2. ABOUT ARTS AND
CULTURE EVENTS
AT MERCYHURST
Each year Mercyhurst College welcomes artists and
speakers from across the country and around the world
who present the best in cutting-edge dance and award
winning classical, contemporary, jazz and world music
as well as engaging topics from a variety of disciplines.
Today Mercyhurst offers more than 100 events each
year and welcomes nearly 30,000 visitors who enjoy
the wide variety of arts and culture events on campus.
The Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center, a $3.7
million, 800-seat complex, is the largest and most
stunning of the performance spaces on campus. The
venue hosts not only the college’s major performances
but also the Guelcher Film Series and the Metropolitan
Opera: HD Live.

theatre was named for former college president Sister

3. ROLAND DYENS
FRIDAY, SEPT. 30 AT 8 P.M. AT WALKER RECITAL HALL
Guitarist Roland Dyens is a true man of the world. Born inTunisia and now residing in Paris,
Dyens studied with the Spanish master Alberto Ponce. As the guitar becomes a nearly universal
instrument, Dyens, a composer, an improviser and a spellbinding performer, gathers its entire
history — several continents and many centuries of music — under his fingers.

4. ÓRLA FALLON
TUESDAY, OCT. 4
AT 7:30 P.M.
The phenomenal success of CELTICWOMAN
opened doors for Órla Fallon, the group’s
singer and harpist from the village of
Knockananna in CountyWicklow, Ireland.
These doors were at theWhite House and the
Vatican where Fallon, now a solo performer,
beguiled her very distinguished audiences.
Fallon is an enchanting performer, as Public
Television viewers of her 2010 special“Órla
Fallon’s Celtic Christmas,”quickly learned.
Now it’s our turn to experience the special
magic of Órla Fallon first-hand.

5. PAUL TAYLOR DANCE COMPANY
FRIDAY, OCT. 7 AT 8 P.M.
Nothing succeeds like success, though success seems insufficient to describe the electrifying
performance by the PaulTaylor Dance Company during the 2007-2008 season. To attend a
performance by this company is to reconsider the limits of the human body and imagination.
The company has been pushing these limits for 56 years by refiningTaylor’s vision into an
exceptional evening for audiences worldwide.

Adult: $20
Senior/Student/PC: $15

6. DAVID LANZ
RE-IMAGINING THE BEATLES
FRIDAY, OCT. 14 AT 7:30 P.M.
Grammy®-nominated pianist David Lanz is not the sort of artist to sit still. A mainstay during
the early days of the New Age-oriented Narada label, Lanz’s curiosity propelled him to explore
music far from his meditative, solo-piano roots. Now he takes on one of the most imposing
monuments in 20th-century music: the Beatles songbook. With flutist Gary Stroutsos and
cellistWalter Gray, Lanz explores the forgotten corners of the Lennon-McCartney canon.
Adult: $22.50
Senior/Student/PC: $20
Youth/MC Student: $15
7. DAVID SEDARIS
SATURDAY, OCT. 22 AT 8 P.M.
He’s one of the most original voices in American humor — in both senses of that word. David
Sedaris mixes a sneaky-good cocktail of wry, deadpan narratives about life in the early 21st Century.
From his early retellings on NPR’s“Morning Edition”of life as an elf at Macy’s to his unforgettable
bits on“This American Life”to the NewYorkTimes best-seller list, Sedaris, the first spoken-word
performer in the16-year history of the D’Angelo Center, is an American original.

9. It’sbecomeamuch-lovedErietradition:thebiennialvisitoftheJapanesetaikodrumorchestra
Wadaiko Yamato. The 14 drummers of the Japanese ensemble may be choreographed with
the stylized precision of Kabuki theater, but the sound they produce is felt as much as heard
— especially that of the sound the o-daiko, a drum the size of a small car whacked by what
looks like a baseball bat. This is music that has the awe-inspiring impact of nature itself.

10. Has any artist captivated a room quite like vocalist René Marie did during her 2001
appearance in Erie? The effect was scarcely different outdoors at the 2003 Erie Art
Museum Blues & Jazz Festival. A few vocalists combine gospel ardor, R&B sass and jazz
artistry, but no female vocalist on the scene today does this with the daring and utter
commitment of René Marie.

11. Some voices beckon you with beauty of tone and others command you to listen with the authority
of their sound. The room-filling bass-baritone of Grammy® Award-winning artist Mark S. Doss
does both. A regular at La Scala and other international opera houses who will be accompanied in
recital by Mercyhurst professor Dr. Albert Glinsky, Doss will provide thrilling evidence of why he is
one of the most sought-after singing actors on stage today.

SATURDAY, FEB. 4 AT 7:30 P.M. AT WALKER RECITAL HALL
12. JIN XING DANCE THEATRE
TUESDAY, FEB. 14 AT 7:30 P.M.
Shanghai-based dancer and choreographer Jin Xing has a personal story that almost defies
credulity. One could say the same thing about the singular and captivating body of work she
has built with the Shanghai Jin Xing DanceTheatre, which have been described as“startlingly
original and provocative.” The Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center is honored to bring this
international dance iconoclast to an American audience.

13. THE ROBERT CRAY BAND
FRIDAY, FEB. 24 AT 8 P.M.
Robert Cray last visited Erie in 1984 as a young upstart redefining the language of the
blues. He returns to the D’Angelo Center as one of its acknowledged masters. His stinging
guitar style, compelling voice and wry, insightful songwriting – just a little left of the
center of the blues – mark him as one of the form’s true innovators. As a performer, he will
burn the house down. Erie is a blues town, and Robert Cray is a bluesman’s bluesman.

14. THE COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA
WITH NEW YORK VOICES
SATURDAY, FEB. 25 AT 8 P.M.
The legendary Count Basie Orchestra is nothing less than America in sound. Now brash, now
sophisticated, no one captured the swagger, optimism, precision and sheer exhilaration of the American
Century better than the swinging orchestra of the Count from Red Bank. If there were a Count Basie
Orchestra of vocals, it would surely be NewYorkVoices, a Grammy® Award-winning vocal ensemble of
dazzling precision and invention.Taken together, they present an evening of jazz at a rarefied level.
