Personal Ministry Research Paper
Paul David Tripp says, "Personal ministry is not about always knowing what to say. It is not about fixing everything in sight that is broken. Personal
ministry is about connecting people with Christ, so that they are able to think as he would have them think, desire what he says is best, and do what
he calls them to do even if their circumstances never get "fixed." It involves exposing hurt, lost, and confused people to God's glory, so that they give
up their pursuit of their own glory and live for his." Supervised ministry has allowed me to work with others with the hope of connecting others to
Christ on a personal level. In this paper I would like to reflect on the ministry assignments I was given over the past few months and talk about ... Show

The topics on spiritual formation and assimilation in our churches were extremely beneficial. I have come to learn and understand why self–care is
critical for any leader. I never realized how dangerous it is if a person is always saying yes to different meetings and commitments in ministry. I also
discovered the benefits of saying 'no' sometimes to these same commitments. If a person keeps going without taking a pause for reflection or self–care
it is possible, it can have an effect on the individual's health and longevity in ministry. As I learn the importance of self–care to prevent burnout or
stress I am encouraged to teach others the same importance. Lack of self–care can have a grave effect on the church, family, and community. Many
pastors over the years have decided to walk away from the call because they were burned out. It is important that I make self–care a crucial part of my
daily routine now, so when more responsibilities or expectations come my way I would be prepared to handle it better. When it comes to self–care of
our congregation there are times when we miss the boat on taking care of them. The assimilation class on guarding the church's back door has helped
to put things into perspective for me. We were taught how important it is to follow up with the members of the church to make sure they are not
forgotten. We want people to grow in Christ, not become lost and give up because no one ever reached out or followed up with them. One of my final
assignments is to organize a 5K Walk/Run for the church. This activity will definitely bring one aspect of self–care to the

The HS has an overall reliability score of .85. The instrument was given to Kimberly to see if she could be able to meet the demands of pastoring, as
it can be highly stressful. Kimberly reported that a source of stress for her at her current position is dealing with difficult people. The position of
senior pastor will demand that as well. The assessment reports "in stressful situations, hardiness has been shown to be associated with high levels of
well–being." The HS does not have norms reported as of the writing of most recent volume of The Measures of Clinical Practices and Research: A
Sourcebook, Fifth Edition. This is the source from where the instrument was taken. The instrument does, however, report "higher scores indicate more
hardiness." Kimberly's overall raw score on the HS was 171, with a total raw score of 225 available.
Dysfunctional Attitude Scale (DAS) The DAS is a 40–item assessment that measures cognitive distortion. The items of the DAS represent seven value
systems: approval, love, achievement, perfectionism, entitlement, omnipotence, and autonomy. The DAS is a Likert–type scale, from one to seven,
with one representing "totally agree" and seven representing "totally disagree." The DAS has a mean score of 113. Scores range from 40 to 280, with
lower scores equaling fewer cognitive distortions. Kimberly's raw score on this assessment was 177. Kimberly was given this assessment to determine

A. Compare the terms shepherd and pastor. – In the New Testament the bible says, and he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some,
evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers (KJV Ephesians 4:11). The word pastor used here in Greek is ПЂОїО№ОјбЅµОЅ, or poimeМ„n meaning
shepherd, is to tend as a shepherd or as a supervisor; to rule. The truth is, the word pastor(s) is used only one time in the New Testament with the word
being translated to mean shepherd. In today's society we use the word pastor in many different ways to describe the leaders of the church. The word
shepherd is the more appropriate translation for the word. The word shepherd is used at least thirteen times in the ... Show more content on

Amen" (Matthew 28:18–20). On the authority of Jesus Christ Himself, the mission of the church is to win the lost by proclaiming the good news that
Jesus died for their sins. He went to the grave and on the third day He arose again to live for evermore.
B. Analyze how the pastor's priorities coincide with the mission of the church. – The pastor is ultimately the one responsible to have a working
knowledge of the mission, and the set goals of the church. All members of the church are valuable in carrying out the mission of the church, but the
he pastor is the one to pray as the leader of the church, seeking clear direction from the Holy Spirit as to how the mission will be carried out by the
church.
C. Describe how the pastor can control the use of his or her time. – With all of the hectic lifestyles being lived out today...it is essential for a busy pastor
to have schedule to keep from wasting valuable time that can never be regained. When it comes to the mission of God and His church we must set
goals for our own lives. The way to do that is by planning ahead, and making a schedule in advance. The schedule that is made must be planned with
the idea of keeping up with how much time will be used for each activity. Remembering how much you time you will need for prayer, how much time
for sermon preparation, how much time for visitation and so on. The times will have to be prioritized from most to least important,

Importance Of Being A Minister Of Christ Essay
Why does Richard Baxter emphasis the importance of being a minister of Christ?
If there is anything that is to be the characteristic of the reformed pastor it is that his mind and life must bear the image of the servanthood of Christ.
Following after Christ' words, 'I have come not to be served but to serve others and to give my life as a ransom for many'.This is why in his book, The
Reformed Pastor, Baxter is eagerly encouraging those in ministry to know their called identity as under shepherds of the Great Shepherd; and therefore
following the model of Jesus Christ earthly ministry as their personal template for shepherding the Lord's flock.
He does this by first expounding on the meaning behind the title of his work. It is not for those of the reformed or Calvin doctrine, but for all those
in ministry to continually be reforming the character of their lives. This does not mean the reforming that is called to take place is solely found in
the reshaping of the mind through the doctrines of grace, though important. But it is a wholistic reviving of their life; touching every aspect of it and
coating it in the the doctrines of grace; so that, to mirror and live as Christ lived, to be in His likeness. So the reforming of the Pastor is not just for a
micro and personal wholistic change but also for the people of God, causing it to become a macro restyling and clothing in the doctrines of God. He is
called to do this by modeling the transforming power of the Word of God and

Pastor Care: The Core Concept Of Pastoral Care
INTRODUCTION
A proper placement and a conceptualization of Pastoral care would have to be premised on a concise definition of what Pastoral care is thus defined:
In its broader sense, pastoral care refers to the different faculties of service usually executed by a pastor. Some and other denominations of the
Christian faith use the phrase to refer to more specific aspects of a pastor's ministry, such as counseling and visitation. The core idea of "pastoral care"
is that pastors are to care. The word pastor comes from the Latin word for "shepherd." A pastor is to be a shepherd or caretaker of God's flock. "Be
shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers–not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not
greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock" (1 Peter 5:2–3, emphasis ... Show more

Recognizing the tremendous amount of stress and burn–out many pastors experience, there are some ministries that use the phrase "pastoral care" to
refer to ministry to pastors. Secluded locations where pastors can get away for a time, counseling ministries to pastors and their families, and even
the pastoring of pastors are aspects of this form of pastoral care. Perhaps the best understanding of pastoral care is that pastors are to care for us, and
we are to care for our pastors.
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PRACTICAL THEOLOGY AND PASTORAL CARE
Some consider practical theology to simply be a more technical name for the doctrine of the Christian life. Its emphasis is on how all the teaching of
Scripture should affect the way we live today in this present world. The emphasis of practical theology is not simply to contemplate or comprehend
theological doctrines but to move beyond that to applying those doctrines in everyday Christian life so that we "contribute to the world's becoming

Pastoral Care Mid–term
Pastor Sharpe has being the senior pastor of World Conqueror Christian Ministry for about 15 years, and has being the pastor of John and Linda
Redfern for about eight years. The John and Linda Redfern have two teenage children, John Jr and Joshua. John was sentenced on January 8, 2013
to prison for three years on a robbery charges. John was a faithful and active member, served in a number of ministries, such as teacher for Christian
Education, youth leader, as well as, a trustee for 5 years, prior to going to prison. They were a model family for other young marriages.

He had some deep concerns about the static of the family; he is aware that they will need counseling, due to his years of study. His arrival at the
home, he finds Linda in state of disbelief. Healing can only take place when a person comes to the reality of situation. Without any doubt, Pastor
Sharpe knows that every person deals with grief differently. So he allowed each one to share with open on how they were feeling, while he
concentrates on being presently active in listening. He accurately responds with warm words, proper voice tone, and good body language. Pastor
Sharpe advised each one to come in for some one–on–one pastoral counseling, as well as, some family counseling sessions. He recognizes that Linda is
grieving, which is to be expected, because of the circumstances surrounding death of John. This death came as a shock to everyone, even the family.
Grief from sudden death can cost the feelings of numbness and shock, making it hard to come to reality of what has transpired. The mind cannot yet
accept the overwhelming pain, the reality that the person is really gone. Accepting the full reality of the loss must eventually occur or the healing will
be incomplete. (Clinebell, pg.

