April 2018
These slides online at http://www.slideshare.net/cilip
CILIP is your professional association.
Our relationship with each individual
member is a partnership to secure
the success of your career.
Partnership and collaboration are at the
core of our Royal Charter:
• To unite all persons engaged or
interested in information science and
libraries and information services;
• To represent and act as the
professional body for persons working
in or interested in library and
information services;
• To work with similar institutes
overseas and with appropriate
international bodies;
CILIP Constitutional Documents (1898, amended 2014)
• The modern, influential professional
association our sector needs
• Helping members future-proof their skills
and career
• More inclusive and affordable membership
fees and benefits
• A new model of professionalism – attracting,
retaining and developing talent
• A more visible, proactive and influential
champion to Government, the media and
other sectors

Ethical professionals
The ethical, reflective Information
Professional has three connected
roles to play in combatting fake
news
“Fair Trade” information
Enabling the ethical,
accountable & lawful
production, supply and
distribution of knowledge,
data & information
Meaningful regulation
Ensuring that regulatory
authorities are able to
combat systematic
misinformation without
eroding citizen’s rights
Empowered citizens
Educating information-
literate citizens to ensure
they are resilient to fake
news & do not amplify the
problem
Developing a culture of collaboration at CILIP – some examples
Joint CILIP/Health Education
England (HEE)/HLG campaign
#AMillionDecisions
Promoting the role of librarians and
information professionals in evidence-
based healthcare
 Shared goal
 Existing relationships
 Lots of stakeholders
 Different ideas of success
 No ‘transition plan’
Joint CILIP/Information
Literacy Group (ILG) campaign
#FactsMatter
Promoting awareness of Information
Literacy and its role in combatting
fake news and misinformation
 Existing relationship
 Shared objective
 Defined deadline
 Confidence and trust
 Lack of a clear ‘what next?’
Amnesty CILIP Honour (part of the
Carnegie Greenaway Awards)
Celebrating the connection between great
childrens literature and illustration and an
understanding of Human Rights
 Shared values
 Good relationships
 High profile
 Reputational risk
 Branding challenges
 Introducing new, difficult conversations
And one or two which didn’t go so well!
Europeana Inside
Multi-partner EU-funded project to enable 8 different software companies to create
a shared digitisation & workflow tool
 No common purpose (‘in it for the money’)
 Team hastily assembled (no social capital)
 Too many chiefs
 Intended ‘beneficiary’ wasn’t interested
 The end of the project was the end
 Competing interests
Losing a sponsorship deal
CILIP was contacted by a long-standing partner to say they were withdrawing
their sponsorship with no notice due to a change in business priorities
 Went and met face-to-face
 Discussed the situation and its impact
 Agreed a ‘conscious uncoupling’
 Maintained a positive relationship
 Several months later, identified a new more relevant opportunity
 Created a new and stronger partnership
Some lessons learned…
 Good partnerships, like good friendships, are rare & need nurturing
 Before anything else, build relationships
 Take the time to establish whether you have values in common
 Be honest about your own objectives/motivations
 Invite your collaborators to be honest about theirs
 Have a common goal which delivers mutual benefit
 Write stuff down!
 Don’t be afraid to walk away (but don’t burn bridges!)
Building collaborations in HE
• CILIP HE Hub launched 17.04.2018
• Part of an ongoing campaign to improve our
support for librarians and information professionals
in HE
• Highlighting relevant content and resources
• Supporting networking through ARGL, ILG and
other communities
• Developing an MOU with SCONUL and other
partners
• Developing policy in key areas, notably Open
Access & Scholarly Communications
• https://www.cilip.org.uk/page/Highereducation
The secret to a happy partnership or collaboration is very much like
the secret to a happy relationship…
 Be honest
 Communicate
 Have an exit strategy
Be part of your profession

