The rapid expansion of the Internet of Things has fostered convenience and connectedness for consumers. It has also opened the door for creative hackers. Recently, hackers used hundreds of thousands of common internet-connected devices in consumers’ homes, without the owners’ knowledge, to launch a DDoS attack that temporarily brought down crucial parts of the internet’s infrastructure.
Attacks in the past have shown that passwords in IoT devices provide insufficient security. Additionally, IoT devices are too constrained for implementing biometric functions.
The question then becomes how to authenticate to such devices and can the industry adopt a standardized approach despite a highly fragmented IoT landscape. The rate at which new technology goes to market is inversely proportional to the amount of security that gets designed into the product. According to IHS Markit, “The number of connected IoT devices worldwide will jump 12 percent on average annually, from nearly 27 billion in 2017 to 125 billion in 2030.”
IoT devices are quite a bit different from other internet-connected devices such as laptops and servers. They are designed with a single purpose in mind, usually running minimal software with minimal resources to serve that purpose. Adding the capability to run and update security software is often not taken into consideration.
Due to the lack of security integrated into IoT devices, they present significant risks that must be addressed. IoT security is the practice of understanding and mitigating these risks. Let’s consider the challenges of IoT security and how we can address them.
Some security practitioners suggest that key IoT security steps include:
1. Make people aware that there is a threat to security;
2. Design a technical solution to reduce security vulnerabilities;
3. Align the legal and regulatory frameworks; and
4. Develop a workforce with the skills to handle IoT security.
Final Assignment - Project Plan (Deliverables):
1) Address each of the FOURIoT security steps listed above in terms of IoT devices.
2) Explain in detail, in a step-by-step guide, how to make people more aware of the problems associated with the use of IoT devices.

Print security features automatically detect and stop attacks
HP business printers, from Pro through Enterprise, can automatically detect and stop an attack (and notify your system of potential trouble) during all phases of operation:
During start up. The boot code (for Pro devices) or BIOS (for Enterprise and Managed devices) is a set of instructions used to load critical hardware components and initiate firmware. The integrity of the code is validated at every boot cycle—helping to safeguard your device from attack.

In addition to being able to detect and stop threats, HP Enterprise and Managed printers automatically self-heal from attacks, so IT doesn’t need to intervene. These features automatically trigger a reboot in the event of an attack or anomaly:
HP Sure Start. If the BIOS is compromised, HP Sure Start forces a reboot and reloads with a safe “golden copy” of its BIOS.
Run-time intrusion detection monitors complex firmware and memory operations, automatically stops the intrusion, and reboots in the event of an attack.
HP Connection Inspector uses unique HP technology to evaluate outgoing network connections, determine what’s normal, stop suspicious requests, and thwart malware by automatically triggering a reboot.

Part of good device security is making sure that your device is configured properly. The default settings on HP business printers are designed to make them more secure from the start. And HP JetAdvantage Security Manager plays a key role in keeping them secure. After a reboot occurs—or any time a new device is added to the network—HP Security Manager automatically assesses and, if necessary, remediates device security settings to comply with pre‑established configuration policies.
