What Is phulkari?
The word Phulkari literally means “flower-embroidery”. The art
of Phulkari originated in 15th century AD in Punjab, a north Indian state in
India. Most of the women in small towns and villages are busy creating
amazing Phulkari shawls, dupattas and other garments
Phulkari, creation of flowers, is one of the most colorful and vibrant
embroideries of India. Practiced in the state of Punjab, it has its origins in the
fifteenth century. Its origins are traced back to Persia and first mention of this
extraordinary craft is made in the love ballad of ” Heer Ranjha”.
The phulkari is an art of embroidery as well as the creation itself is also called
the phulkari. Mostly duppattas (huge stoles) are embroidered with the
phulkari stitch. However anything from bags to cushion covers can bring a
spark of colour with this unique craft.
Its an amalgam of cotton and silk. The cloth used is usually hand woven thick
cotton, called ‘ khadder’. While the threads are thin, lustrous and breakable
silk, called ‘pat’. The cloth is usually dyed red, but can be white, grey or black
also. And the treads are a myriad of colors, ranging from the rich dark pink to
soothing off-whites.
The stitch is intricate, small and completely fills the cloth. The stitch can be
vertical, horizontal or diagonal to create the shadow effect. The designs and
patterns can vary from geometrical figures to flowers to local fauna. Peacocks,
elephants, birds and camels appear frequently.
There are many different variations in Phulkari: chope, meenakari,
surajmukhi, pachrangabagh etc. but the most common remains the bagh
which at one time was considered auspiciousand compulsory partof wedding
trousseau of a bride in Punjab.
