Introducing PatSnap
PatSnap is a Global Patent Search and Analysis platform that enables
R&D professionals to obtain a complete picture of the market landscape.
It is driven by IP intelligence, but doesn’t require highly specialised patent
knowledge in order to use.
PatSnap provides exactly what R&D professionals need to keep
up-to-date with all the latest IP data, so that teams can innovate confidently,
while driving down costs.
PatSnap enables you to uncover major risks to projects, scout for
technologies, remain ahead of the competition and identify underlying
changes to a market landscape. In this way, it not only complements the
day-to-day activities of the R&D department, but supports the long-term
strategic goals of the organization.
At PatSnap, our goal is to help organizations innovate
as quickly and as efficiently as possible, so that
existing products and solutions can be improved
and new areas exploited to drive long-term revenue.
Achieving this requires access to information and
data that facilitates the building of a robust,
future-proof and lucrative R&D project portfolio.
3
Reducing the risk associated with innovation, fostering an open culture of
innovation and establishing a fail-faster environment is crucial to the success
of any R&D department. Easy access to key information is the lynchpin of this
approach and it’s where PatSnap’s leading-edge Patent Search and Analysis
solution is indispensable.
Comprising over 110 million patents from 128 jurisdictions, it enables R&D
teams to explore the depth of knowledge available from worldwide IP
information- within single, highly refinable searches. Here are three reasons
why R&D teams across the globe are turning to PatSnap:
Simple
PatSnap’s field search offers a familiar
approach to finding patents and
information relating to your area of interest. You can
quickly search worldwide databases using main IPC,
abstracts and independent claims.
Helpful
We’re aware that information
in patents can be obscure or
difficult to find. PatSnap provides tools to
overcome such issues. For example, our
Keyword Helper automatically identifies
many other terms related to your search,
so you can find all references to
specific technologies.
Flexible
PatSnap provides multiple ways of searching, to suit your needs. For
example, you can search by bulk, semantic, classification, legal, image,
chemical. PatSnap’s search helper tool automatically generates the correct code for
complex queries, including expiry date and claim count, so you can easily narrow your
search, exactly as you wish.
With so many options for finding all the information you need, PatSnap expedites
prior art and FTO searches, so you can bring early stage analysis in-house.
A search method to match your preference
4
For R&D teams, it is important that information can be found and
evaluated quickly, without being held up by the intricacies of how patent
documents are structured, information obfuscated, or any other limitation.
PatSnap is built with precisely these difficulties in mind, and offers a range
of tools to ensure you can uncover the information you need- with minimal
effort. With our in-built tools, you can refine your results and search like
an examiner.
Overcome complexities of IP searches
As searches return more results than would ever
be feasible to analyse, PatSnap provides multiple
features that speed up patent searching.
For example, automatic, out-of-the-box filters, enable you
to narrow down search criteria by factors such as patent
value, authority, or CPC– just by using single clicks.
When performing patent analysis (1), it is important
to be able to navigate between different data views so
that you can easily understand key market trends. Find
the analysis graph tab on the left hand side next to the
search filters.
When patent searching within a technology
area, it is important to be able to clearly define
the technology area so that you can find the
most relevant patents. Using the classification searches
you can quickly and easily find the most applicable IPCs/
CPCs/LOCs/F-terms, so that you can then build a more
powerful and refined search.
For example this will be useful for prior art searches,
and also for market trend analysis.
The IPC Helper enables search by IPC code,
so that, by just using keywords, you can
find all the IPC codes you need to cover the
technologies you’re interested in. And PatSnap can do
the same for CPC codes too.
5
Find information in patents with ease
Not only can you search like an examiner, but you can also get to the
information easily, regardless of where the patent is from, whether that
be Asia Pacific, Europe or the Americas. With features such as one-click
translation, PatSnap offers ways to view all key information at a global level.
As well as making information within patents easy to find, other details
about patents are also on hand. For example, find out who’s cited a specific
patent, discover a patent’s full web of global family connections, or explore
its legal history – all just one click away.
Dual-view, in combination with the keyword highlighter feature, allows users to
compare figures and graphs in a patent directly with the descriptive text, thus
revealing how features of an invention work in combination with one another.
PatSnap’s Citation map (2) is a powerful way of analysing the evolution
of a technology, and assessing for potential infringement risk or licensing
opportunities. The citation map no longer relies on a flash player so can
be used on any device or browser, and gives you the ability to add the generations
of citations directly to workspaces. From there you can analyse which assignees or
technology areas are citing your technology, so you can assess opportunity and risk.
