Welcome to a New School

Welcome to the Sun West Career
Development
PeBL Journey
As we continue our PeBL journey in Sun West, we recognize it will be:
…. a process
…. a time to explore
…. a time to get messy
As well, it may look different for our CD Team as we interact with students than it will for
other Sun West Teachers/students, but that is OK. Also, there may be ways our Career
Development Team can support the progress schools are already making.
Wherever this journey leads, it will be worthwhile and exciting as we collaborate to create
our own PeBL adventure while continuing to support students/families with the life/career
development process.
Here we go (again)!
Welcome to the Sun West Career
Development
PeBL Journey
At first, for ourselves, and for our students it may seem a bit like we are
herding cats ….
Cowboy Herding Cats
But, as the YouTube video said about herding cats:
"In a sense, this is what we will be doing. We will be bringing together
information, ideas and technologies and making them go where we want."
Once we get the cats all headed in the direction, we will accomplish EXACTLY
what we want and what students need by helping to prepare them for their
future.
We will be working together as a team and with our students to assist them
in becoming life-long learners who are collaborative, creative and critical
thinkers able to communicate effectively and possess the character, cultural
awareness and skills and knowledge to be a contributing member of their
community.
Welcome to the Sun West Career
Development
PeBL Journey
And, in the end, isn't that what we
want for all kids?
The PeBL journey in Sun West will
help us get there!

PeBL Journey – Compass Activity
“She needs every detail before we start, and it slows us down.”
“He acts before we agree on a plan, so we make a lot of mistakes.”
Sound familiar?
It can be frustrating to work as a team. However, being a member of an effective team is
proven to boost morale and performance and team members are far more likely to stay
motivated and connected as they work through challenges. Virtual teamwork also
allows for ongoing learning and increased opportunities for feedback through
collaboration.
It is important to learn about our natural tendencies in terms of teamwork and those of
others.

What do you notice about the team – their interactions, their facial
expressions, their progress?
Note: Preferences/Styles are natural inclinations or tendencies that can
influence how we behave in teams.
Our preferences/styles should be recognized as a way to understand and
empathize with one another but not as a way to label, categorize or judge as
they are not good or bad.

PeBL Journey – Compass Activity

North:
Acting
“Let’s do it!”
Likes to act, try things, plunge in.
East:
Speculating
Likes to look at the big picture and the possibilities before acting.
South:
Caring
Likes to know that everyone’s feelings have been taken into consideration
and that their voices have been heard before acting.
West:
Paying attention to detail.
Likes to know the who, what, when, where, and why before acting.

PeBL Journey – Compass Activity
Adapted from Mind Shift Learning…….
Which of the 4 directions most closely describes your personal style?
Reflect on the following questions:
1. What are the strengths of your direction/style? (4 adjectives)
2. What are the limitations of your direction/style (4 adjectives)
3. What direction/style do you find most difficult to work with and why?
4. What do people from the other directions/styles need to know about
you so you can work together effectively?
5. What do you value about the other three directions/styles?

This is the educator website.
PeBL Defined
• Personalized electronically Blended Learning (PeBL) is a learner-
centred process that supports the gradual and deliberate transfer of
responsibility between educator and student (I Do, We Do, You Do).
• Educators become activators of learning, creating a 21st century
culture and providing access to the supports and resources that
learners need to succeed.
• Student voice and choice become drivers in determining the path
towards achievement of personal and curricular goals.

skills, preparing learners to realize their full potential in all aspects
of life.

PeBL
Implementation
One Step at a Time …
Getting Started
• To enable the Division-wide roll
out of PeBL, we must first reflect
on and document our current
state (A) and then, as a
collective, embark on three
distinct phases of change (B, C &
D)
A. Baseline Readiness
Assessments
B. Cultural Development
C. Character Development
D. Skills and Knowledge
Development
Putting It All Together
A. Readiness Assessments
The first step in the process is to collect data
using a variety of Baseline Readiness
Assessments:
• Learner Profiles
• Classroom Readiness
• School Readiness
• Division Readiness
With continuous evaluation and reflection on
our strengths, opportunities and challenges, we
can better understand and make decisions for
ourselves, learners, educators, and schools.
B. Culture Building
• This means taking the steps to
create the open and
accommodating organizational
spaces and relationships
required to embrace and
facilitate personalized learning.
B. Bringing About Cultural
Development
(or Redevelopment)
• REORDER is a framework
designed to create an open and
accommodating organizational
culture ready to embrace and
facilitate change.
• We are adopting REORDER to
support the redevelopment of a
cohesive and Sun West culture;
one that will enable the timely
realization of our PeBL goal.
C. Character Development
Deliberate identification and refinement of individual traits, habits and
standards to ensure that students become 21st century leaders who:
• Are capable of self-regulation
• Possess grit, perseverance, tolerance
• Appreciate life-long learning
• Are productive
• Are tolerant and fair
• Have mental and physical well being
• Understand their learner profile
C. Character Development
Character Development will be
supported through:
• Character Day – September 13
• Self-Regulation (Buckley’s Secret
Skills, Self-Regulation Learning
Ladders) or whatever schools are
using.
• Learner Profile Reflection
• Policy 18 (5.1) Language
C. Character Development
Policy 18
• “Learners will develop 21st Century Life Skills, such as:
• Life-long learner
• Leadership, responsibility and accountability
• Self-directed, adaptable and resilient
• Tolerant, ethical and fair
• Personal productivity
• Interpersonal (people) skills
• Mental and physical well being
• Proficiency in managing personal relationships.”
D. Skills and Knowledge
Development
Skills and Knowledge will be developed through:
• I Do, We Do, You Do (gradual release of responsibility)
• Transfer of responsibility (personalized pace, path)
How to do it:
• Blended Learning
• Genius Hour
• Growth Mindset
• Project Based Learning
• Problem Based Learning
• Incorporating student choice in assignments and daily agenda/plan
• Sask Reads document and Sun West companion document
• Saskatchewan curriculum resources
• Wide variety of personal, purchased and online resources
• Peer mentoring and sharing (teachers, students and community)
• Development of 21st Century Competencies
