PHRASAL VERBS
 To warm up, tell me if you know anything about Tutankhamun, Egyptian pyramids, pharaoh, and
particularly about the curse of Tutankhamun.
 To help you:
The ancient Egyptians thought of their pharaohs as Gods. When they died, the Egyptians
preserved the bodies, which were called mummies and were buried in pyramids. The Egyptians
buried many valuable items with the bodies for pharaohs to use them in the next life. They
designed the pyramids to stop thieves from breaking into them. In some cases, a curse was placed
on the entrance. This meant that if anyone broke into the tomb, they would soon die.
Tutankhamun was a pharaoh of Egypt. He died in 1352 BC. He is famous because his tomb was
found in its original state. The man who provided the money to search for Tutankhamun died
soon after its discovery and many people believed this was a result of the curse.
Howard Carter (1874 – 1939) was a British archeologist. He and his team were the ones who
discovered a closed doorway. Above the doorway, in the stone, they found the name
Tutankhamun.

 After reading match the underlined words with the definitions given in 7 c.
HOMEWORK: Use the following phrasal verbs in sentences of your own:
talk into, call off, come across, pass away, tie in with, start out, go out, pay off.
Also, do exercises under Check Your Progress on page 81, in order to assess
the progress you have made after Lesson 10 – Mysterious places.

The Egyptians buried many valuable items with the bodies for pharaohs to use them in the next life. They designed the pyramids to stop thieves from breaking into them. In some cases, a curse was placed on the entrance. This meant that if anyone broke into the tomb, they would soon die. Tutankhamun was a pharaoh of Egypt. He died in 1352 BC. He is famous because his tomb was found in its original state. The man who provided the money to search for Tutankhamun died soon after its discovery and many people believed this was a result of the curse. Howard Carter (1874 – 1939) was a British archeologist. He and his team were the ones who discovered a closed doorway.