Essay On Theological Reflection
Theological Reflections
П–Evaluate: Relate the effects of the event on yourself and others involved; describe emotions or images the experience evoked; identify the "heart of
the matter"–what issue or question is raised/is at stake for you?
To describe my emotions as the experience evoked. I was anxious about who will be the speaker for the Youth Group. The conflict betweenpastor
Kevin. The question that I've asked myself was "am I not good enough?" but as I was talking to him, he did express the trust that he had in me. But to
describe my role is pastor apprentice, I did understand my role and responsibility as pastor apprentice but "the heart of matter" was to submit to the
authority, which I have clearly stated to Pastor Kevin that I will submit to both him and senior pastor's decision.
The issue was raised when I was struggling to understand why pastor Kevin did not ask me as the speaker of summer retreat. I was hurt by the fact
that I've heard from the one of Sunday school teacher, not directly from him. I've respectfully asked him for one on one meeting to discuss the
following issue. My anxiety would be high at stake, I could have been depressed by the decision made by pastor Kevin, just like in the winter retreat, I
would be struggling of my identity as a pastor, I would ask myself again if I am good enough to be a pastor, but pastor Kevin explained clearly of what
my role was, its not always about speaking front of people but learn to serve behind the scene. П– Analyze
In this situation, I was disturbed by the fact that I was hearing things from a teacher but not from my supervisor. It was frustrating for me to hear the
news that he is thinking of speaker from the outside the church, without even asking me to be a speaker for Youth Group. I was convicted of my pride
toward my supervisor. Who am I to decide the speaker for the retreat? I was just an intern who is getting supervised. I felt like I was falling apart as a
leader. This could be interpreting as my own greed. I am pretty sure there are pastors that are ready to speak right away if they've received the
invitation to speak front of people. I explore myself through this situation that I still have a lot to improve. I've actually recorded my

The Pro's and Con's of Student Preaching
Introduction
The Pro's and Con's of a student preacher can be very nerve wrecking because of the responsibility of following through with every "I dotted and
every "T" crossed. When writing, preaching and teaching the Word of God it can become very intimidating to anyone who desires to follow in a
league of skillful preachers, pastors and teachers. How can you be original when it appears all of the apparent techniques have been discovered?
Speaking of technique, how should a student preacher apply everything they ever learned from a Bible seminary? These are questions for many
students of the Bible. How do I represent God and still reach the lost souls of our generation and at the same time feed the Believers of Christ so they

Through this survey they found the small church pastor was not as influence by books because their concern was more focused on discipleship.
Whereas the pastor of a larger church was more apt to read more books to get incite on how to continue to grow his church and meet the needs of
the people. Also the survey revealed the different types of influence came from authors, their fellow colleagues and other theology influences.
Also, they discovered pastors of a Pentecostal churches were more conservative in their approaches and would not use the influence of outside
sources. The Word of God talks about the mature saint and the survey also discovered that the age of a pastor will have influence of what is
preached based on experience. Either way modern day preaching has many factors of how a sermon is structured and shared among congregations
at every main service. When you consider how today's modern preacher or teacher compares to the original believers of Christ there is a shortage in
comparison. There could be one factor missing and it's just purely believing in the power of God's word being enough for the people to feed on and
live on until eternity. His word never changes it is the bread of life that will feed any intellectual of our time.

Our Church Has A Teaching / Worship Model For Teenagers
Our church has a teaching/worship model for teenagers that are different from most ministries. Everyone starts worship corporately, which includes
praise and worship, invocation prayer, songs, announcements and greeting. We also recite a Bible creed, after which teenagers are released to continue
their worship separately. The teen worship includes Bible study. One of the purposes for using this model is to allow teenagers the freedom to be
taught in a manner that is more conducive to fostering dialogue. Observing teenagers in the corporate worship, I noticed that they were disengaged.
This detachment presented itself in several ways: some were texting with their cell phones, other were talking among themselves, while others were
looking off into space. Only a few seemed to be involved in the worship by participating or paying attention to the person speaking at the podium. They
followed the prescribed format of the worship as in standing at the designated time, turning to scriptures when directed, and bowing their heads for
prayer. At the point in worship when the congregation moves out of their seats to greet each other, I noticed teenagers actively even joyfully
participating in the segment. Perhaps they enjoyed being able to move about or the opportunity to speak to friends or family members they had not
seen all week. Nevertheless, this short portion of the worship peaked their interest. As the moment came for them to transition to their own worship, they

John Piper Juxtaposes
In this book, John Piper juxtaposes having the mentality of a shepherd over the mentality of a professional. He covers a variety of topics that he seeks
to articulate the most God–exalting view. He states, "We pastors are being killed by the professionalizing of the pastoral ministry. The mentality of the
professional is not the mentality of the prophet. It is not the mentality of the slave of Christ. Professionalism has nothing to do with the essence and
heart of the Christian ministry. The more professional we long to be, the more spiritual death we will leave in our wake. For there is no professional
childlikeness; there is no professional tenderheartedness; there is no professional panting after God." Piper urges us to understand the importance ...

Typically, these genres reek with legalistic notions that stir away from the gospel, but Piper reach to the root of each topic. The focus of each
topic was on God and how he is most glorified. He states, "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. Or: The chief end of
man is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever. Does Christian hedonism make a god out of pleasure? No. It says that we all make a god out of
what we take most pleasure in. My life is devoted to helping people make God their God, by wakening in them the greatest pleasures in Him."
Piper did a remarkable job implementing the glory of God in all the topics he covered. He also did a great job noting how even ministry could get
in the way of our devotion to God. He states, "One survey of pastors asked, 'What are the most common obstacles to spiritual growth?' The top three
were busyness (83 percent), lack of discipline (73 percent), and interruptions (47 percent). Most of these interruptions and most of our busyness are
ministry related, not "worldly." The great threat to our prayer and our meditation on the Word of God is good ministry activity. Charles Spurgeon put
it like this: Those incessant knocks at our door, and perpetual visits from idle persons, are so many buckets of cold water thrown upon our devout zeal.
We must by some means secure uninterrupted meditation, or we shall lose power." This was an eye–opening statement because even good deeds can
become an obstacle to our devotion to God. No task in this world is more important than our devotion to knowing and loving God. Piper did an
awesome job of opening our eyes to the fact that if any of these deeds are place before our devotion to God, then they become our idols. Piper not
only addresses idolatry but sin itself. He does not mince words when he addresses sin. He states, "Sin is intrinsically ugly and outrageous in the
universe. To trifle

Reflection Paper
My regional minister stopped the conversation and asked me, "What did you just say your metaphor for ministry was again?" I replied, with a
confidence I had not felt since I left my high school math classroom, "An empowering agent of hope." Although a year had passed since writing about
my metaphors and functions for ministry, for the first time, I claimed my metaphor to my ordination council not quite a month ago. Through the lens
of empowerment and hope, and within my current context of rural congregational ministry, this semester of considering issues for women in Christian
ministry revealed insights, questions, and growing edges. Joan Chittister, in Heart of Flesh: A Feminist Spirituality for Women and Men, and Katharine
Rhodes Henderson, in God's Troublemakers, crafted a framework for ministering as a female in a rural congregation. Using author Sally Helgesen's
"web of inclusion" (Henderson, 59) as a base understanding for the myriad of interconnections in ministry, Henderson claims that the spectrum of

Why I Became An Ame Ministry
After graduation, I searched for jobs and most of the time I froze up in the interviews. The only interview I nailed was an interview for teaching
position for Duval County School Board. Therefore, I became a part of the teaching profession in the fall of 1998 teaching Biology, Algebra I,
Physical Science, and Chemistry in different years up until 2001. Additional, I was a science adjunct professor for two years atFlorida Community
College in Jacksonville. I started the five year process of becoming an AME ministry with my initial sermon in December of 1998 at Wayman
Chapel AME Church and my pastor was Rev. Mark L. Griffin. The church voted for me to be licensed in the quarterly conference in January 1999. I
was examined by Presiding Elder DeSue in January 1999, examined by the District Conference in February 1999, and examined by the East Florida
Conference of the Eleventh Episcopal District of the AME Church Board of Examiners in April 1999.
Instructors advised me to attend seminary while I was attending the Board of Examiners. They explained I would have a better understanding of
scripture, God, myself, and my calling. Finally, in October of 1999, I was admitted on trial in the Annual Conference of the East Florida Conference
of the AME Church. I entered Candler School of Theology in the fall of 2001. September 11 was soon to follow along with the death of my stepfather.
Death entered my life. I had never thought about death being so final. I began

Essay on Women in Ministry
Women have been involved in Christian ministry since the very beginning of Christianity. It has declined and risen according to the acceptance of the
environment. The two papers addressed in this essay document the rise of women ministers in the Holiness movement as well as the decline of women
in the modern Pentecostal movement. In response to this decline in women in ministry, Courtney Stewart gave points which the UPCI should tackle to
rectify the situation. In Holy Boldness Women Preachers' Autobiographies and the Sanctified Self, the history of women in ministry is addressed. The
excerpt given starts by discussing the pioneers of women ministers–Wesleyan/Holiness groups. It was in the Holiness movement in the late 19th ...

