and piano, then the powerful Shostakovich sonata, full of
desire, cynicism and mockery. Li-Wei Qin’s breathtaking
virtuosity comes to the fore in Paganini’s Moses variations.

12. government house
Romantically sited on Bennelong Point, Government House
was built between 1837 and 1845 in the Gothic Revival
style. Its construction was seen to reflect the maturity of
the colony and it was regarded as a showcase for colonial
craftsmanship, materials and technical innovation.
Today the house’s interiors display an exceptional
collection demonstrating 168 years of changing style and
taste. In 2007 the house underwent the most significant
refurbishment in 25 years when the Historic Houses Trust
commissioned leading Australian designers and artists
to design contemporary furniture and furnishings to
complement the historic interiors of the state drawing rooms.
Government House is managed by the Historic Houses
Trust, which is entrusted with the care of key historic
buildings and sites in New South Wales. The house
hosts many vice-regal, state government and community
events and welcomes thousands of visitors each year.
