This document summarizes a project organized by "Dlithe" at Kalpataru Institute of Technology, Tiptur to identify flood prone roads using GIS technology. The objectives are to coordinate warning and emergency response, evaluate flood risks, and raise awareness of flood hazards. Heavy rainfall, inadequate drainage, snow melting, and cyclones are reasons for floods in India. The team will use GIS mapping to view geographical maps of flood affected regions and identify flood prone roads to help manage transportation and livelihoods during floods. An overview of the project website is also provided.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
- Identification Flood Prone Roads
“Identification of Flood Prone Roads” is an
important input for devising the strategy for
efficient management of livelihood and
transportation due to floods. Economic
losses, damages, and destruction to life,
property & environment due to flood are
making more severe impact on society.

6. Heavyrainfall
India, being a peninsular country and surrounded by
the Arabian Sea,Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal, is
quite prone to flood. As per the “Geographical Survey of
India(GSI)”,the major flood prone areas of India cover
almost 12.5% area of the country.
India is incredible indeed! Among the highest rainfall states
in India, feature Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, West Bengal,
Odisha, Uttarakhand, Karntaka and Kerala.

7. Inadequate drainage
Inadequate drainage of surplus waters ruins soils,
keeps ground-water tables injuriously high and
causes standing, stagnant water, or local
flooding. Uncontrolled discharge of drainage
waters can result in the inundation of the
territory of downstream countries. Large tracts of
land are agriculturally unproductive because of
excess water in or on the soil, due to inadequate
land drainage. Water in excess of that needed by
plants may inhibit growth of the economically
important parts of the plant. High water content
also lubricates the soil particles and frequently
leads to unstable conditions unsuitable to
machine and other crop operations. In the
extreme, when land is drowned, waterlogged or
marshy, it may be of no value to crop production.
Excess water creates problems in agricultural
production over vast areas.

8. Snowmelting
A flood is considered a snowmelt flood when melting
snow is a major source of the water involved. Unlike
rainfall, which reaches the soil almost immediately, snow
stores the water for some time until it melts, delaying the
arrival of water at the soil for days, weeks, or even
months. Once it does reach the soil, the water either.
Snowmelt flooding typically occurs every year in the
northern United States, with most snowmelt events
being minor and localized. Eight of the most significant
floods of the 21thcentury in terms of area affected,
property damage, and deaths were related to snowmelt
soaks into the ground or runs off. If more water runs off
than soaks in, flooding occurs.

9. Cyclones
Cyclones are violent Storms with an intense spiral and accompanied
by strong winds and heavy rains. They are caused due to strong
winds blowing around the central area having low atmospheric
pressure.
Cyclones are caused by atmospheric disturbances around a low-
pressure area distinguished by swift and often destructive air
circulation. Cyclones are usually accompanied by violent storms
and bad weather. The air circulates inward in an anticlockwise
direction in the Northern hemisphere and clockwise in the
Southern hemisphere. Cyclones are classified as:
(i) extra tropical cyclones also called temperate cyclones
(ii) tropical cyclones.
(iii)The word Cyclone is derived from the Greek word Cyclos
meaning the coils of a snake. It was coined by Henry
Peddington because the tropical storms in the Bay of Bengal
and the Arabian Sea appear like coiled serpents of the sea.

10. • GIS - A “Geographic Information Systems” is a
computer system for capturing, storing,
checking and displaying data related to
positions on earth surface.
• GIS can use any information that includes
location. The location can be expressed in
many different ways, such as latitude and
longitude, address or zip code.
• Many different types of information can be
compared and contrasted using GIS.
• It can include information about the landscape,
such as the location of streams different kinds
of vegetarian and different kinds of soil. It can
include information about the sites of factories,
farms and schools or storm drains, roads.
