Romero has appeared in the major cultural centers throughout

sity and flawless control mark him as a true master of the arts.
Guitarist Eliot Fisk is known worldwide as a charismatic
performer famed for his adventurous and virtuosic repertoire.
He is also celebrated for his willingness to take art music into

PABLO SÁINZ VILLEGAS
Fri, January 20 • 7:30pm
NEWMARK THEATRE
Presented in partnership
with Portland Classic Guitar 2016 -2017
William Jenks - Artistic Director
The soul of the Spanish guitar runs in Pablo Villegas’s
blood. Born and raised in La Rioja, Spain—the country
with unique and deep ties to his chosen instrument—Vil-
legas is known for a sound so rich and full that it does not
need amplification, and distinguished by performances
as charismatic as they are intimate. With his singing tone
and consummate technique, his interpretations conjure
the passion, playfulness, and drama of his homeland’s
rich musical heritage, routinely drawing comparisons
with such legendary exponents of his instrument as
Andrés Segovia.
At just 15 he won the Andrés Segovia Award, launching a
succession of international wins that include Gold Medal
at the inaugural Christopher Parkening International Guitar
Competition. The first guitarist to win El Ojo Crítico,
Spain’s top classical music honor, Villegas also became
the youngest of his generation to appear with the New
York Philharmonic, in an auspicious debut under the
late Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos at Avery Fisher Hall. He
has since performed for both the Dalai Lama and the
Spanish royal family, and it was he who gave the world
premiere of Rounds, the first composition for guitar by
five-time Academy Award-winner JohnWilliams. A born
communicator, the guitarist explains: “Music is a social
tool, and opening people’s hearts, and helping them
connect to the inner life of the emotions, is my mission.”
$30–$50
Knighted by his native Spain for his extraordinary
international musical career, Angel Romero “plays with
such grace and elegance it’s almost as though he’s
dancing tango with his guitar.”
–Guitar World
American Eliot Fisk, “a master classical guitarist in his
prime” Seen and Heard International, “plays guitar with
energy, intensity and precision” and “a fine balance of
focused introspection and incendiary virtuosity.”

LOS ROMEROS WITH ANGEL ROMERO
Fri, March 10 • 7:30pm
ARLENE SCHNITZER CONCERT HALL
Presented in partnership
with Portland Classic Guitar 2016 -2017
William Jenks - Artistic Director
Over half a century after walking onto the world stage as the first classical guitar quartet,The Romeros continue
to be a veritable institution in the world of classical music, dazzling countless audiences and winning the raves
of reviewers worldwide.
Known to millions as “The Royal Family of the Guitar,” the Romeros were founded by the legendary Celedonio
Romero with his sons Celin, Pepe and Angel in 1958. Today, the quartet consists of the second (Celin & Pepe)
and third generations (Lito & Celino). To have so many virtuosi of the same instrument in one family is unique
in the world of musical performance, and in the realm of the classical guitar it is absolutely without precedent.
“Collectively, they are the only classical guitar quartet of real stature in the world today; in fact, they virtually
invented the format,” praised The NewYorkTimes in an extensive feature article. “One of the enduring mysteries
of musical talent is how skills seem to flow genetically from musical parent to musical child. In the Romero
family the flow has been swift and unimpeded. The virtuosity of the four Romeros was uniformly solid and finely
considered, as if these techniques had derived from a single mold.”
Celebrating their fifty-fifth anniversary, the season will include tours in Asia, Europe, South America and the
United States. The Romeros will also be presenting special concerts and festivals in memory of the 100th
an-
niversary of patriarch Celedonio Romero. As the family says, “the spirit of the quartet is him; all our concerts
now pay homage to him.”

