Athletes' beliefs about leadership in elite sport
This dissertation examines leadership in elite Australian rowing from the perspective of athletes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 6 rowers and 1 coxswain about their views and experiences of leadership over their careers. The analysis identified 3 superordinate themes: procedural justice regarding fairness in selection decisions; the value athletes place on experience leaders who have competed; and the importance of authentic support where leaders genuinely believe in and back athletes. The findings suggest leadership in sport is more complex than the coach-athlete relationship and that contemporary leadership models may better explain athlete perspectives.

William Chancey Sumner is a graduate student at Concordia University Chicago studying human movement. He worked for 12 years as a physical therapist assistant at Novant Health. His last research topic explored Pelegrini-Stieda Syndrome, which is calcification of the medial collateral ligament from excessive knee flexion/extension trauma. For his new topic, he wants to explore whether the functional movement screen can predict injuries in active adult populations. He has experience presenting at teaching, graduate speaker, department, regional, and national physical therapy conferences and organizations. In this course, he expects to learn how to find, interpret, and determine types of research and designs as well as understand and report on research statistics in exercise science.

I touch upon the Scientific method, biochemistry research in my laboratory, and the need for leadership in science (STEM). Positively, research shows student-athletes often have higher graduation rates than non-athletes due to improved time management, motivation to succeed, and a sense of community. Participating in sports can also help develop skills that lead to success in future careers. However, the demanding schedule can also negatively impact mental health by increasing stress, and physical health by raising injury risks. While stereotypes suggest student-athletes have academic advantages, research finds they often cluster in popular majors due to scheduling needs, not lower standards. Overall, both the benefits and challenges of collegiate athletics should be acknowledged.
Body Image Differences in Female Collegiate Athletes
This study examined differences in body image satisfaction between female collegiate athletes participating in individual versus team sports. The researchers hypothesized that athletes in individual sports would have lower body image satisfaction due to greater pressure to maintain appearance. A survey of 130 female athletes at Ithaca College found no significant differences in body image variables between individual and team sport athletes. However, higher fear of failure was correlated with lower body image satisfaction across all variables, regardless of sport type. Dr. Sanjay Kumar Sahu discusses identifying and selecting an appropriate research problem. He explains that a research problem should address a gap in existing knowledge, be novel, and be significant and practical. The researcher must also have the necessary skills, data, equipment, time and funding to study the problem. When selecting a problem, the researcher should analyze literature in their field, study recommendations from previous research, and consider problems identified through their experience, classroom discussions, or by surfing the internet. The problem must interest the researcher and be within their intellectual capabilities. Following these criteria helps ensure the selection of a suitable research problem.

- Feedback in sports coaching comes in many forms including verbal, non-verbal, intrinsic, and extrinsic. The literature supports the use of positive and constructive feedback to motivate athletes.
