3. Pronunciation and it’s Importance
● Pronunciation is the way in which a word is pronounced.
● By using the correct sounds when you speak, others can quickly
understand what you're trying to say.
● If you are great at grammar and know many different words, good
pronunciation will help others hear and understand you even more
clearly.

4. What is Phonetics ?
● Phonetics is a branch of linguistics that studies how humans
produce and perceive sounds
● It is a system where each symbol is associated with a particular
English sound.
● We can know exactly how to pronounce a certain word in English.
● It helps in improving English pronunciation and feeling more
confident speaking in English.

7. Types of Consonants Sounds
• Fricatives :Produced by partially obstructing the airflow through the oral
cavity. Eg: f(Full,Friday), v(Vest village), θ(Thought,bath), etc.
• Plosives : Simply a stop. Eg: p(pen, cap), d(door,day), g(green, grass)
• Affricates: Consonant sound that begins as a stop. Eg: ʈʃ(Choose,
cheese), dʒ(Joy, Stage)
• Nasals: Nasal stop. Eg: m(Room, mad), ŋ(King, thing)
• Approximants: a consonant that sounds in some ways like a vowel. Eg:
r(road, ring), w(wall,walk)
8.
9. Phonetic Vowel Symbols
• Vowels are sounds produced without obstruction of the air passage
in the mouth but with the vibration of the vocal cords.
• So all vowels are voiced.
• All vowels can be divided into two main categories: diphthongs and
monophthongs.
10.
11. Types of Vowel Sounds
• Short Vowels: The vowel sounds that are pronounced in a short
form. Eg: æ(cat, nap), ʌ(Fun,one),ʊ(Put,look), etc.
• Long Vowels: vowel sound that is pronounced the same way as the
name of the letter itself. Eg: i: (Need, team), ɜ: (Nurse, heard), u:
(few, fruit), etc.
• Diphthong Vowels: when there are two separate vowel sounds
within the same syllable. Eg: ɪə(bear, beer), aɪ(pride, kid), aʊ
(Mouth,cow), etc.
12. Why use phonemic symbols
The alphabet which we use to write English has 26 letters but
English has 44 sounds. Inevitably, English spelling is not a
reliable guide to pronunciation because
• Some letters have more than one sound
• Sometimes letters are not pronounced at all
• The same sound may be represented by different letters
• Sometimes syllables indicated by the spelling are not
pronounced at all
13. Question
1. How do you pronounce gh in 'enough', 'through' and
'ghost'? (like f in fun, not pronounced, like g in got)
1. How many syllables are there in 'chocolate'?
18. • Simplify big words by breaking them down into syllables.
• Learn when to stress words and sounds.
• Try to Practice your English accent
• Listen to English speakers on audio and talk along with them.
• Record yourself to identify pronunciation weaknesses.
• Read out loud every day to strengthen your jaw muscles.