6
Turn IP research into business intelligence
With increasing pressure to ensure company profits remain steadfast in
dynamic technology sectors, it’s up to R&D teams to always be delivering a
faster and more efficient rate of innovation. It’s why it’s hugely valuable to
turn all the information held in patents into technology and trend analysis.
This research must deliver insights that reveal the best direction for R&D
efforts, product road-maps and, ultimately, business strategy. The earlier
that any information relating to aspects of project feasibility are discovered,
the more efficiently R&D teams can direct resources.
As the development phases of future technologies often overlap with
maturity phases of current technologies, being able to identify the key
IPC areas that are pertinent to a specific technology- and then check the
innovation rates- can quickly answer questions such as the viability and longevity of
entering a specific technology area.
Out-of-the-box charts and graphs ensure that you have all the vital data,
visualised and ready to use. Find out key emerging technologies, geographic
areas of activity, prolific companies within technology segments and
inventors, the value of patents and even examine company litigation history.
7
Instant indications of patentability and FTO
Right at the ideation stage, R&D teams must be aware of whether or not
a product has already been patented, and predict whether there will be
freedom-to-operate once a project is complete. Landscaping is the most
efficient way to assess huge volumes of data relating to the information
in patents – by turning this data into a topography that can be visually
explored and interrogated.
With peaks to show areas of high activity and troughs to show areas of
whitespace, this 3D visualization provides instant orientation for any
patent search.
Using the Text Tool in PatSnap’s Landscape feature, a proposed abstract text
for a newly suggested invention can be entered in order to give a prediction
of where the patent is likely to sit within the context of the overall patent
landscape. Within moments, it’s easy to identify which patents will need investigation
for determining any potential infringement risks.
While peaks and troughs show areas of activity, proximity shows levels of
similarity between patents. Other information can then be overlaid onto
the Landscape, such as grids and clusters to define technology areas, or
litigation and licensing data to identify areas of risk or opportunity.
8
Technology scouting and cross industry innovation
As we know, rigorous research sits at the heart of technology scouting
or the open innovation approach. Meanwhile, cross industry innovation,
or cross industrial application, can yield some of the most exciting new
advancements in technologies – as well as some of the most
lucrative opportunities.
With access to the world’s IP data at your fingertips, seeking out these new
applications for technologies is now easier than ever. The approach will
also help with technology diversification, a vital aspect of future planning,
that can prevent a pipeline falling into jeopardy if main R&D activity should
be disrupted.
Use Landscape to quickly identify technologies and technology areas that
are being licensed. PatSnap provides a powerful way for providing hints
to future buyers, sellers, licensors or licensees within a technology area.
Licensing information can be refined specifically to assignees, to view their licensed
competitor portfolios.
Build out your query, or choose a workspace or insights search you’ve done,
and generate a landscape specific to your research strategy.
The IPC Distribution map in PatSnap Analytics means that, whatever industry
you are in, it is possible to discover adjacent technology areas that may
otherwise never have been considered. This information could then be used
to find partners.
View this information, alongside Top CPC in six different formats.
9
Know the landscape and the competition
At a strategic level, organisations have to protect themselves against threats
emerging as a result of competitor activity in various technology sectors.
Having a thorough understanding of the competitive landscape, and IP
trends among competitors, enables organisations to avoid surprises that
could damage future plans.
Using the best forward-looking indicators, R&D teams can monitor
competitors or identify partnership opportunities at the earliest possible
stages of a project.
Use competitor dashboards to assess IP portfolios head-to-head. Locate
where various competitors are active, what technology fields, and whether
they are speeding up or slowing down innovation in different sectors. Form
a view of their strategy and determine how they fit into the competitive landscape.
Competitor strategies can quickly be assessed using PatSnap’s out-of-the-box
charts and graphs. Examine areas of strength and weakness in categories
such as portfolio diversification, joint R&D and specialisations; or even check
the estimated value of competitors’ patent portfolios.
10
Complementing your day-to-day
At PatSnap, we believe that the right tool should slot effortlessly into your
everyday work and support the functions of your business. Whatever your
role, our easy and intuitive tools mean that the right information can be
delivered to you, including on an automatic basis, if you require.
Collaborate with colleagues, create charts for presentations, export and
forward information and interact more efficiently with IP experts.
Create and save
your own lists that
correspond to your
current projects. This means you
do not have to repeat searches,
or cover old ground, to get to
the results you need.
