3. PHARMACY ACT 1948:
➢ “An Act to regulate the Profession of Pharmacy
in India.”
➢ The Act was promulgated in the year 1948.
➢ The Pharmacy Bill 1947, have been passed by
the Legislature received it's assent in on 4th
March, 1948. It came on the Statute Book as
THE PHARMACY ACT, 1948.
4. EDUCATION REGULATIONS:-
● As per the section 10 of Pharmacy Act act 1948,
Pharmacy Council of India with the prior
approval of the Central Government may make
certain regulations prescribing the qualification
required for the registration of a person as a
pharmacist. These regulations are known as
education regulations.
5. EDUCATION REGULATIONS PRESCRIBES:
1. The minimum qualification for the admission to the
course.
2. The nature and period of training which is given to
the student before appearing to the examination.
3. The nature and period of training which is given to
the student after completion of the academic training
but before getting diploma or degree certificate.
4. The facilities to be provided by the institutions for
the students undergoing the course.
6. 5. The facilities to be provided by the institutions
for the students undergoing practical training.
6. The subjects of examination and standards to be
attained therein.
7. Any other conditions for examination.
7. APPROVAL OF INSTITUTIONS OR
AUTHORITY WHICH CONDUCTS
COURSE OF STUDY OR HOLDS AN
EXAMINATION:
1. Application:
An institution or authority which conducts the course of
study or holds an examination for the pharmacist has to
make an application to the Central Council for the
approval of the course or examination.
8. 2. Inspection:
Central Council, on receipt of such application,
deputes it's inspector to visit that institution and
confirm whether those institutions are having the
prescribed facilities for conduct of the course of
study or hold an examination. Inspector then reports
to the Central Council on the facilities available in
the institute for the conduct of course and
examination.
9. 3. Approval:
On the receipt of report of inspectors, if the Central
Council is satisfied that the institution or authority which
conducts the course of study or holds an examination is
in conformity with the education regulations, it may
accord the approval and the said course is deemed to be
approved.
4. Declaration:
Declaration of approval made by resolutions is passed at
the meeting of Central Council and is published in the
Official Gazette.
10. WITHDRAWAL OF APPROVAL:
If the Executive Committee reports to the Central
Council that the institution or authority which
conducts the course of study or holds an
examination does not continue to be in conformity
with education regulations, Central Council may
give a notice to that institution or authority with the
intention of withdrawing the approval.
11. APPROVAL OF QUALIFICATION
GRANTED OUTSIDE INDIA:
1. Qualification in pharmacy granted outside India
can be recognised by PCI. This is applicable to
Indian citizens.
2. Citizens of foreign nationality can be eligible for
registration when an Indian national holding the
same qualification is allowed enter and practice
in that country.
12. THE CENTRAL REGISTER:
➢ Under the provision of Pharmacy Act (1976), the
PCI of India is required to maintain a Central
Register.
➢ Each state govt. has to supply five copies of register
for a state to the Central Council after the first day of
April every year.
➢ The register has to be maintained by registrar of PCI.
➢ Has to be revised suitably from time to time.
➢ Published in the Gazette of India.
