A theme throughout this course has been that human and social services professionals constantly apply theories and processes to address issues and challenges. As a social change agent, leader, and advocate, you should be able to apply relevant theories and processes to implement and support change on a local and global scale. As always, codes of ethics should provide guidance as you attempt to bring about change. As the final step in the development of your strategic plan, you will develop an action plan for each year of the strategic plan. For example, your plan might start off with strategic goals at the local level with plans to take these goals national or international in following years of the strategic plan.

You should make any changes based on the feedback you received. You will include these elements as a whole this week for your final strategic plan.

Who are the target audiences of nonprofit’s? There are many of them. Nonprofit’s have the customers or constituents that they serve (i.e. disaster victims, people they are trying to educate, homeless animals). These individuals may also be considered “members” of a nonprofit. Nonprofits have the communities they operate in and the members of those groups, for-profit entities, other nonprofit’s and the general population. There are board members recruited and appointed to lead and guide nonprofit operations. There are vendors that supply nonprofit’s with technology, supplies, and marketing materials. There are the volunteers that run many of the nonprofit’s day-to-day activities. And there are the funding sources; individuals, corporations, government agencies and foundations that nonprofit’s seek revenue from. There may also be customers that buy goods from retail shops (think museum store) or online sales.
All of these target audiences require marketing activities, they need to be reached, they need to be informed, and they need to be moved to action. And all of the aforementioned activities are ongoing, similar to a for-profit looking to sustain ongoing customer relationships and obtain repeat business, nonprofits also need to sustain customer relationships and repeat business (did you renew your zoo, museum or humane society membership?)
As you learned in MRKT 310 or another Principles of Marketing course one of the first steps to better understanding and reaching multiple target audiences is to segment them. Technology is increasingly impacting the variables, detail and extent that we can now segment markets. Market segmentation used to be accomplished by simple demographic variables such as age, income, geographic location. Now software programs enable us to segment further, use multiple variables simultaneously and complete these tasks at a rate far more efficient than laborious research or the manual creation of a spreadsheet.
One of the leaders in providing software and associated services to nonprofits is a company called Blackbaud. As time and costs are always relevant to nonprofit marketing (there is normally a scarcity of both for many nonprofit’s) the advent and use of marketing software, although a capital expenditure on the front-end can be a long-term time and cost saver and provide results that enable the nonprofit to function in a more efficient capacity. An example of market segmentation is using what Blackbaud calls Target Analytics where a large collection of names with a known proclivity for giving is funneled down into targets meaningful to your organization. Evaluators have developed tools to provide an answer, but documentation is scarce regarding how they are implemented, how the results are used, and whether they predict coalition success in collaborative community change efforts. This breakfast talk will focus on a coalition assessment tool designed by Innovation Network to assess changes in coalition capacity over time.
Developed for a health promotion initiative of the Kansas Health Foundation, this tool is designed to assess coalition progress in seven key areas across twelve different community coalitions, over the course of a four-year initiative. Since these breaks interfered with her workload, the 11 employees were required to carry a percent of Gloria’s workload until she decided to stop pumping and storing breast milk at work. Employees were extremely frustrated at Gloria and felt as though the university was giving her special treatment.
Gloria felt the frustration immediately when returning to work, despite the fact that the university had indicated that it supported mothers on parental leave and mothers who needed extra time to pump breast milk after maternity leave. She felt disrespected by her co-workers due to her cultural beliefs about the importance of breast feeding. The discomfort she felt affected her work, and she began to fall further behind in her daily responsibilities. Soon, she dreaded going to work, cried often, and felt unappreciated by her supervisor. She also felt her supervisor did not approve of her decision to take 12 weeks off after her infant was born and she didn’t approve of her frequent breaks. Gloria often overheard other employees making jokes about her. Gloria has worked for the company for 6 years and does not want to quit. She decides to visit Human Resources for assistance. For example, your plan might start off with strategic goals at the local level with plans to take these goals national or international in following years of the strategic plan.

You should make any changes based on the feedback you received. You will include these elements as a whole this week for your final strategic plan.
Finally this week, consider what actions you will take each year of the strategic plan.

