What is PBL?
“Project-based learning is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore
real-world problems and challenges. With this type of active and engaged learning,
students are inspired to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're
studying”- Edutopia
Driving Question:
How can we create a business that will raise
money to help the community?
Summary:
Second graders work in groups to develop a craft kit to sell to students at the
International Community School of Abidjan. They will develop a business plan,
present ideas to investors, film commercials, write how-to directions, assemble their
craft kits, and sell them for profit at the ICSA PBL Market.
Math, social studies writing and reading
standards are targeted throughout the
project:
An important aspect of PBL is the study of cross-disciplinary themes. Cross-
disciplinary instruction involves the use and combination of more than one
academic discipline to study a theme, question or topic.
Math:
Students will implement math skills learned to figure out how much they will spend
making the craft kits and how much profit they aspire to make from each kit sold.
They will reach an agreement within their group using second grade mathematical
calculations.
Social Studies and technology:
Students will understand the importance and relevance of supporting their
community. They will research the appropriate needs of the Abidjan community and
evaluate how they can serve where there is need. Through this investigation
students will learn more about the community they live in and create connections
with the local society.
Students will use technology to create commercials to convince their audience to
invest in their projects.
Reading and Writing
Students will develop their academic reading skills by conducting research before
they begin their projects.
They will be able to read and evaluate printed and online resources to find relevant
and topic specific information for their project.
Students will use their writing skills to create a convincing letter for donors to invest
in their projects using facts and research.
Students will use their writing and editing skills to write “How-to Books” for their
craft-kits.

  • 4. Summary: Second graders work in groups to develop a craft kit to sell to students at the International Community School of Abidjan. They will develop a business plan, present ideas to investors, film commercials, write how-to directions, assemble their craft kits, and sell them for profit at the ICSA PBL Market.
  • 5. Math, social studies writing and reading standards are targeted throughout the project: An important aspect of PBL is the study of cross-disciplinary themes. Cross- disciplinary instruction involves the use and combination of more than one academic discipline to study a theme, question or topic.
  • 6. Math: Students will implement math skills learned to figure out how much they will spend making the craft kits and how much profit they aspire to make from each kit sold. They will reach an agreement within their group using second grade mathematical calculations.
  • 7. Social Studies and technology: Students will understand the importance and relevance of supporting their community. They will research the appropriate needs of the Abidjan community and evaluate how they can serve where there is need. Through this investigation students will learn more about the community they live in and create connections with the local society. Students will use technology to create commercials to convince their audience to invest in their projects.
  • 8. Reading and Writing Students will develop their academic reading skills by conducting research before they begin their projects. They will be able to read and evaluate printed and online resources to find relevant and topic specific information for their project. Students will use their writing skills to create a convincing letter for donors to invest in their projects using facts and research. Students will use their writing and editing skills to write “How-to Books” for their craft-kits.
