How to close material loops and drive value from innovative partnerships Sustainable Brands
Len Sauers of Procter & Gamble outlines the company's goals and initiatives around sustainability. P&G aims to power plants with 100% renewable energy, use 100% renewable or recycled materials for products and packaging, and send zero waste to landfills. Specific 2020 goals include reducing environmental footprint by 20% and ensuring 90% of packaging is recyclable. P&G is working to close material loops through partnerships like the Closed Loop Fund (providing loans to improve recycling infrastructure) and Waste to Worth (creating businesses in developing countries to process waste and create profits). The company also partners to find higher value uses for manufacturing waste rather than sending it to landfill.

Rebecca Masisak and Marnie Webb, Co-CEOs, TechSoup Global
Your organization is currently doing critical work in the United States, but you recognize the need to grow its reach and impact internationally. What models should be considered? How do key staff and boards step up to support experimentation and adroitly shape and govern the emerging structures and brand?
Important lessons can be learned from pioneering TechSoup Global. As worldwide demand for its programs grew, TechSoup Global's leadership team and board struggled with developing an organizational model that would mobilize partners around a common mission and include contributions from multiple players. Like most organizations, key considerations included expansion without significant additions in headcount and overhead. Now operating in 33 countries with three distinct boards of directors, TechSoup Global has successfully built a growing global network of locally driven programs.
A showcase of applicable insights, this session explores lessons learned, innovative technologies deployed, organizational models piloted and refined, and how boards influence and model the kind of leadership needed as organizations expand internationally.

WasteZero Chairman John Campbell delivers a presentation on how the pay-as-you-throw model can reduce trash, increase recycling, help the environment, and save cities money.
Changing the Payment Model: Pay-as-You-Throw and Financial EfficiencyWasteZero
Changing the Payment Model: Pay-as-You-Throw and Financial Efficiency discusses moving away from flat fee payment models for waste disposal to a pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) model where residents pay based on how much waste they generate. Under the current flat fee model, waste disposal costs are not priced effectively and create inefficiencies. PAYT programs have been shown to significantly reduce household waste and increase recycling by as much as 50% while also lowering collection and disposal costs for municipalities. Bag-based PAYT programs, where residents pay per bag of trash, are identified as the most effective PAYT approach.
The Financial Powerof Zero-Waste Programs: A Pay-as-You-Throw Case StudyFr...WasteZero
A presentation on the significant financial impact of pay-as-you-throw on Worcester, Mass., presented by WasteZero and Worcester's former Public Works director at the Solid Waste Association of North America's annual conference in March 2015.
Solid waste management is a major financial and environmental problem in the United States. Vast amounts of paper, plastic, aluminum and other materials are thrown away each year, representing billions of dollars in avoidable costs and lost revenue opportunities. Communities should treat solid waste disposal like other utilities by metering the amount of trash generated. Cities that have implemented trash metering programs have significantly reduced the amount of solid waste produced, with declines ranging from 41-59% over time periods of 3 months to 8 years.
Pay-As-You-Throw and Solid Waste Finance WasteZero
The document discusses pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) solid waste management programs. It provides an overview of WasteZero, a company that designs municipal waste reduction programs, and discusses how PAYT works to reduce waste and incentivize recycling. The document uses the city of Decatur, GA as a case study, noting that Decatur implemented a new PAYT system in 1998 which included education efforts and use of municipally branded trash bags.