The second paper, written by David Norris, focuses mainly on the history of Pentecostal women in ministry. He gave a brief mention to the emergence
of Holiness women preachers, and then fast–forwards to the Pentecostal movement. Because many of the people involved in the Pentecostal movement
had once been a part of the Holiness movement, women were generally accepted as ministers. However, even here women were relegated to the
margins. They took the broken, burnt out, run down churches that no one else wanted. Many times these women would revitalized a run down church
only to step down, or be shunted aside, so a man could take over as pastor. According to Norris, at the founding of the UPCI nearly 22% of the
licensed ministers were women. This number has steadily declined over the past 50 years until only 3% of the licensed ministers are women. Norris
gives four possible reasons for this: 1. Because women did not learn how to theologically defend their position at the beginning of the movement, they
do not know how now that the climate has changed to where they must defend their calling. 2. There were many more denominations involved in the
Pentecostal movement than just the Holiness groups who were not willing to license women. 3. There are little or no role models who promote women

Personal Counseling Scenarios
I had the privilege of interviewing Jason Hanson, a pastor from Sovereign Grace Church. Exposure of counseling was early for Jason, watching his
Dad oversee the high school ministry. Jason has counseled various couples, parents and teens in and out of Sovereign Grace. He sees his job as an
opportunity to be invited into peoples lives, to serve them and see where they are in life. Faith in the Lord is the core influence that Jason uses in his
counseling and his clients are aware of this at the beginning of every session. Since pastoral counseling is different than clinical counseling, Jason is
very careful not to cross ethical boundaries if physician or professional psychiatric help is involved in the clients case. The goal of a session is to
find where God is in the situation, to gain different perspectives so the client can discover more "hidden" details of their story. Sessions can vary to

A good counselor needs to show compassion, wisdom, care and courage. I have personally been counseled by Jason and he shows all of these
qualities in the most humbled fashion. Many of his strengths were blossomed because of past mistakes. One of the changes that needed to made
during sessions was a time limit, and the sessions needed to be back to back so there would be a consistent time frame between clients. Jason also

with no interruptions. This gives time the client become comfortable with their current environment and to be reassured that Jason is truly listening.

Analysis Of The Book ' Leading From The Second Chair '
The book Leading From the Second Chair discusses what it is like to lead from the second chair. This was a semi–new concept for me. I have always
heard of leadership and know that it is something special, however, I never thought of leading from the second chair. This phrase means being a leader
but not the person in charge. This is something that is foreign to me. I have always though that a leader is in charge of their section and other leaders
are in charge of their section and eventually they come together to put it all together. However, though going through the experience of my internship
and going through this book and leadership class I have learned that this is not the case. When you lead from the second chair you are ... Show more

pastor. A Sr. pastor is over the whole church and untimely is where most people look when they see problems going on in the church. The Sr. pastor
tends to be the face of the church, just as the president is the face for the United States. To be a second chair leader to the pastor you are either an
associate minister, or a small specific type of minister, for example youth, children's, young adults, and so on and so forth. So if you are an
associate minister, at least in the United Methodist Church, you may want your Sr. pastors job but you do not really have any say who will get it
or not, so most of the time you just do not fight with them. If you are a small specific type of minister you more than likely do not want the Sr.
pastor's job because that is not where your calling is or you would not be doing this job. While that is the basis of the structure it is also important to
remember that while the Sr. pastor is over those in the second chair more likely than not the Sr. pastor wants your input on things and wants you to
succeed. If your Sr. pastor does not want you to succeed then you need to find a different job. With that in mind the first chair is not some one that
you should fight with over things but someone you should listen to and bounce ideas off of. I currently use this information while at my internship.

Pastoral Caution
pastoral preacher must not only be attuned to his congregation, but he must be attuned to the world as well. He must know how to make the Bible
relevant. Studying society and the culture can do this. Caution should be taken in the endeavor so that he does not become enticed by the world's
lies. 2. The key components of effective pastoral preaching have been derived from my person study of the content, concepts, and resources in
presented in this course. The first component would be a sense of one call. One must know for sure that the Lord has called them unto salvation and

Condescensive Argument
When you talk to or about your opponent, what might you be tempted to say that would be harmful or worthless?
People tend to pull out the worst with those that are trying to assist them with situations in their lives. When that happens, one may get the notion to
say something that is harmful or out of order that could hurt their feelings. One such incident was when I was talking with my step dad about his
brother. He stated that his brother is stubborn and does not want to take instruction very well. My dad stated that he is tempted to tell him that he is,
"hard headed," when it comes to instructions, to which my dad stated would hurt his feelings. Sande states, "When you are trying to show someone his
fault, keep your remarks as objective as possible. While an expression of personal perceptions and feelings may help someone understand your feelings,
if you emphasize subjective opinions and judgments too much, you are likely to convey condescension or condemnation. Therefore, use objective facts
whenever you can."
Are you trying to believe the best about the other person (i.e., making charitable judgments)? How could you demonstrate that you are doing this?
Dealing with people daily, I try to believe the best about them. There is a tendency to think negative about a person, especially if they tend to complain
or think the worst of a setting. I do my best not to judge them based on the words that they communicate. With my football team, my coaches tell me

The Master's College and Seminary. Pastoral Ministry How to Shepherd Biblically, was written by MacArthur and other faculty members at The
Master's Seminary. It is a guide to the biblical standards of the pastorate. The pastors primary activities based on several scriptures and especially 1 and
2 Thessalonians are examined and addressed throughout the book. (MacArthur 11)
Pastoral Ministry is sectioned into four parts. The first part is on "Biblical Perspectives." When asking, "What is a pastor to be and do?" we must look to

(MacArthur, 70) This writer believes that a pastor must be above reproach. However, an indiscretion prior to being called to the ministry should not
disqualify someone from serving as a pastor. Being above reproach means that there are no current accusations that can be made against the pastor.
(Acts 25:7; 1 Peter 3:16) If there is something that is ongoing or current, that would certainly disqualify and even require the pastor to relinquish his
position.
The book did accomplish its overall goal and was well written. It should be a part of any minister in training's reading list. Pastoral Ministry should
be used as a resource for those already serving as pastors and for those who are in training for ministry and feel called to pastor. However, it is
written to and for men in ministry as pastors. Information for women was limited to being the pastor's wife (MacArthur, 72, 125) or the secretary.
(MacArthur, 307–308) Pastoral Ministry is also written from a Calvinistic viewpoint, which may cause some readers to miss the overall ministry

The Importance Of Motivation In The Workplace
The Importance of Appreciation The goal is to create a healthy workplace where team members receive and communicate appreciation, and where
quality–trusting relationships are built in order to advance the church's values and goals. Chapman and White write about the need for team members
to feel appreciated in the workplace. They explain that the majority of workers do not feel appreciated or are under appreciated. This, according to the
authors, is a major dilemma. They contend that feeling unappreciated or under appreciated is a major reason for high turnover in the workplace.
Chapman and White argue that appreciation meets a fundamental need of all people. They assert that when this need is met, people feel satisfaction and
that will translate in the workplace. Furthermore, by showing appreciation, team members are motivated to continually give their best work. Motivation
is imperative for a successful church. Dr. Bartel (2016) describes motivation as, "The human force that initiates, guides and sustains goal–oriented
behaviors. It is what causes humankind to act to fulfill desired goals." Dr. Bartel insists that motivation comes from within a person, which creates the
desire to do what he wants to do. Similarly, Dr. Beckwith (2016) defines motivation as, "A desire to achieve a goal, combined with the energy to work
towards that goal." In other words, motivation creates an inward drive to accomplish a task, and motivation creates the fuel to finish the

Crisis Care Case Study
Crisis Care There can be a misunderstanding on what the role of a pastor should be. The congregation member that jokes that a pastor works only one
day of the week is making light of the true role of a pastor.
When tragedy hits the families of the church, it is the pastor that is called up to comfort and bring biblical wisdom into a tragic and unfortunate
situation. Again, I Peter 5 lays out the ministry of a pastor is to shepherd his flock. If a pastor is leading his congregation like a shepherd, then it is not
uncommon for sheep to desire for this caregiver to be near them in a time of tragedy. They are looking for a spiritual mentor, but not all pastors are
strong showing compassion.
David Deuel says that, "Upon leaving seminary, many a young man discovers that his love for the Chief Shepherd does not extend to a love for God's
sheep. Without dispute, difficulties in dealing with people is the number one cause for ministry droupouts (85 persent according to one denomination).