EIGHTH BLACKBIRD WITH BONNIE “PRINCE” BILLY
Wed, May 3 • 7:30pm
ARLENE SCHNITZER CONCERT HALL
The centerpiece of the program by four-time GRAMMY®
Award winning sextet Eighth Black-
bird is Murder Ballades, a work by composer Bryce Dessner. Best known as the guitarist
for the indie rock band The National, he writes that “when Eighth Blackbird asked me for a
piece, I immediately knew what to do: let great American folk music inspire a great Ameri-
can new music ensemble. The ‘murder ballad’ has its roots in a European tradition, in which
grisly details of bloody homicides are recounted through song. When this tradition came to
America, it developed its own vernacular, with stories and songs being told and retold over
the generations. In Murder Ballades I reexamine several of these old songs, allowing them
to inspire my own music.”
The music of singer-songwriter Will Oldham, aka Bonnie “Prince” Billy, has been linked to
Americana, folk, roots, country, punk, and indie rock, and Will himself has been described
as an “Appalachian post-punk solipsist” with a voice that is “a fragile sort of warble frittering
around haunted melodies in the American folk or country tradition.” He joins the ‘birds once
again to perform a set of original songs, along with Frederic Rzewski’s iconic ComingTogether
a touchstone piece of classical music’s young, underground, independently minded set. The
text for this piece is taken directly from a letter written by Attica Prison inmate Sam Melville
in 1971, only months before the riots which he helped organized and that led to his death,
and trace a descent from self control into madness.

THE HOT SARDINES
Tues, January 17 • 7:30pm
NEWMARK THEATRE
Quality is timeless. Just askThe Hot Sardines.
In the talented hands of the New York-based ensemble, music
first made famous decades ago comes alive through their brassy
horn arrangements, rollicking piano melodies, and vocals from
a chanteuse who transports listeners to a different era with the
mere lilt of her voice.
Bandleader Evan “Bibs” Palazzo and lead singer “Miz Elizabeth”
Bougerol met in 2007 after they both answered a Craigslist ad
about a jazz jam session above a Manhattan noodle shop. “We
found ourselves in the perfect place at the perfect time,” says
Evan. “As we explored this 100 year-old jazz, we began to look at
it as a journey forward, not so much as a look back. This is music
for today, not a museum piece.”
Indeed, “People Will Say We’re In Love” from the Rodgers &
Hammerstein musical Oklahoma! gets reinvented as a tart tango.
Jazz standard “Comes Love” starts as a minuet before vocalist
Elizabeth, singing in her native French, conjures up spirits from
the roaring ‘20s. The Hot Sardines even upend Robert Palmer’s
1985 classic “Addicted To Love” with Elizabeth’s cool vocals and
hot horn arrangements.
In the hot jazz movement, The Hot Sardines stand apart for the
innovation, verve and sheer joy they bring to music, both new
and old. “It’s a really cool time to be making music,” Elizabeth
says. “Especially if you’re making music that started its life 100
years ago.”

BRANFORD MARSALIS QUARTET
WITH SPECIAL GUEST KURT ELLING
Thurs, February 16 • 7:30pm
NEWMARK THEATRE
Presented in partnership with Portland Jazz Festival
The Branford Marsalis Quartet will be joined by guest-vocalist Kurt Elling in a
singular collaboration of musical forces. The tight-knit working band featuring
Marsalis on saxophones, Joey Calderazzo on piano, Eric Revis on bass, and
Justin Faulkner on drums rarely invites other musicians into the folds of their
nearly telepathically cohesive unit, and Elling’s deep jazz vocabulary, technical
versatility, and outstanding intonation will enable the band to perform a variety
of material in new ways.
Energized by the artistic promise of this collaboration, the band members
have all contributed new arrangements to perform with this special line-up
and will be looking beyond the Great American Songbook. Although following
the format of a standard jazz quartet with vocals, the collaboration between
jazz’s most intense band and one of jazz’s foremost singer should prove to
be anything but standard.
$49.50–$69.50
“Elling is the standout male vocalist
of our time.” The Washington Post
added, “Since the mid-1990s, no
singer in jazz has been as daring,
dynamic or interesting as Kurt Elling.
With his soaring vocal flights, his
edgy lyrics and sense of being on
a musical mission, he has come to
embody the creative spirit in jazz.”

