- was/were + verb+ing.
Examples: I was watching TV yesterday.
We were sleeping when our house alarm went off.
He was listening to music this afternoon.

For something that happened before and after an action.
For something that continued for a long time.
For something that was happening again and again.

Examples: Tim was playing video games when I got home.
I was going to dance practice when my dog got sick

Examples: My sister was running