The cause for this affair is the same as the affair with sin, a loss of their first love of Christ. Men in this affair do not carryout a sincere love for Christ
or His people, but fall into their own self–ambition or fear of man. In Luke 10, Jesus interacts with two women: one who listened to Christ and one
who was busy working for Christ. Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her
house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she
went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her,
"Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be

The Pastor And Teacher As A Gift
"And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for
the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ..." (Ephesians 4:11–12). This passage in Ephesians establishes the ability to be a pastor and
teacher as a gift. The pastor is often looked at as the face of a local church. This is evidenced by the fact that when people are discussing a church,
someone will almost certainly ask the question: "Who is the pastor of that church?". The pastor plays an important part in a local church. He is
generally looked to as the leader, the head teacher, and the lead counselor to a specific local assembly. But a pastor's not just the leader of a local
church. It's important to examine how the Bible defines a pastor. The word used for "pastor" in Ephesians 4 literally means "shepherd." The same
word is used in 1 Peter 5 when Peter instructs the elders to "shepherd the flock of God." For this reason, we can know that role of elder and overseer
are synonymous with pastor. They are interchangeable terms. Elders were appointed by apostles to be in charge of a local church (Acts 14:23). This
is what Jesus meant when he told Peter to "shepherd My sheep" (John 21:16). Shepherds, naturally, were in charge of the sheep they tended. They feed
them, guide them, care for, and retrieve their sheep. When one thinks about what this illustration entails, we begin to see how the term pastor is

There are various views of women in ministry. Some of these views are very conservative while others are very liberal and then there are those that
trail the middle of the road. There are three major views, The most conservative view is the traditional view. The traditionalists believe that male and
female were created differently and should hold different roles. They hold strong to Genesis 3:16, "Your desire will be for your husband, and he
will rule over you". Another Scripture that this group uses is 1Timothy 2:12, "I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man,
she must be quiet" (Calagna, Paragraph 4). The second view that is a little less traditional is the complimentarian view or male leadership view. This
view does believe both male and female were created in the image of God, but the male is still in authority. The women are permitted to teach other
women, children, and sometimes males if they are under the authority of male leadership (Calagna, Paragraph 5). The third view is pluralism. Those
who believe this view understand that at creation Adam and Eve shared equal authority and submitted to each other. It was the disobedience in the
garden that brought about the curse in which females had to start submitting to males. When Jesus died on the cross, this curse was broken. Therefore,
ministry does not depend on gender but it depends on one's ability and gifts given from God. (Calagna, Paragraph 1) The view that a person

Leadership Stances : Transformational And Servant Leadership
LEADING THROUGH CRISIS
It has been said time and time again that "everyone is either going into, coming out of, or in the midst of a crisis." There are certain crises that can
be expected, while there are those that come as a surprise. Times of crisis demand that one step up to lead. Those who desire to be ready to step up
to the plate during such a time will benefit by being prepared for crises, as well as maximizing any and all resources available to them (Echols, 132).
What can leaders do to be better prepared to face a crisis when it comes, and they will come? Before the discussion continues one must understand that
there are two leadership stances: transformational and servant leadership. Steve Echols notes, "The ultimate purpose of servant leadership is not only
to serve but also to see transformation" (134). When one operates from both of these stances, "transformational leadership results in service, while
servant leadership results in transformation" (135). These stances provide the foundation from which a leader utilizes competencies, of which there are
seven: spiritual, assuring, visionary, decisive, emphatic, empowering, and creative. The context of the leader will determine what competency will be
employed. According to Echols, "Stylistic competency a leader employs should emerge from intimate knowledge of the followers as well as insight
about the prevailing situation (133). This paper will provide a strategy that will apply several concepts form

Clergy Burnout Essay
"Over the past twenty years significant interest and research has focused on the issue of clergy burnout and clergy health. A 1991 survey by the Fuller
Institute of Church Growth reported that 50% of respondents had considered leaving their ministry vocation during the previous three months. In a
2008 survey of 358 parish–based clergy, 13% reported themselves as burned out, 23% as depressed and 45% rated themselves as high or moderate in
emotional exhaustion." (Jackson–Jordan 2013 Online) Clergy Burnout over the past decades has become more common, and a danger to a pastor's

Charles Spurgeon Lectures To My Students Summary
In his book Lectures to My Students, Charles Spurgeon lays out a comprehensive ministerial guide for students and pastors. There is an enormous
amount of energy directed towards the minister's lifestyle, spirituality, and sincerity. Spurgeon makes the case that ministry must be handled with
precision, attentiveness, and truth. He further shares, "What a dreadful thing it will be for me if I should be ignorant of the power of the truth which I
am preparing to proclaim" (2010, Chap. I). The preacher must take great care in managing his own soul before pursuing the heart of others.
A minister must understand that the necessity of prayer, daily personal devotion, and earnestness in studying the word of God is significant. Charles

It is an effective book, which provides meaningful guidance in recognizing, acknowledging, and pursuing the call to ministry. Charles Spurgeon gives a
positive perspective on necessity of prayer, sermon preparation, pulpit etiquette, personal balance, and moral character. He makes a great point in
sharing that ministers should not be artificial or unmanly in their ways. Spurgeon states, "If they saw us, in the putlit and out of it, acting like real men,
and speaking naturally, like honest men, they would come around us" (2010, Chap. XII). Pastors or ministers should make it their mission to be around
the lay members and connect with the congregation.
One of the most important aspect of his book is the focus on preaching Christ. Spurgeon declares, "Brethren, first and above all things, keep to plain
evangelical doctrines, whatever else you do or do not preach, be sure incessantly to bring forth the soul–saving truth of Christ and him crucified" (2010,
Chap. IV). This is the heart of the gospel message and the guide to the lost being

A Pastor Of A Small Church
In preparing to be a pastor of a small church, one must have accepted his or her calling, be trained and be willing to serve the people. Pastoring is a
spiritual work which will lead you to some amazing people if given the chance to lead them. This will truly be a test of your faith as one prepares to
pastor a small church. Some people would say, what must you do to be a pastor? Will Doran Mc Carty tell us that you must be spiritually prepared,
educated on the word of God, have a lifelong commitment to God, growth as a pastor, and cultural aware. Pastoring of any size church comes with
these types of challenges. Those spoken here and some not spoken about. As I cover the different areas of preparation, keep in mind that these are
just a few that must pastors follow. You will not get far if you are not filled with the Holy Spirit and seeking grace and mercy daily.
A spiritual preparation is a must when pastoring. McCarty, D. (1997). Leading the small church, says "A call to preach is a call to prepare." He
also says "Spirituality is personal and not mechanical and rote exercise." This spiritual preparation is an interaction with God and God alone. This
not something that is just done. It is important that time is spent praying to God and listening to what he has for us. A pastor is not in the business of
doing what he or she wants to do but what God has for us to do as pastors. Devotion and meditation is essential to the growth of a pastor's spiritual
preparation. Source of

John Renfro Servant Leadership
Part 2 – Leadership Review
Pastor Renfro, as he is known by those who have had the pleasure to meet him, defines servant leadership as "one of the many models of ministry,
each of which describes how a particular minister understands his/her role and approach to ministry as a vocation, and a way of life." Dr. John
Renfro is currently senior chaplain at Conway Medical Center in Conway, South Carolina. He grew up in simple, rural South Carolina in Spartanburg
County, and he benefitted from a family who had a personal deep connection with God. His simplistic beginning provides the anchor of stability in a
turbulent world for his family and those whom he offers ministry.Pastor Renfro has felt that "ministry grows out of life, the life of an ... Show more

he evolved or grown as a servant leader. He responded, "Each of us follows a circuitous, sometimes difficult pathway in ministry, we learn, we grow,
we become more aware of ourselves as people and as ministers. I am a country preacher, and although I have a wealth of formal education and
training, I continue to grow and evolve daily, as a person, and as a minister." Renfro continues, "the most difficult thing to overcome is our own
tendency to be ostentatious – a lack of genuineness and openness; you need to go deep in faith and in ministry; my own history, as a country
preacher, took a great deal of energy to integrate and allow this to be my greatest strength." When asked what he believed are the advantages
/disadvantages of being a servant leader, Renfro responded, "a strength and advantage would be to possess a non–judgmental presence, to allow people
to be the who, what, and where they need to be in our encounters; the disadvantage in that is some people might consider this position as too
indeterminate, lacking in absolutes." Renfro commented on the partnerships he has forged in his life of servant leadership, starting with being a
Clinical Pastor Supervisor (certified to teach at the graduate level), a Diplomate of the College of Pastoral Supervision, a nationally certified
Professional Chaplain by the Association of Professional Chaplains, and also an Ordained Bishop in the Church of