21. AT THE FRONT LINES OF PORTLAND’5
You’ve already purchased a pair of great seats to a performance at the Arlene
Schnitzer Concert Hall. Your tickets are in your inbox or in your hand, and you’re
just waiting for the date of the show. But you still have some questions.
Questions like:
»» What time do the doors open?
»» What should I wear?
»» Will there be any special restrictions on what I can bring inside?
»» Who can I call to get answers to these questions?
Enter the volunteer office assistants at Portland’5! Our office volunteers are the
front line of Portland’5, manning the post at our reception desk and answering
over 1,000 phone calls each month ranging from “How do I buy tickets?” to “Is
there an intermission?”
In order to be an office assistant, volunteers must spend time as either an usher,
gift shop staffer, or tour guide for at least six months before training for the office.
Potential office assistants receive a training manual and then observe a shift to
make sure the role is right for them. Once they are ready to move forward, our
new assistants return two more times to answer phone calls under the guidance
of an existing office volunteer. We’ve found that the best way for a new office
volunteer to learn the ropes is to dive right in!
But diving in doesn’t mean we expect our office assistants to know everything
right away.We look for a good attitude and a willingness to learn, and the rest will
follow. Over time, our office volunteers pick up a wide variety of knowledge about
our theaters and programming. And our full-time staff members are always available
to help our volunteers when they may not know an answer to something new!
MEET OUR
VOLUNTEERS!
Our office assistants are a strong
group! Overall, we have twenty
one volunteers in the office as-
sistant role, fifteen of whom have
permanent rotating positions.
“My office assistant volunteer job
is the best of worlds because I get
to help more people! I’m also an
usher, a greeter, and a gift shop vol-
unteer—all volunteer jobs I enjoy.
But I help the most people when I
am an office assistant.”
–Elaine Lycan,

“Working at the Front Desk is in-
credibly rewarding. Our patrons
are so happy to talk to a real live
human who will help them navigate
our website, listen to their fervent
desires to see a certain show and
help them find any treasures they
may have mislaid during the excite-
ment of one of our presentations.
Having participated in theater

Lila grew up both in Minnesota and Oaxaca, and her music

American folk, jazz, blues and hip-hop. Many of her lyrics

BLACK VIOLIN
CELEBRATETHEIR RETURNTO PORTLAND!
Mon, April 3 • 7:30pm
ARLENE SCHNITZER CONCERT HALL
Presented in partnership with Chamber Music Northwest
The opening and title track to Stereotypes, the major-label debut by Black Violin, serves as a
mission statement for an ambitious and groundbreaking group. Wil Baptiste (viola) and Kev
Marcus (violin) are a string duo from Florida with equal footing in the worlds of classical music
and hip-hop.Though they have been playing together since high school, with Stereotypes, they
take a great leap forward, from admirable rarities to significant innovators.
“Our mantra has always been to engage the audience to look at things from a different perspective,”
says Kev. “At first, we leaned on the fact that we were different, more than on our technique—we
wanted you to be confused. This time, we tried to keep our core message, but with more gravitas,
more seriousness. Not just be crazy and different, but really step it up and be badass violinists.”
“Wil and Kev’s DNA is all about shattering and breaking stereotypes,” says producer Eli Wolf,
who has worked with the likes of Norah Jones,Wynton Marsalis, and Elvis Costello. “We wanted
the album to thread their sound through a kaleidoscope of styles, and bring out ways to break
down categories and barriers into something multi-faceted and expansive.”
With Stereotypes, BlackViolin set out to achieve something more than just selling some records
or gaining notoriety as a curiosity. “We want to really be something that young musicians aspire
to,” says Kev. “For us, the violin is the vehicle for a bigger message, which is not to be afraid to
be different.”

AMERICA’S FIRST FOODIE:
THE INCREDIBLE LIFE OF
JAMES BEARD
Wed, February 22 • 7:00pm

Presented in partnership
with Hollywood Theatre
Pacific Northwest film premiere! Food in the 21st
century is much
more than “meat and potatoes” and soup casseroles. Chefs achieve
celebrity status regularly; recipes and exotic ingredients, once
impossible to find, now are just a mouse click away; and major U.S.
cities are better known for their gastronomy than their art galleries.
Today’s American food movement can be traced back to one man:
cookbook author, journalist, television celebrity and teacher James
Beard. A champion of localism and sustainability long before those
terms had entered the culinary vernacular; Beard appreciated what
America had to bring to the table at a time of “all things French.” He
introduced Julia Child to NewYork, boosting her place as a culinary
grande dame. Child in turn once said, “I may have brought French
cooking to America, but Jim brought American cooking to America.”
His name graces the highest culinary honor in the American food
world today: the James Beard Foundation Awards. While chefs all
around the country aspire to win this “Culinary Oscar,” many of
those same chefs know very little about the man behind the medal.
Featuring interviews with culinary-world luminaries including Alice
Waters,Wolfgang Puck,Ted Allen, Martha Stewart, Jacques Pépin,
Ruth Reichl, Cathy Whims and Greg Higgins, this documentary
chronicles a century of food through Beard’s life. Celebrity inter-
views, archival footage and whimsical animations combine in a rich
recipe that reveals his impact, spirit and genius.
Written and Directed by Elizabeth Federici. Produced by Elizabeth Federici
and Kathleen Squires. A co-production of Federici Films and American

