Pessimist Or Optimist – Which One Are You?

“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity. An optimist sees the
opportunity in every difficulty. - Winston Churchill

It is not uncommon for anyone to be pessimistic about some thing at some point in
their life. As a matter of fact, we all have human tendencies at times that will dictate
such.

By the same token, most everyone will be optimistic, at times, about situations even
when others around them are far from it. Again, human nature plays a lot on these
tendencies.

The difference, however, is this. What good can become of being pessimistic? Little if
any. And at the same time, being optimistic allows for very little room for negativity to
grow!

The pessimistic side will always find fault in given situations. When one looks only for
faults, they generally will find them, even if they have to manufacture it themselves.

The optimistic side will always err on the side of positivity. By the same token, when
one is looking only for the positive in any given situation, then generally they too will
find it. Even if they manufacture the positivity themselves, what’s wrong with that?
NOTHING!

When I first was studying the piano, I recall hearing a particular Mozart Sonata. I was
very much intrigued with learning the piece and asked my instructor to help me learn
it. He replied that it was far too advanced for me, as I had just started studying. I
insisted that I wanted to learn the piece. With reservations, my instructor finally agreed
to work with me on it. I learned the piece, much to the surprise of my instructor.

You see, I didn’t know the sonata was too advanced for me, given my level of playing.
All I knew was that I wanted to play this beautiful song that intrigued me! Perhaps that
is what drove me to become a Concert Pianist, simply not knowing any better!

Life is like that in many ways. Many a dream is extinguished simply by others saying
that is not possible, or you’re crazy if you think that would ever work!

What if every dream that has ever been dreamed was put into action? Can you
imagine where the world would be today?

What if every time someone said “that can’t be done” ten others stepped up and said
“of course it can! We’ll show you how!”

In the immortal words of Henry Ford, “whether you think you can, or you think you
can’t, you’re right!” If both answers are correct, I don’t know about you, but I’m
going to choose the positive!

Now, I’m not trying to sound like a saint here. Trust me, when I say I have had my
share of looking at the negative side of things, I’m not kidding. Otherwise, it wouldn’t
have taken me 35 years to make the decision to start my own business!

I too got caught up in everyone else telling me that there is no way I would ever want
to be in business for myself! I started to believe it myself and did a pretty good job of
maintaining that theory for all those years!

Thank God it is never too late to open your eyes. With each new day comes another
opportunity to rectify what we have done or haven’t done in the past!

What wold have happened if the Wright Brothers had believed everything they were
told about this ridiculous idea of flying? It’s a long drive from the East Coast to the
West Coast! It’s an even longer boat ride from the United States to Europe!

In your life, be it business, pleasure or both, when it comes to being a pessimist or an
optimist – which one are you!