Factors That Go Into Making A Healthy And Thriving...
There are many key factors that go into making a healthy and thriving ministry. One can picture ministry as a car engine were all the parts and gears
are moving together to reach its destination. If one of the parts or gears fails, the car is going to have a hard time getting to where it needs to be. One
of the most important key factors to making a healthy ministry would to insure proper communication between all staff members in your ministry. If
any communication links are broken, it can have a devastating impact on the relationships between staff members, making it hard to work and grow as
a team.
Ethical Dilemma While the senior pastor was on vacation for a week, it was up to the ministry team to run the Sunday morning service. This would be
the first time the senior pastor has been gone for this long and having the ministry run solo on all areas in ministry for this week. All was going
perfectly that is until the actual service on Sunday. A member of our ministry leader team had said somethings to members of the church at really upset
some of them. We decided for the best interest of the service, that we finished the service and dealt with the situation once the senior pastor returned
from his vacation. As one of the witnesses to the instant I decided to write a email to the senior pastor that I would like to sit down and talk to him
about what took place when he was gone. I told him about everything that ran smoothly, but also about the individual what caused some

When the bigger names and churches receive attention, there is an emotional, theological, and personal impact on the small church pastor. Emotionally,
there should be joy seeing another succeed. If somebody in the same denominational is being successful, it makes sense to be happy for them since
they are being successful in presenting a similar message. However, it may be saddening because the small church pastor is attempting to do the same
thing, but is failing. Theologically, similarly to emotionally, a small church pastor should be happy because it appears that the masses are hearing their

Pastoring and Parenting Essay
The problem with being both a pastor and a parent at the same time is finding and adhering to the distinction between shepherding the church members
and being a father to one's children. A distinction must be made between pastoring a church and parenting one's children because of the nature of each
responsibility which when combined with the other produces a difficult situation. While being a pastor requires a caring heart for one's congregation,
being a good parent requires a love for one's children that is so deep that caring for anyone else pales in comparison. Problems arise when a pastor
cares too much for his congregation or what they think of him and ignores his family in the process. One's family should always come first not ... Show

In a Pastor's home, these may be only the basics; expectations may be pilled on the pastor's kid (PK) to such an alarming degree that many adults, let
alone kids, could not handle the pressure. A PK may be so sheltered that they will have no friends aside from those that are chosen for them. They
may not be allowed to go to a public or even Christian school and instead forced to be home–schooled in an effort to control who they come in contact
with. This desire to have complete control stems from a fear that left to their own devices, a PK will bring "public shame to the congregation or
scandal to the community" (Mickey 22). Usually, when one thinks of a "sheltered child" it is in a negative way as the earlier examples have shown.
However, not all sheltering is bad and within a Pastor's home it may be very necessary for the sake of the family's relationship with each other. The
necessity is shown in the following examples. The father may shelter the kids from certain members of the church when said members make
unexpected visits to the home. The PK may also be sheltered from certain groups or clubs at church so that they are not made fun of for being the
pastor's son or daughter. Those who are outside of the pastor's family may never find it possible to relate to the difficulties faced by the PK and for
this reason, a protective barrier is often times needed.

Elderly Outreach Ministries: A Case Study
For the ministry of my choice, I chose Elderly Outreach Ministries. This was largely due to a scheduling conflict with nearly all other service projects
(I have lab 2 nights a week from 6–9). Therefore, although waking up on Saturday morning is an unpleasant experience, to complete this project it
seemed the best option. But aside from this pragmatic reason, I could not help but feel an emotional attachment to this ministry as well. My
Grandma has been in a nursing home for the past couple months, consequently, I could not help but picture seeing people in that home as in a similar
situation to her. Thus, I decided that elderly outreach would not only provide a fitting time, but also provide a chance to be friendly with older
people in a similar place to my grandmother. When we arrived, I was given a tour by the leader of Elderly Outreach Ministries, Corrina, a junior
majoring in Bio–Chem. The tour was a little awkward since you have roughly 15 people being herded through a small hallway while they investigate
people's rooms like it is a zoo. We saw the dilapidated halls and occasionally aimlessly wandering elderly person. A few people stopped and talked, yet

Pastor Burnout
Introduction
Pastors, also commonly referred to as ministers, or clergy, entering the church ministry profession largely attribute their vocational choice to a sense
of calling (Beebe, 2007; Dodd, 2012; Lee, 2010; Meek, McKinn, Brower, Burnett, 2003; Oleson, 2011). Calling within a pastoral context can be defined
as an obligation to live out a mission, set by God, to work for a purpose other than one's own (Dodd, 2012). Evidently, regardless of the preceding
foundational objective to their professional choice, studies show a high attrition rate amongst pastors, due to stress and burnout (Beebe, 2007;
Dodds, 2012; Krejcir, 2007). Stress is an "event or a series of events that lead to strain, which can result in physical and psychological health
problems" (Corey, et al., 2015, p. 58). Burnout is "a state of physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual depletion characterized by feelings of
helplessness and hopelessness" (Corey, et al., 2015, p. 60). A study by Francis A. Schaeffer Institute of Church Leadership Development of 1,050
pastors revealed telling statistics. For example, 100% of pastors surveyed attested to personally knowing at least one colleague who left the pastorate
due to either burnout, moral failure, or church conflict related stress. Additionally, 90% surveyed stated being... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

is exemplifying authentic leadership. This is not someone being perfect but genuine with youth. Third is the overall goal: transformation of lives. Lastly
there is creating and maintaining genuine relationships with students. These four core principles have been "beacons of light" for youth pastors
/ministries for decades. In chapter one, Cannister claims that when teenagers matter, student ministries will thrive. Cannister begins by showing what
most churches are doing by outlining the "good enough" principle, a mentality and form of organization that states that 80% of youth/parents will be
satisfied with only 20% of the effort, much like a consumer. Cannister, however, advocates for a comprehensive youthministry or a ministry that does
not just focus on safety, what the parents want, or only the Christian community but one that will go out and reach the lost integrating them into the
Christian family. A comprehensive youth ministry can only come about when a church is willing to be involved and when a youthpastor, parents, and

