Periodontal regeneration is a complex process that requires temporal control of multiple bioactive molecules to guide regeneration of distinct periodontal tissues. Scaffolds for periodontal regeneration aim to mimic the extracellular matrix, guide cell behavior, and sequentially deliver signaling molecules. However, fully regenerating the periodontal ligament and forming new Sharpey's fibers that reconnect the cementum and bone remains challenging. Future work requires better understanding of periodontal biology and integrating mechanical cues to improve functional regeneration of the periodontal complex.
