems combine a structural steel frame with prefabricated concrete girders and slabs for fast construction of mid-to-high rise buildings. Shell structures are thin curved concrete structures that function as both structure and enclosure through their strength and rigidity provided by their form. Common shell structures include folded plate, barrel vaults, and domes of revolution.
The document discusses proposals for civic centers in different locations. It summarizes the key elements and purposes of civic centers. Civic centers are intended to serve as the administrative and cultural hub for a community, containing government offices, convention spaces, recreational facilities, and open spaces. The proposals aim to make these centers accessible, sustainable, and iconic landmarks that bring people together and support the community.
Waffle slab or ribbed slab is a structural component with a flat top surface and grid-like bottom surface containing perpendicular ribs. It has two-directional reinforcement and is used for large spans to avoid many interior columns. The waffle shape is formed by placing pods on the formwork before pouring concrete, leaving ribs containing reinforcement. Waffle slabs provide stiff, lightweight structures suitable for areas requiring low deflection and vibration control like airports and hospitals.
The document discusses space frames, which are lightweight, truss-like structures constructed from interlocking struts in a geometric pattern. Space frames can span large areas with few interior supports by transmitting loads through tension and compression along the length of each strut. They are made of steel or timber and can be used for applications like sports arenas, assembly halls, airports, and workshops. Space frames come in single, double, or triple layer configurations and use node connectors to link the elements. Their advantages include being light, stiff, economical to construct, and allowing freedom of longer spans. Their disadvantage is they can be difficult to engineer due to complex force distributions.

Applications of artificial Intelligence in Mechanical Engineering.pdfAtif Razi
Historically, mechanical engineering has relied heavily on human expertise and empirical methods to solve complex problems. With the introduction of computer-aided design (CAD) and finite element analysis (FEA), the field took its first steps towards digitization. These tools allowed engineers to simulate and analyze mechanical systems with greater accuracy and efficiency. However, the sheer volume of data generated by modern engineering systems and the increasing complexity of these systems have necessitated more advanced analytical tools, paving the way for AI.
AI offers the capability to process vast amounts of data, identify patterns, and make predictions with a level of speed and accuracy unattainable by traditional methods. This has profound implications for mechanical engineering, enabling more efficient design processes, predictive maintenance strategies, and optimized manufacturing operations. AI-driven tools can learn from historical data, adapt to new information, and continuously improve their performance, making them invaluable in tackling the multifaceted challenges of modern mechanical engineering.

Prediction of Electrical Energy Efficiency Using Information on Consumer's Ac...PriyankaKilaniya
Energy efficiency has been important since the latter part of the last century. The main object of this survey is to determine the energy efficiency knowledge among consumers. Two separate districts in Bangladesh are selected to conduct the survey on households and showrooms about the energy and seller also. The survey uses the data to find some regression equations from which it is easy to predict energy efficiency knowledge. The data is analyzed and calculated based on five important criteria. The initial target was to find some factors that help predict a person's energy efficiency knowledge. From the survey, it is found that the energy efficiency awareness among the people of our country is very low. Relationships between household energy use behaviors are estimated using a unique dataset of about 40 households and 20 showrooms in Bangladesh's Chapainawabganj and Bagerhat districts. Knowledge of energy consumption and energy efficiency technology options is found to be associated with household use of energy conservation practices. Household characteristics also influence household energy use behavior. Younger household cohorts are more likely to adopt energy-efficient technologies and energy conservation practices and place primary importance on energy saving for environmental reasons. Education also influences attitudes toward energy conservation in Bangladesh. Low-education households indicate they primarily save electricity for the environment while high-education households indicate they are motivated by environmental concerns.