Personal Ministry Research Paper

  • 1. Personal Ministry Research Paper Paul David Tripp says, "Personal ministry is not about always knowing what to say. It is not about fixing everything in sight that is broken. Personal ministry is about connecting people with Christ, so that they are able to think as he would have them think, desire what he says is best, and do what he calls them to do even if their circumstances never get "fixed." It involves exposing hurt, lost, and confused people to God's glory, so that they give up their pursuit of their own glory and live for his." Supervised ministry has allowed me to work with others with the hope of connecting others to Christ on a personal level. In this paper I would like to reflect on the ministry assignments I was given over the past few months and talk about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The topics on spiritual formation and assimilation in our churches were extremely beneficial. I have come to learn and understand why self–care is critical for any leader. I never realized how dangerous it is if a person is always saying yes to different meetings and commitments in ministry. I also discovered the benefits of saying 'no' sometimes to these same commitments. If a person keeps going without taking a pause for reflection or self–care it is possible, it can have an effect on the individual's health and longevity in ministry. As I learn the importance of self–care to prevent burnout or stress I am encouraged to teach others the same importance. Lack of self–care can have a grave effect on the church, family, and community. Many pastors over the years have decided to walk away from the call because they were burned out. It is important that I make self–care a crucial part of my daily routine now, so when more responsibilities or expectations come my way I would be prepared to handle it better. When it comes to self–care of our congregation there are times when we miss the boat on taking care of them. The assimilation class on guarding the church's back door has helped to put things into perspective for me. We were taught how important it is to follow up with the members of the church to make sure they are not forgotten. We want people to grow in Christ, not become lost and give up because no one ever reached out or followed up with them. One of my final assignments is to organize a 5K Walk/Run for the church. This activity will definitely bring one aspect of self–care to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The assessment reports "in stressful situations, hardiness has been shown to be associated with high levels of well–being." The HS does not have norms reported as of the writing of most recent volume of The Measures of Clinical Practices and Research: A Sourcebook, Fifth Edition. • 4. Pastoral Ministry Ray Odom Pastoral Ministries Final Project Essay 1 A. Compare the terms shepherd and pastor. – In the New Testament the bible says, and he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers (KJV Ephesians 4:11). The word pastor used here in Greek is ПЂОїО№ОјбЅµОЅ, or poimeМ„n meaning shepherd, is to tend as a shepherd or as a supervisor; to rule. The truth is, the word pastor(s) is used only one time in the New Testament with the word being translated to mean shepherd. In today's society we use the word pastor in many different ways to describe the leaders of the church. The word shepherd is the more appropriate translation for the word. The word shepherd is used at least thirteen times in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Amen" (Matthew 28:18–20). On the authority of Jesus Christ Himself, the mission of the church is to win the lost by proclaiming the good news that Jesus died for their sins. He went to the grave and on the third day He arose again to live for evermore. B. Analyze how the pastor's priorities coincide with the mission of the church. – The pastor is ultimately the one responsible to have a working knowledge of the mission, and the set goals of the church. All members of the church are valuable in carrying out the mission of the church, but the he pastor is the one to pray as the leader of the church, seeking clear direction from the Holy Spirit as to how the mission will be carried out by the church. C. Describe how the pastor can control the use of his or her time. – With all of the hectic lifestyles being lived out today...it is essential for a busy pastor to have schedule to keep from wasting valuable time that can never be regained. When it comes to the mission of God and His church we must set goals for our own lives. The way to do that is by planning ahead, and making a schedule in advance. The schedule that is made must be planned with the idea of keeping up with how much time will be used for each activity. Remembering how much you time you will need for prayer, how much time for sermon preparation, how much time for visitation and so on. The times will have to be prioritized from most to least important, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Importance Of Being A Minister Of Christ Essay Why does Richard Baxter emphasis the importance of being a minister of Christ? If there is anything that is to be the characteristic of the reformed pastor it is that his mind and life must bear the image of the servanthood of Christ. Following after Christ' words, 'I have come not to be served but to serve others and to give my life as a ransom for many'.This is why in his book, The Reformed Pastor, Baxter is eagerly encouraging those in ministry to know their called identity as under shepherds of the Great Shepherd; and therefore following the model of Jesus Christ earthly ministry as their personal template for shepherding the Lord's flock. He does this by first expounding on the meaning behind the title of his work. It is not for those of the reformed or Calvin doctrine, but for all those in ministry to continually be reforming the character of their lives. This does not mean the reforming that is called to take place is solely found in the reshaping of the mind through the doctrines of grace, though important. But it is a wholistic reviving of their life; touching every aspect of it and coating it in the the doctrines of grace; so that, to mirror and live as Christ lived, to be in His likeness. So the reforming of the Pastor is not just for a micro and personal wholistic change but also for the people of God, causing it to become a macro restyling and clothing in the doctrines of God. He is called to do this by modeling the transforming power of the Word of God and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Pastor Care: The Core Concept Of Pastoral Care INTRODUCTION A proper placement and a conceptualization of Pastoral care would have to be premised on a concise definition of what Pastoral care is thus defined: In its broader sense, pastoral care refers to the different faculties of service usually executed by a pastor. Some and other denominations of the Christian faith use the phrase to refer to more specific aspects of a pastor's ministry, such as counseling and visitation. The core idea of "pastoral care" is that pastors are to care. The word pastor comes from the Latin word for "shepherd." A pastor is to be a shepherd or caretaker of God's flock. "Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers–not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock" (1 Peter 5:2–3, emphasis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Recognizing the tremendous amount of stress and burn–out many pastors experience, there are some ministries that use the phrase "pastoral care" to refer to ministry to pastors. Secluded locations where pastors can get away for a time, counseling ministries to pastors and their families, and even the pastoring of pastors are aspects of this form of pastoral care. Perhaps the best understanding of pastoral care is that pastors are to care for us, and we are to care for our pastors. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PRACTICAL THEOLOGY AND PASTORAL CARE Some consider practical theology to simply be a more technical name for the doctrine of the Christian life. Its emphasis is on how all the teaching of Scripture should affect the way we live today in this present world. The emphasis of practical theology is not simply to contemplate or comprehend theological doctrines but to move beyond that to applying those doctrines in everyday Christian life so that we "contribute to the world's becoming what God intends it to ... He had some deep concerns about the static of the family; he is aware that they will need counseling, due to his years of study. His arrival at the home, he finds Linda in state of disbelief. Healing can only take place when a person comes to the reality of situation. Without any doubt, Pastor Sharpe knows that every person deals with grief differently. So he allowed each one to share with open on how they were feeling, while he concentrates on being presently active in listening. He accurately responds with warm words, proper voice tone, and good body language. Pastor Sharpe advised each one to come in for some one–on–one pastoral counseling, as well as, some family counseling sessions. He recognizes that Linda is grieving, which is to be expected, because of the circumstances surrounding death of John. This death came as a shock to everyone, even the family. Grief from sudden death can cost the feelings of numbness and shock, making it hard to come to reality of what has transpired. The mind cannot yet accept the overwhelming pain, the reality that the person is really gone. Accepting the full reality of the loss must eventually occur or the healing will be incomplete. Essay On Theological Reflection Theological Reflections П–Evaluate: Relate the effects of the event on yourself and others involved; describe emotions or images the experience evoked; identify the "heart of the matter"–what issue or question is raised/is at stake for you? To describe my emotions as the experience evoked. I was anxious about who will be the speaker for the Youth Group. The conflict betweenpastor Kevin. The question that I've asked myself was "am I not good enough?" but as I was talking to him, he did express the trust that he had in me. But to describe my role is pastor apprentice, I did understand my role and responsibility as pastor apprentice but "the heart of matter" was to submit to the authority, which I have clearly stated to Pastor Kevin that I will submit to both him and senior pastor's decision. The issue was raised when I was struggling to understand why pastor Kevin did not ask me as the speaker of summer retreat. I was hurt by the fact that I've heard from the one of Sunday school teacher, not directly from him. I've respectfully asked him for one on one meeting to discuss the following issue. My anxiety would be high at stake, I could have been depressed by the decision made by pastor Kevin, just like in the winter retreat, I would be struggling of my identity as a pastor, I would ask myself again if I am good enough to be a pastor, but pastor Kevin explained clearly of what my role was, its not always about speaking front of people but learn to serve behind the scene. П– Analyze In this situation, I was disturbed by the fact that I was hearing things from a teacher but not from my supervisor. It was frustrating for me to hear the news that he is thinking of speaker from the outside the church, without even asking me to be a speaker for Youth Group. I was convicted of my pride toward my supervisor. Who am I to decide the speaker for the retreat? I was just an intern who is getting supervised. I felt like I was falling apart as a leader. This could be interpreting as my own greed. I am pretty sure there are pastors that are ready to speak right away if they've received the invitation to speak front of people. I explore myself through this situation that I still have a lot to improve. I've actually recorded my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Pro's and Con's of Student Preaching Introduction The Pro's and Con's of a student preacher can be very nerve wrecking because of the responsibility of following through with every "I dotted and every "T" crossed. When writing, preaching and teaching the Word of God it can become very intimidating to anyone who desires to follow in a league of skillful preachers, pastors and teachers. How can you be original when it appears all of the apparent techniques have been discovered? • 10. Our Church Has A Teaching / Worship Model For Teenagers Our church has a