DevChatt 2011 - PhoneGap: For Fun and ScienceCameron Kilgore
PhoneGap is a framework that allows developers to use standard web technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build applications for various mobile platforms. It does this by providing JavaScript functions that can access native device features such as the camera, accelerometer, and storage. While PhoneGap apps run in a mobile device's browser, it extends HTML5 capabilities and allows interfaces to be built that are consistent across platforms. PhoneGap apps have access to many device interfaces but performance depends on the browser engine and JavaScript interpreter used.

PhoneGap is an open source tool that allows developers to build mobile apps using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript instead of native languages like Objective-C or Java. It wraps the web view container to give apps access to device features like geolocation and accelerometers. While documentation is still maturing and bugs may exist, PhoneGap is free, open source, and offers developers a way to create cross-platform mobile apps without having to learn multiple programming languages. Sample PhoneGap apps and getting started resources are provided.

This document discusses building voice responsive apps for iOS. It introduces the speaker and provides an overview of key concepts for natural language understanding like intents, entities, context and ambiguity. It then outlines the process for adding voice to an app, including training an agent with domain knowledge, speech recognition on the device, intent detection and entity extraction, and executing the user's request. Appium - Reality check on the world’s leading Open Source Framework for Mobil...Asaf Saar
Appium is clearly the world leading framework for mobile apps test automation. Adoption of Appium is in constant rise, and for the good reasons.
Yet, in many cases those who do their initial steps or even progressing with the framework realize that the world is not that simple, challenges arise, limitations are discovered and one can find himself wondering whether the right decision was taken in investing the time and money into it (yes... open source cost you money).
In this talk we will pause for a while, review why Appium is an outstanding framework, while also do a reality check of the cons and pros of Appium, helping you make the best out of it, or at least have a clear understanding of what's ahead of you.
The document discusses reasons for developing mobile applications for Firefox OS including that it is easy to port HTML5 apps to other platforms like iOS but not vice versa. It also mentions that PhoneGap is a free framework that allows creating mobile apps using standardized web APIs and that Firefox OS development can start by visiting certain websites that help with building and getting a quick guide to Firefox OS development.
- Cross platform mobile app development allows building apps that can run on multiple operating systems like iOS, Android, Blackberry etc using a single codebase. This is done through frameworks like PhoneGap that allow using web technologies like HTML, CSS and JavaScript but also provide access to device capabilities via plugins.
- While cross platform apps offer benefits like being cost effective, there are also challenges around performance, differing platform capabilities and the need to test on multiple platforms. PhoneGap Build helps address issues of working with multiple platforms and SDKs. Developers are advised to take a multi platform approach and be ready for emerging platforms.
Xamarin allows developers to write mobile apps once using C# and .NET and deploy them to iOS, Android and Windows platforms. It uses a unique approach of native UI and performance with code sharing capabilities. Developers get full API coverage of each mobile platform while developing apps in C# instead of Objective-C, Swift or Java. This enables C# code to run on over 2.6 billion devices.
PhoneGap allows developers to build mobile apps using standard web technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It works by embedding a webview component within a native container, and provides a bridge for JavaScript to access some device APIs. PhoneGap has grown a large community and supports many mobile platforms. While it allows cross-platform development, apps are still packaged natively and some limitations remain. The future roadmap includes improved plugin support and new features like web sockets and background services to enhance the capabilities of hybrid mobile apps.

HCL Notes and Domino License Cost Reduction in the World of DLAUpanagenda
Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/hcl-notes-and-domino-license-cost-reduction-in-the-world-of-dlau/
The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. And naturally we’ll explain the new licensing model.
Join HCL Ambassador Marc Thomas in this webinar with a special guest appearance from Franz Walder. It will give you the tools and know-how to stay on top of what is going on with Domino licensing. You will be able lower your cost through an optimized configuration and keep it low going forward.
These topics will be covered
- Reducing license cost by finding and fixing misconfigurations and superfluous accounts
- How do CCB and CCX licenses really work?
- Understanding the DLAU tool and how to best utilize it
- Tips for common problem areas, like team mailboxes, functional/test users, etc
- Practical examples and best practices to implement right away

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
