students can see more clearly the connections between what

This clarity helps decrease anxiety about their ability to
succeed. In addition, students build intrinsic motivation
when they set personal learning objectives.” (p. 3 of Classroom

Editor's Notes

  • #4 Our year-long character development initiatives follow the academic framework cycle as shown on this graph: ESTABLISH goals at the beginning of the year by reflecting on previous year’s feedback, reflecting on survey data and identifying the needs at each school. Attending the Goal-Setting webinar is important in order to learn how to set goals that are SMART. EQUIP schools with the necessary tools, such as guidelines, webinars and Inside Imagine Schools Character Essay Contest. EVALUATE outcomes by reflecting on data via Mid-Year and/or Year-End Evaluations.
  • #10 We need to foster performance character in our students in order to reach our academic goals. NOTE: Do we show scatterplot on next slide?
  • #11 This analysis indicates there is a significant relationship between a high culture of character and academic success. : This scatterplot shows the relationship between character and academic success. On our campuses where survey responses (on our student character surveys) are very positive, students are achieving at higher levels in their core academic subjects. Where leaders and staff invest in the character development of students and culture on campus, students are more successful academically
  • #13 CEP has outlined ten best practices to foster performance character in schools. Go over all 10. Mention that many of these practices have been incorporated throughout the Academic Excellence Framework.
  • #16 Year 1: Introduced and defined all four Year 2: RESPONSIBILITY & CURIOSITY for Focus 4 & 5 Year 3: PERSEVERANCE & CREATIVITY for Focus 6 & 7 Last year we introduced all four performance character traits during our character webinars.
  • #17 RESPONSIBILITY is unique in that it’s both a PERFORMANCE and MORAL character trait. PERFORMANCE: What are my obligations or duties as a student in order to be successful in school? MORAL: What do I need to do to get along with others and contribute to society?
  • #18 MULTI – LAYER slide. Play slide show to see layers. Before we can expect students to grow academically, it’s important and necessary to create a safe and nurturing environment for them to learn in.
  • #27 Coordination with Character Task Force Leaders: Help coordinate and implement a call to review their goals in the fall. Facilitate a meeting of each campuses Academic Growth and Character Development Task Force. Attend Character Webinars (we can send them a list of which ones will be regarding the focus)