teaching/worship model for teenagers that are different from most ministries. Everyone starts worship corporately, which includes praise and worship, invocation prayer, songs, announcements and greeting. We also recite a Bible creed, after which teenagers are released to continue their worship separately. The teen worship includes Bible study. One of the purposes for using this model is to allow teenagers the freedom to be taught in a manner that is more conducive to fostering dialogue. Observing teenagers in the corporate worship, I noticed that they were disengaged. This detachment presented itself in several ways: some were texting with their cell phones, other were talking among themselves, while others were looking off into space. Only a few seemed to be involved in the worship by participating or paying attention to the person speaking at the podium. They followed the prescribed format of the worship as in standing at the designated time, turning to scriptures when directed, and bowing their heads for prayer. At the point in worship when the congregation moves out of their seats to greet each other, I noticed teenagers actively even joyfully participating in the segment. Perhaps they enjoyed being able to move about or the opportunity to speak to friends or family members they had not seen all week. Nevertheless, this short portion of the worship peaked their interest. As the moment came for them to transition to their own worship, they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. John Piper Juxtaposes In this book, John Piper juxtaposes having the mentality of a shepherd over the mentality of a professional. He covers a variety of topics that he seeks to articulate the most God–exalting view. He states, "We pastors are being killed by the professionalizing of the pastoral ministry. The mentality of the professional is not the mentality of the prophet. It is not the mentality of the slave of Christ. Professionalism has nothing to do with the essence and heart of the Christian ministry. The more professional we long to be, the more spiritual death we will leave in our wake. For there is no professional childlikeness; there is no professional tenderheartedness; there is no professional panting after God." Piper urges us to understand the importance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Typically, these genres reek with legalistic notions that stir away from the gospel, but Piper reach to the root of each topic. The focus of each topic was on God and how he is most glorified. He states, "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. Or: The chief end of man is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever. Does Christian hedonism make a god out of pleasure? No. It says that we all make a god out of what we take most pleasure in. My life is devoted to helping people make God their God, by wakening in them the greatest pleasures in Him." Piper did a remarkable job implementing the glory of God in all the topics he covered. He also did a great job noting how even ministry could get in the way of our devotion to God. He states, "One survey of pastors asked, 'What are the most common obstacles to spiritual growth?' The top three were busyness (83 percent), lack of discipline (73 percent), and interruptions (47 percent). Most of these interruptions and most of our busyness are ministry related, not "worldly." The great threat to our prayer and our meditation on the Word of God is good ministry activity. Charles Spurgeon put it like this: Those incessant knocks at our door, and perpetual visits from idle persons, are so many buckets of cold water thrown upon our devout zeal. We must by some means secure uninterrupted meditation, or we shall lose power." This was an eye–opening statement because even good deeds can become an obstacle to our devotion to God. No task in this world is more important than our devotion to knowing and loving God. Piper did an awesome job of opening our eyes to the fact that if any of these deeds are place before our devotion to God, then they become our idols. Piper not only addresses idolatry but sin itself. He does not mince words when he addresses sin. He states, "Sin is intrinsically ugly and outrageous in the universe. To trifle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Reflection Paper My regional minister stopped the conversation and asked me, "What did you just say your metaphor for ministry was again?" I replied, with a confidence I had not felt since I left my high school math classroom, "An empowering agent of hope." Although a year had passed since writing about my metaphors and functions for ministry, for the first time, I claimed my metaphor to my ordination council not quite a month ago. Through the lens of empowerment and hope, and within my current context of rural congregational ministry, this semester of considering issues for women in Christian ministry revealed insights, questions, and growing edges. Joan Chittister, in Heart of Flesh: A Feminist Spirituality for Women and Men, and Katharine Rhodes Henderson, in God's Troublemakers, crafted a framework for ministering as a female in a rural congregation. Using author Sally Helgesen's "web of inclusion" (Henderson, 59) as a base understanding for the myriad of interconnections in ministry, Henderson claims that the spectrum of personal to universal lives on the strands of the web (Henderson, 59), with each person existing as their own sphere. I find hope, for myself and for my community of faith, in the interconnectedness and continuum of the web of inclusion. The second paper, written by David Norris, focuses mainly on the history of Pentecostal women in ministry. He gave a brief mention to the emergence of Holiness women preachers, and then fast–forwards to the Pentecostal movement. Because many of the people involved in the Pentecostal movement had once been a part of the Holiness movement, women were generally accepted as ministers. However, even here women were relegated to the margins. They took the broken, burnt out, run down churches that no one else wanted. Many times these women would revitalized a run down church only to step down, or be shunted aside, so a man could take over as pastor. According to Norris, at the founding of the UPCI nearly 22% of the licensed ministers were women. This number has steadily declined over the past 50 years until only 3% of the licensed ministers are women. Norris gives four possible reasons for this: 1. Because women did not learn how to theologically defend their position at the beginning of the movement, they do not know how now that the climate has changed to where they must defend their calling. 2. There were many more denominations involved in the Pentecostal movement than just the Holiness groups who were not willing to license women. 3. So if you are an associate minister, at least in the United Methodist Church, you may want your Sr. pastors job but you do not really have any say who will get it or not, so most of the time you just do not fight with them. • 21. The Importance Of Motivation In The Workplace The Importance of Appreciation The goal is to create a healthy workplace where team members receive and communicate appreciation, and where quality–trusting relationships are built in order to advance the church's values and goals. Chapman and White write about the need for team members to feel appreciated in the workplace. They explain that the majority of workers do not feel appreciated or are under appreciated. This, according to the authors, is a major dilemma. They contend that feeling unappreciated or under appreciated is a major reason for high turnover in the workplace. Chapman and White argue that appreciation meets a fundamental need of all people. They assert that when this need is met, people feel satisfaction and that will translate in the workplace. Furthermore, by showing appreciation, team members are motivated to continually give their best work. Motivation is imperative for a successful church. Dr. Bartel (2016) describes motivation as, "The human force that initiates, guides and sustains goal–oriented behaviors. It is what causes humankind to act to fulfill desired goals." Dr. Bartel insists that motivation comes from within a person, which creates the desire to do what he wants to do. The Pastor And Teacher As A Gift "And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ..." (Ephesians 4:11–12). This passage in Ephesians establishes the ability to be a pastor and teacher as a gift. The pastor is often looked at as the face of a local church. This is evidenced by the fact that when people are discussing a church, someone will almost certainly ask the question: "Who is the pastor of that church?". The pastor plays an important part in a local church. He is generally looked to as the leader, the head teacher, and the lead counselor to a specific local assembly. But a pastor's not just the leader of a local church. It's important to examine how the Bible defines a pastor. The word used for "pastor" in Ephesians 4 literally means "shepherd." The same word is used in 1 Peter 5 when Peter instructs the elders to "shepherd the flock of God." For this reason, we can know that role of elder and overseer are synonymous with pastor. They are interchangeable terms. Elders were appointed by apostles to be in charge of a local church (Acts 14:23). This is what Jesus meant when he told Peter to "shepherd My sheep" (John 21:16). Shepherds, naturally, were in charge of the sheep they tended. They feed them, guide them, care for, and retrieve their sheep. Outline For Women In Ministry Research Paper THESIS: Should women be permitted to lead religious worship, such as music; should women be permitted to be a pastor; should women be allowed to hold a high administrative office; should women be allowed to serve and care for others? Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are various views of women in ministry. Some of these views are very conservative while others are very liberal and then there are those that trail the middle of the road. There are three major views, The most conservative view is the traditional view. The traditionalists believe that male and female were created differently and should hold different roles. They hold strong to Genesis 3:16, "Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you". Another Scripture that this group uses is 1Timothy 2:12, "I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man, she must be quiet" (Calagna, Paragraph 4). The second view that is a little less traditional is the complimentarian view or male leadership view. This view does believe both male and female were created in the image of God, but the male is still in authority. The women are permitted to teach other women, children, and sometimes males if they are under the authority of male leadership (Calagna, Paragraph 5). The third view is pluralism. Those who believe this view understand that at creation Adam and Eve shared equal authority and submitted to each other. It was the disobedience in the garden that brought about the curse in which females had to start submitting to males. When Jesus died on the cross, this curse was broken. Therefore, ministry does not depend on gender but it depends on one's ability and gifts given from God. (Calagna, Paragraph 1) The view that a person ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Leadership Stances : Transformational And Servant Leadership LEADING THROUGH CRISIS It has been said time and time again that "everyone is either going into, coming out of, or in the midst of a crisis." There are certain crises that can be expected, while there are those that come as a surprise. Times of crisis demand that one step up to lead. Those who desire to be ready to step up to the plate during such a time will benefit by being prepared for crises, as well as maximizing any and all resources available to them (Echols, 132). What can leaders do to be better prepared to face a crisis when it comes, and they will come? Before the discussion continues one must understand that there are two leadership stances: transformational and servant leadership. Steve Echols notes, "The ultimate purpose of servant leadership is not only to serve but also to see transformation" (134). When one operates from both of these stances, "transformational leadership results in service, while servant leadership results in transformation" (135). These stances provide the foundation from which a leader utilizes competencies, of which there are seven: