Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that destroys the supportive tissue surrounding each tooth, leading to red and inflamed gums, bone and gum loss, and inflamed gums that bleed. It can be detected through gum measurements and assessments of gum health. Left untreated, it worsens over time.