Export the data in multiple different formats in
order to share more widely across the business. This
includes Excel, PDF, RTF, XML and CSV formats. You
can even create PowerPoint presentations directly from the
dashboards, for use in company presentations and reports.
Keep up to date with minimum effort, by using your lists
to create your own customized email alerts. That way, you
can keep on top of any changes in the landscape, without
having to worry about missing something. You can decide whether
you want to be alerted about new patents, or specific changes within
existing groups of patents.
11
PatSnap Workspaces
Collaborating with teams across your organisation has to be quick, seamless
and efficient. With PatSnap workspaces, that is now even easier. You are able
to upload lists of up to 20,000 patents, which can be marked with comments
and custom fields, shared, and edited by anyone in your organisation with a
PatSnap account. If you are the owner of a patent list, you can choose to give
read or write preferences.
Your workspace is an area for you to save and customize your patent analysis. The table format
of the workspaces enables further customization, and gives you a statistical breakdown of each
workspace so that you can quickly assess the activity and content.
In the workspace area, you can select whether you would like to display the workspaces in either table or
grid format.
In the custom analysis on the workspace analysis dashboard, you can plot your custom fields on the X and Y
axis which enables powerful insights specific to your business goals.
Communication and collaboration is key to driving
a streamlined innovation process, and that is why
workspaces are so powerful. It is therefore important
to make sure your team are aware that you are trying to
collaborate, and now they will be alerted when you share a
workspace with them.
When you share a workspace with a colleague, they will
automatically receive an email informing them that they
now have access to the workspace.

  • 3. 3 Reducing the risk associated with innovation, fostering an open culture of innovation and establishing a fail-faster environment is crucial to the success of any R&D department. Easy access to key information is the lynchpin of this approach and it’s where PatSnap’s leading-edge Patent Search and Analysis solution is indispensable. Comprising over 110 million patents from 128 jurisdictions, it enables R&D teams to explore the depth of knowledge available from worldwide IP information- within single, highly refinable searches. Here are three reasons why R&D teams across the globe are turning to PatSnap: Simple PatSnap’s field search offers a familiar approach to finding patents and information relating to your area of interest. You can quickly search worldwide databases using main IPC, abstracts and independent claims. Helpful We’re aware that information in patents can be obscure or difficult to find. PatSnap provides tools to overcome such issues. For example, our Keyword Helper automatically identifies many other terms related to your search, so you can find all references to specific technologies. Flexible PatSnap provides multiple ways of searching, to suit your needs. For example, you can search by bulk, semantic, classification, legal, image, chemical. PatSnap’s search helper tool automatically generates the correct code for complex queries, including expiry date and claim count, so you can easily narrow your search, exactly as you wish. With so many options for finding all the information you need, PatSnap expedites prior art and FTO searches, so you can bring early stage analysis in-house. A search method to match your preference
  • 4. 4 For R&D teams, it is important that information can be found and evaluated quickly, without being held up by the intricacies of how patent documents are structured, information obfuscated, or any other limitation. PatSnap is built with precisely these difficulties in mind, and offers a range of tools to ensure you can uncover the information you need- with minimal effort. With our in-built tools, you can refine your results and search like an examiner. Overcome complexities of IP searches As searches return more results than would ever be feasible to analyse, PatSnap provides multiple features that speed up patent searching. For example, automatic, out-of-the-box filters, enable you to narrow down search criteria by factors such as patent value, authority, or CPC– just by using single clicks. When performing patent analysis (1), it is important to be able to navigate between different data views so that you can easily understand key market trends. Find the analysis graph tab on the left hand side next to the search filters. When patent searching within a technology area, it is important to be able to clearly define the technology area so that you can find the most relevant patents. Using the classification searches you can quickly and easily find the most applicable IPCs/ CPCs/LOCs/F-terms, so that you can then build a more powerful and refined search. For example this will be useful for prior art searches, and also for market trend analysis. The IPC Helper enables search by IPC code, so that, by just using keywords, you can find all the IPC codes you need to cover the technologies you’re interested in. And PatSnap can do the same for CPC codes too.
