MASS TIMBER INFILTRATION
KTH-Master thesis
Thesis
Mass timber construction - the new hype in architecture, and conversion -
the evident necessity in a rapid growing city. The two concepts are merged to
re-purpose and expand on a 5 decade old industrial building.
The mass timber structure infiltrates through the old building from above
transforming its interior spaces for new function while supporting the new
housing above.
How can one of the most important aspects of using mass timber - a short
assembly period, be utilized in a conversion?
How can the inherent large volume of timber elements become useful in the
existing interiors and enhance the quality of space?
Infiltrate (verb) - to enter, permeate, or pass through a substance or area by
filtering or by insinuating gradually.

Slakthusområdet- The meat packing district located
in the south of the Stockholm municipality has a
history of more than a century. It was inaugurated
in 1912. Its approximately 300 000m2
with over 200
companies.
The area is planned to be re-purposed by Stockholm
municipality into a diverse cultural, residential and
commercial area in the next 15 years.
Kylhuset 4 - The building used to explore the thesis questions is a discrete and small pork factory with
a 2 floor office block and a 1 storey production wing. It was built in 1957-58.
The building has a historical value as part of the abattoirs history of food processing and represents
the district’s architectural development of the decade.

Use of existing strcture’s capacity
New Area = 2700+500sqm
Reinforcing existing structure
New Area = 2700+1200sqm
Integrating new structure
New Area = 2700+2700sqm
1.Use of existing structures capacity approximately
allows for one storey addition. Increasing the total
floor area by 500sqm.
3.Integration of an independent structural system
would allow for height only constrained by height
regulations.
2.Reinforcement of the existing concrete columns
by enlarging their sections and strengthening of
foundation would allow for an extra 4 storey addition.

Infiltrate verticaly Expand horizontaly Walls act as trusses to cantilever Trusses shift orientation at each floor
Vertical Panels.
Inserted vertically by crane through the whole
existing structure.
Do not require bracing
Panels have simple joints- brackets, screws, flat
plates
Large area of infiltration
Vertical Glulam trusses (inspired by ‘Treet’)
Small area of infiltration, However, Diagonal
braces increase this area because they can not
be inserted vertically. Another option is smaller
diagonal elements brought in from the side of
building.
This increases number of connections (which is
intended to be kept at a minimum).
Truss joints are slightly more complicated than
panel connections.

Shows how the new wooden structure interacts
with the existing concrete and brick elements. How
the presence of wood gradually increases from
floor to floor as one ascends.
11
Street view
The old building maintains its previous presence
along the street preserving the history of the area
while the new additions offset to the background
create a more urban atmosphere. They add to the
diversity of masses and materiality with the cider
wood clad facade.

GULLMARSPLAN PROMENADE
KTH
13
Gullmarsplan station is an important transport
hub with buses, metro and tram connections.
It is located in the south of Stockholm
surrounded by actively developing areas like
Södra Hammarbyhamnen. The area in general
is divided by the highway with offramp, metro
and tram tracks. However, with the proposal to
extend the blue metro southwards comes an
opportunity to further develop this transport hub
and surrounding area, transforming them into
more modern, pleasant, pedestrian and bicycle
oriented areas.
The new web like promenade weaves above and
below the highway connecting the surrounding
areas of Gullmarsplan seamlessly together in a
vibrant way.
It creates new public spaces and activates the
old ones like the Gullmarsplan square itself
by orienting the main transport hub entrance
towards the square instead of towards the road
as it is currently.
The new public spaces are a new sport park-square
next to the existing sport hall. The waterfront
area next to the marina. An entertainment area
in the forest of sky-high pillars supporting the
Skanstull bridge.
The promenade is an opportunity to actively
connect and improve the area, as well as an
opportunity for housing, commercial and cultural
development.

Master Plan
The site for the proposed garage is located on the border of a residential and a light industrial area.
Hence it can be used by workers of the industrial area by day and by the residents to park their vehicles
at night, as parking is a big problem in the area. The garage consists of a spiral parking ramp with
parking on both sides of the one way driveway and a smaller spiral outlet ramp in the center. The
interior spiral structure projects on to the facade consisting of perforated metal panels joint to form a
‘canvas‘ tensioned by exterior steel columns to give it a concave form. The perforated plates allow for
natural ventilation to take place and allow natural light to penetrate into the building.