spiritual, assuring, visionary, decisive, emphatic, empowering, and creative. The context of the leader will determine what competency will be employed. According to Echols, "Stylistic competency a leader employs should emerge from intimate knowledge of the followers as well as insight about the prevailing situation (133). There is an enormous amount of energy directed towards the minister's lifestyle, spirituality, and sincerity. Spurgeon makes the case that ministry must be handled with precision, attentiveness, and truth. He further shares, "What a dreadful thing it will be for me if I should be ignorant of the power of the truth which I am preparing to proclaim" (2010, Chap. I). The preacher must take great care in managing his own soul before pursuing the heart of others. A minister must understand that the necessity of prayer, daily personal devotion, and earnestness in studying the word of God is significant. Spurgeon states, "If they saw us, in the putlit and out of it, acting like real men, and speaking naturally, like honest men, they would come around us" (2010, Chap. XII). Pastors or ministers should make it their mission to be around the lay members and connect with the congregation. One of the most important aspect of his book is the focus on preaching Christ. Spurgeon declares, "Brethren, first and above all things, keep to plain evangelical doctrines, whatever else you do or do not preach, be sure incessantly to bring forth the soul–saving truth of Christ and him crucified" (2010, Chap. • 31. A Pastor Of A Small Church In preparing to be a pastor of a small church, one must have accepted his or her calling, be trained and be willing to serve the people. Pastoring is a spiritual work which will lead you to some amazing people if given the chance to lead them. This will truly be a test of your faith as one prepares to pastor a small church. Some people would say, what must you do to be a pastor? Will Doran Mc Carty tell us that you must be spiritually prepared, educated on the word of God, have a lifelong commitment to God, growth as a pastor, and cultural aware. Pastoring of any size church comes with these types of challenges. Those spoken here and some not spoken about. As I cover the different areas of preparation, keep in mind that these are just a few that must pastors follow. You will not get far if you are not filled with the Holy Spirit and seeking grace and mercy daily. A spiritual preparation is a must when pastoring. McCarty, D. (1997). Leading the small church, says "A call to preach is a call to prepare." He also says "Spirituality is personal and not mechanical and rote exercise." This spiritual preparation is an interaction with God and God alone. This not something that is just done. It is important that time is spent praying to God and listening to what he has for us. A pastor is not in the business of doing what he or she wants to do but what God has for us to do as pastors. Devotion and meditation is essential to the growth of a pastor's spiritual preparation. • 32. John Renfro Servant Leadership Part 2 – Leadership Review Pastor Renfro, as he is known by those who have had the pleasure to meet him, defines servant leadership as "one of the many models of ministry, each of which describes how a particular minister understands his/her role and approach to ministry as a vocation, and a way of life." Dr. John Renfro is currently senior chaplain at Conway Medical Center in Conway, South Carolina. He grew up in simple, rural South Carolina in Spartanburg County, and he benefitted from a family who had a personal deep connection with God. His simplistic beginning provides the anchor of stability in a turbulent world for his family and those whom he offers ministry.Pastor Renfro has felt that "ministry grows out of life, the life of an ... He responded, "Each of us follows a circuitous, sometimes difficult pathway in ministry, we learn, we grow, we become more aware of ourselves as people and as ministers. I am a country preacher, and although I have a wealth of formal education and training, I continue to grow and evolve daily, as a person, and as a minister." Renfro continues, "the most difficult thing to overcome is our own tendency to be ostentatious – a lack of genuineness and openness; you need to go deep in faith and in ministry; my own history, as a country preacher, took a great deal of energy to integrate and allow this to be my greatest strength." When asked what he believed are the advantages /disadvantages of being a servant leader, Renfro responded, "a strength and advantage would be to possess a non–judgmental presence, to allow people to be the who, what, and where they need to be in our encounters; the disadvantage in that is some people might consider this position as too indeterminate, lacking in absolutes." Renfro commented on the partnerships he has forged in his life of servant leadership, starting with being a Clinical Pastor Supervisor (certified to teach at the graduate level), a Diplomate of the College of Pastoral Supervision, a nationally certified Professional Chaplain by the Association of Professional Chaplains, and also an Ordained Bishop in the Church of ... • 33. Factors That Go Into Making A Healthy And Thriving... There are many key factors that go into making a healthy and thriving ministry. One can picture ministry as a car engine were all the parts and gears are moving together to reach its destination. If one of the parts or gears fails, the car is going to have a hard time getting to where it needs to be. One of the most important key factors to making a healthy ministry would to insure proper communication between all staff members in your ministry. If any communication links are broken, it can have a devastating impact on the relationships between staff members, making it hard to work and grow as a team. Ethical Dilemma While the senior pastor was on vacation for a week, it was up to the ministry team to run the Sunday morning service. This would be the first time the senior pastor has been gone for this long and having the ministry run solo on all areas in ministry for this week. All was going perfectly that is until the actual service on Sunday. A member of our ministry leader team had said somethings to members of the church at really upset some of them. We decided for the best interest of the service, that we finished the service and dealt with the situation once the senior pastor returned from his vacation. As one of the witnesses to the instant I decided to write a email to the senior pastor that I would like to sit down and talk to him about what took place when he was gone. However, it may be saddening because the small church pastor is attempting to do the same thing, but is failing. • 35. Pastoring and Parenting Essay The problem with being both a pastor and a parent at the same time is finding and adhering to the distinction between shepherding the church members and being a father to one's children. A distinction must be made between pastoring a church and parenting one's children because of the nature of each responsibility which when combined with the other produces a difficult situation. While being a pastor requires a caring heart for one's congregation, being a good parent requires a love for one's children that is so deep that caring for anyone else pales in comparison. Problems arise when a pastor cares too much for his congregation or what they think of him and ignores his family in the process. One's family should always come first not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a Pastor's home, these may be only the basics; expectations may be pilled on the pastor's kid (PK) to such an alarming degree that many adults, let alone kids, could not handle the pressure. A PK may be so sheltered that they will have no friends aside from those that are chosen for them. They may not be allowed to go to a public or even Christian school and instead forced to be home–schooled in an effort to control who they come in contact with. This desire to have complete control stems from a fear that left to their own devices, a PK will bring "public shame to the congregation or scandal to the community" (Mickey 22). Usually, when one thinks of a "sheltered child" it is in a negative way as the earlier examples have shown. However, not all sheltering is bad and within a Pastor's home it may be very necessary for the sake of the family's relationship with each other. The necessity is shown in the following examples. The father may shelter the kids from certain members of the church when said members make unexpected visits to the home. The PK may also be sheltered from certain groups or clubs at church so that they are not made fun of for being the pastor's son or daughter. Those who are outside of the pastor's family may never find it possible to relate to the difficulties faced by the PK and for this reason, a protective barrier is often times needed. As it ... • 38. Elderly Outreach Ministries: A Case Study For the ministry of my choice, I chose Elderly Outreach Ministries. This was largely due to a scheduling conflict with nearly all other service projects (I have lab 2 nights a week from 6–9). Therefore, although waking up on Saturday morning is an unpleasant experience, to complete this project it seemed the best option. But aside from this pragmatic reason, I could not help but feel an emotional attachment to this ministry as well. My Grandma has been in a nursing home for the past couple months, consequently, I could not help but picture seeing people in that home as in a similar situation to her. Thus, I decided that elderly outreach would not only provide a fitting time, but also provide a chance to be friendly with older people in a similar place to my grandmother. When we arrived, I was given a tour by the leader of Elderly Outreach Ministries, Corrina, a junior majoring in Bio–Chem. • 39. Pastor Burnout Introduction Pastors, also commonly referred to as ministers, or clergy, entering the church ministry profession largely attribute their vocational choice to a sense of calling (Beebe, 2007; Dodd, 2012; Lee, 2010; Meek, McKinn, Brower, Burnett, 2003; Oleson, 2011). Calling within a pastoral context can be defined as an obligation to live out a mission, set by God, to work for a purpose other than one's own (Dodd, 2012). Evidently, regardless of the preceding foundational objective to their professional choice, studies show a high attrition rate amongst pastors, due to stress and burnout (Beebe, 2007; Dodds, 2012; Krejcir, 2007). Stress is an "event or a series of events that lead to strain, which can result in physical and psychological health problems" (Corey, et al., 2015, p. 58). Burnout is "a state of physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual depletion characterized by feelings of helplessness and hopelessness" (Corey, et al., 2015, p. 60). A study by Francis A. Schaeffer Institute of Church Leadership Development of 1,050 pastors revealed telling statistics. • 40. The Premise Of Cannister 's Book Is That When Teenagers... The premise of Cannister's book is that when teenagers matter, everything changes in student ministry. Cannister uses the introduction to look at four basic core principles that have lasted almost a century. First there is having a clarity of purpose which, without, a youth ministry will crumble. Second is exemplifying authentic leadership. This is not someone being perfect but genuine with youth. Third is the overall goal: transformation of lives. Lastly there is creating and maintaining genuine relationships with students. These four core principles have been "beacons of light" for youth pastors /ministries for decades. In chapter one, Cannister claims that when teenagers matter, student ministries will thrive. Cannister begins by showing what most churches are doing by outlining the "good enough" principle, a mentality and form of organization that states that 80% of youth/parents will be satisfied with only 20% of the effort, much like a consumer. Cannister, however, advocates for a comprehensive youthministry or a ministry that does not just focus on safety, what the parents want, or only the Christian community but one that will go out and reach the lost integrating them into the Christian family. A comprehensive youth ministry can only come about when a church is willing to be involved and when a youthpastor, parents, and youth follow the Great Commandment, Commission, and Charge as outlined in Scripture. Chapter two revolves around the idea that when teenagers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