  • 5. 5 Find information in patents with ease Not only can you search like an examiner, but you can also get to the information easily, regardless of where the patent is from, whether that be Asia Pacific, Europe or the Americas. With features such as one-click translation, PatSnap offers ways to view all key information at a global level. As well as making information within patents easy to find, other details about patents are also on hand. For example, find out who’s cited a specific patent, discover a patent’s full web of global family connections, or explore its legal history – all just one click away. Dual-view, in combination with the keyword highlighter feature, allows users to compare figures and graphs in a patent directly with the descriptive text, thus revealing how features of an invention work in combination with one another. PatSnap’s Citation map (2) is a powerful way of analysing the evolution of a technology, and assessing for potential infringement risk or licensing opportunities. The citation map no longer relies on a flash player so can be used on any device or browser, and gives you the ability to add the generations of citations directly to workspaces. From there you can analyse which assignees or technology areas are citing your technology, so you can assess opportunity and risk.
  • 6. 6 Turn IP research into business intelligence With increasing pressure to ensure company profits remain steadfast in dynamic technology sectors, it’s up to R&D teams to always be delivering a faster and more efficient rate of innovation. It’s why it’s hugely valuable to turn all the information held in patents into technology and trend analysis. This research must deliver insights that reveal the best direction for R&D efforts, product road-maps and, ultimately, business strategy. The earlier that any information relating to aspects of project feasibility are discovered, the more efficiently R&D teams can direct resources. As the development phases of future technologies often overlap with maturity phases of current technologies, being able to identify the key IPC areas that are pertinent to a specific technology- and then check the innovation rates- can quickly answer questions such as the viability and longevity of entering a specific technology area. Out-of-the-box charts and graphs ensure that you have all the vital data, visualised and ready to use. Find out key emerging technologies, geographic areas of activity, prolific companies within technology segments and inventors, the value of patents and even examine company litigation history.
  • 7. 7 Instant indications of patentability and FTO Right at the ideation stage, R&D teams must be aware of whether or not a product has already been patented, and predict whether there will be freedom-to-operate once a project is complete. Landscaping is the most efficient way to assess huge volumes of data relating to the information in patents – by turning this data into a topography that can be visually explored and interrogated. With peaks to show areas of high activity and troughs to show areas of whitespace, this 3D visualization provides instant orientation for any patent search. Using the Text Tool in PatSnap’s Landscape feature, a proposed abstract text for a newly suggested invention can be entered in order to give a prediction of where the patent is likely to sit within the context of the overall patent landscape. Within moments, it’s easy to identify which patents will need investigation for determining any potential infringement risks. While peaks and troughs show areas of activity, proximity shows levels of similarity between patents. Other information can then be overlaid onto the Landscape, such as grids and clusters to define technology areas, or litigation and licensing data to identify areas of risk or opportunity.
  • 8. 8 Technology scouting and cross industry innovation As we know, rigorous research sits at the heart of technology scouting or the open innovation approach. Meanwhile, cross industry innovation, or cross industrial application, can yield some of the most exciting new advancements in technologies – as well as some of the most lucrative opportunities. With access to the world’s IP data at your fingertips, seeking out these new applications for technologies is now easier than ever. The approach will also help with technology diversification, a vital aspect of future planning, that can prevent a pipeline falling into jeopardy if main R&D activity should be disrupted. Use Landscape to quickly identify technologies and technology areas that are being licensed. PatSnap provides a powerful way for providing hints to future buyers, sellers, licensors or licensees within a technology area. Licensing information can be refined specifically to assignees, to view their licensed competitor portfolios. Build out your query, or choose a workspace or insights search you’ve done, and generate a landscape specific to your research strategy. The IPC Distribution map in PatSnap Analytics means that, whatever industry you are in, it is possible to discover adjacent technology areas that may otherwise never have been considered. This information could then be used to find partners. View this information, alongside Top CPC in six different formats.
  • 9. 9 Know the landscape and the competition At a strategic level, organisations have to protect themselves against threats emerging as a result of competitor activity in various technology sectors. Having a thorough understanding of the competitive landscape, and IP trends among competitors, enables organisations to avoid surprises that could damage future plans. Using the best forward-looking indicators, R&D teams can monitor competitors or identify partnership opportunities at the earliest possible stages of a project. Use competitor dashboards to assess IP portfolios head-to-head. Locate where various competitors are active, what technology fields, and whether they are speeding up or slowing down innovation in different sectors. Form a view of their strategy and determine how they fit into the competitive landscape. Competitor strategies can quickly be assessed using PatSnap’s out-of-the-box charts and graphs. Examine areas of strength and weakness in categories such as portfolio diversification, joint R&D and specialisations; or even check the estimated value of competitors’ patent portfolios.
