1. The Meaning and Purpose of
Personal Management
From “Leadership Handbook of
Management and Administration”
By James D. Berkley
2. What is Personal Management?
• Personal Management means being well (alive
in Christ), Serving well (alive in Christ), and
finishing well (alive in Christ).
3. What did Bobby Clinton, a mentor of
Leaders, has observed?
• “Few leaders finish well.” Many ministers
start well but end up spent, empty, and
discouraged. That’s why personal
management is so needed.
4. What is Included in Personal
Management?
• A good system of Personal Management
includes a number of things to help us enjoy
our life in Christ more and enable us to serve
in ministry week in and week out with vitality,
clear heads, and warm hearts. Personal
Management can help us develop the
attitudes and exercise the behaviors that
enable us to finish well.
5. What Admonish did Paul give to young
Timothy?
• “Watch your Life and Doctrine closely.” Why?
“Persevere in them, because if you do, you will
save both yourself and your hearers” (1 Tim.
4:6).
• The emphasis of Personal Management is
Saving Yourself.
6. What point did Charles Spurgeon
express in “Lectures to My Students?”
• “We are, in a certain sense, our own tools, and
therefore must keep ourselves in order… it will be
in vain for me to stock my library, or organize
societies, or project schemes, if I neglect the
culture of myself; for books, and agencies, and
systems are not remotely the instruments of my
holy calling; my own spirit, soul, and body, and
my nearest machinery for sacred service; my
spiritual faculties, and my inner life, are my battle
axe and weapons for war.”
7. Why should Pastors practice Personal
Management?
• Personal Management for pastors, however,
isn’t so much about career progress or
outward success. It’s more like “I’m managing
to keep my act together.” Or even better,
“God is managing me to keep his act together
in me.” God has something to accomplish
through our ministries, but we need to
exercise the Personal Management to
transform bright potential into enduring
reality.