It is no exaggeration to say that paleoanthropologist
Lee Berger’s 2013 discovery of Homo naledi signaled a
profound shift in our understanding of human evolution.
In a secret chamber of the remote Rising Star cave
system near Johannesburg, South Africa, a massive
collection of bones was discovered by his explorers
assisted by recreational cavers. So he rapidly assem-
bled a team of “underground astronauts” with caving
experience, scientific backgrounds, and the kind of
physique that could fit in a chute averaging 7.9 inches
in width. What they found suggested something un-
precedented—ritual burial, a practice long thought to
be unique to Homo sapiens. And that was just the
beginning.

In an effort to better serve our
community and celebrate diversity,
our Educational Outreach Program was designed
to provide elementary school children a free
opportunity to hear nationally celebrated musical
artists, learn about the performing arts, and ex-
perience our venues. Each event offers a diverse
range of ethnic and cultural perspectives and
celebrates the rich heritage of music in all its
forms and cultures while teaching children about
music, musicians, and instruments.
The first year of our Educational Outreach
Program served over 6,000 students within the
Portland Public School district. This year, we’re
offering more student performances and expand-
ing the reach of our program to include schools in
other school districts within Multnomah, Wash-
ington and Clackamas Counties.
Featured performers for 2016/2017 include Hyp-
notic Brass Ensemble, Black Violin and lectures
from National Geographic Live speakers.
For more information about our Educational Out-
reach Program, please contact Tom Sessa at
503.274.6557 or email tomsessa@portland5.com.
These free events are only available to participating school groups.

In February 2015, we updated our readerboard with a brand-new digital
sign. Our new sign is lightweight, has a higher resolution, and uses
better technology, including a cloud-based interface that allows our team
to quickly and efficiently change out the display.
The new sign is more energy efficient, too. Instead of using incan-
descent bulbs like the old sign, it features 45,000 LED light bulbs per
side that not only contribute to the dynamic display, but also help save
energy. With the upgraded light bulbs and technology, the new sign
uses 66–78% less power than the old sign, which equates to an annual
savings of more than 100,000 kilowatts per hour!
It took a total of three days to dismantle the old sign and install the
new, but it was well worth the effort! The new sign allows us to create
extraordinary content showcasing the variety of performances that take
place in our venues, all while supporting our sustainability and energy
efficiency goals.

PORTLAND’5 CENTERS FOR THE ARTS
CHEF EARNS TOP CERTIFICATION!
Portland’5 Centers for the Arts is pleased to announce that pacificwild
Chef de cuisine for the Portland’5 venues (ArtBar & Bistro, Keller
Café, and event catering), Shannon Wisner, has earned a Pro Chef II
certification from the world renowned Culinary Institute of America -
increasing her culinary, leadership and financial skills.
The ProChef certification is the only competency-based certification
for professional chefs. In order to achieve ProChef Level II certifi-
cation status a chef must demonstrate a number of skills to prove
their culinary aptitude, leadership skills, and financial acumen. The
rigorous four-day test assesses a chef’s proficiency in competency
in basic food science, baking, and nutrition; personnel management
and supervisory skills; and knowledge of basic concepts of financial
controls of a food operation. Grading is done by Master Chefs within
the Culinary Institute of America.
Achieving certification is a milestone for chefs and is considered a
stamp of recognition in the culinary industry. ShannonWisner has been
with pacificwild/Portland’5 for 6 years. She has a degree in Culinary
Arts from the Western Culinary Institute and holds a certification in
ProChef I amongst her credentials and experience.