Who are the target audiences of nonprofit’s? There are many of them. Nonprofit’s have the customers or constituents that they serve (i.e. disaster victims, people they are trying to educate, homeless animals). These individuals may also be considered “members” of a nonprofit. Nonprofits have the communities they operate in and the members of those groups, for-profit entities, other nonprofit’s and the general population. There are board members recruited and appointed to lead and guide nonprofit operations. There are vendors that supply nonprofit’s with technology, supplies, and marketing materials. There are the volunteers that run many of the nonprofit’s day-to-day activities. And there are the funding sources; individuals, corporations, government agencies and foundations that nonprofit’s seek revenue from. There may also be customers that buy goods from retail shops (think museum store) or online sales.
All of these target audiences require marketing activities, they need to be reached, they need to be informed, and they need to be moved to action. And all of the aforementioned activities are ongoing, similar to a for-profit looking to sustain ongoing customer relationships and obtain repeat business, nonprofits also need to sustain customer relationships and repeat business (did you renew your zoo, museum or humane society membership?)
As you learned in MRKT 310 or another Principles of Marketing course one of the first steps to better understanding and reaching multiple target audiences is to segment them. Technology is increasingly impacting the variables, detail and extent that we can now segment markets. Market segmentation used to be accomplished by simple demographic variables such as age, income, geographic location. Now software programs enable us to segment further, use multiple variables simultaneously and complete these tasks at a rate far more efficient than laborious research or the manual creation of a spreadsheet.
One of the leaders in providing software and associated services to nonprofits is a company called Blackbaud. As time and costs are always relevant to nonprofit marketing (there is normally a scarcity of both for many nonprofit’s) the advent and use of marketing software, although a capital expenditure on the front-end can be a long-term time and cost saver and provide results that enable the nonprofit to function in a more efficient capacity. An example of market segmentation is using what Blackbaud calls Target Analytics where a large collection of names with a known proclivity for giving is funneled down into targets meaningful to your organization. For example if you are a nonprofit devoted to the arts, the analytics will provide your organization with names interested in the arts, in your geographic locale. Research has shown that high-capacity coalitions are more successful in effecting community change. But what does “high capacity” mean? Evaluators have developed tools to provide an answer, but documentation is scarce regarding how they are implemented, how the results are used, and whether they predict coalition success in collaborative community change efforts. This breakfast talk will focus on a coalition assessment tool designed by Innovation Network to assess changes in coalition capacity over time.
Developed for a health promotion initiative of the Kansas Health Foundation, this tool is designed to assess coalition progress in seven key areas across twelve different community coalitions, over the course of a four-year initiative. Gloria felt the frustration immediately when returning to work, despite the fact that the university had indicated that it supported mothers on parental leave and mothers who needed extra time to pump breast milk after maternity leave. She felt disrespected by her co-workers due to her cultural beliefs about the importance of breast feeding. The discomfort she felt affected her work, and she began to fall further behind in her daily responsibilities. Soon, she dreaded going to work, cried often, and felt unappreciated by her supervisor. She also felt her supervisor did not approve of her decision to take 12 weeks off after her infant was born and she didn’t approve of her frequent breaks. Gloria often overheard other employees making jokes about her. Gloria has worked for the company for 6 years and does not want to quit. She decides to visit Human Resources for assistance. Human Resources works with Gloria and her supervisor to create a plan of work to assist with the areas of concern.

The key to successful advocacy and creating a successful strategic plan is to conduct a needs assessment to determine the needs or priorities for a given agency, organization, or community. A needs assessment is a systematic way of determining the gap between what an agency, organization, or community has and what is desired to meet the needs of individuals, groups, communities, or societies. The needs assessment will reveal whether there may be unmet services. It can then provide information about those needs and help inform your planning to meet them. The needs assessment also consists of planning who you need to target, how you will effectively gather new data, and/or how you will use existing data to inform your planning decisions. To prepare: Think about the needs of the agency, organization, or community that you identified as being the focus for your strategic plan. Consider how you might collect data from stakeholders regarding met and unmet needs. The Assignment (2–3 pages):
- 2. Outline/describe steps you would take to conduct a needs assessment. State which stakeholders you would contact and why you would contact each. Develop a stakeholder survey related to your professional or societal issue. The survey must be at least 10 questions. Provide a justification for each question on the survey. Provide a rationale for the type/format of questions on the survey. State how you would vary items on the survey based on the role of the stakeholders who would complete it (administration, leadership, staff, recipient of surveys).