Partnership and collaboration at the heart of our professional future

  • 1. Partnership and collaboration at the heart of our professional future Nick Poole, CILIP CEO ARLG Working Together: Partnership and Collaboration April 2018 These slides online at http://www.slideshare.net/cilip
  • 2. CILIP is your professional association. Our relationship with each individual member is a partnership to secure the success of your career.
  • 3. Partnership and collaboration are at the core of our Royal Charter: • To unite all persons engaged or interested in information science and libraries and information services; • To represent and act as the professional body for persons working in or interested in library and information services; • To work with similar institutes overseas and with appropriate international bodies; CILIP Constitutional Documents (1898, amended 2014)
  • 4. • The modern, influential professional association our sector needs • Helping members future-proof their skills and career • More inclusive and affordable membership fees and benefits • A new model of professionalism – attracting, retaining and developing talent • A more visible, proactive and influential champion to Government, the media and other sectors

  • 7. “A community is the conversations it has…”
  • 8. Some of our greatest challenges will only be solved through partnership and collaboration…
  • 9.
  • 10.
  • 12. Ethical professionals The ethical, reflective Information Professional has three connected roles to play in combatting fake news “Fair Trade” information Enabling the ethical, accountable & lawful production, supply and distribution of knowledge, data & information Meaningful regulation Ensuring that regulatory authorities are able to combat systematic misinformation without eroding citizen’s rights Empowered citizens Educating information- literate citizens to ensure they are resilient to fake news & do not amplify the problem
  • 13. Developing a culture of collaboration at CILIP – some examples
  • 14. Joint CILIP/Health Education England (HEE)/HLG campaign #AMillionDecisions Promoting the role of librarians and information professionals in evidence- based healthcare  Shared goal  Existing relationships  Lots of stakeholders  Different ideas of success  No ‘transition plan’
  • 15. Joint CILIP/Information Literacy Group (ILG) campaign #FactsMatter Promoting awareness of Information Literacy and its role in combatting fake news and misinformation  Existing relationship  Shared objective  Defined deadline  Confidence and trust  Lack of a clear ‘what next?’
  • 16. Amnesty CILIP Honour (part of the Carnegie Greenaway Awards) Celebrating the connection between great childrens literature and illustration and an understanding of Human Rights  Shared values  Good relationships  High profile  Reputational risk  Branding challenges  Introducing new, difficult conversations
  • 17. And one or two which didn’t go so well!
  • 18. Europeana Inside Multi-partner EU-funded project to enable 8 different software companies to create a shared digitisation & workflow tool  No common purpose (‘in it for the money’)  Team hastily assembled (no social capital)  Too many chiefs  Intended ‘beneficiary’ wasn’t interested  The end of the project was the end  Competing interests
  • 19. Losing a sponsorship deal CILIP was contacted by a long-standing partner to say they were withdrawing their sponsorship with no notice due to a change in business priorities  Went and met face-to-face  Discussed the situation and its impact  Agreed a ‘conscious uncoupling’  Maintained a positive relationship  Several months later, identified a new more relevant opportunity  Created a new and stronger partnership
  • 20. Some lessons learned…  Good partnerships, like good friendships, are rare & need nurturing  Before anything else, build relationships  Take the time to establish whether you have values in common  Be honest about your own objectives/motivations  Invite your collaborators to be honest about theirs  Have a common goal which delivers mutual benefit  Write stuff down!  Don’t be afraid to walk away (but don’t burn bridges!)
  • 21. Building collaborations in HE • CILIP HE Hub launched 17.04.2018 • Part of an ongoing campaign to improve our support for librarians and information professionals in HE • Highlighting relevant content and resources • Supporting networking through ARGL, ILG and other communities • Developing an MOU with SCONUL and other partners • Developing policy in key areas, notably Open Access & Scholarly Communications • https://www.cilip.org.uk/page/Highereducation
  • 22. The secret to a happy partnership or collaboration is very much like the secret to a happy relationship…  Be honest  Communicate  Have an exit strategy
  • 23. Be part of your profession www.cilip.org.uk/join

Editor's Notes

  1. As of today, we have ~12,350 members across all four nations of the UK We typically welcome 1,200 to 1,300 new members to CILIP membership each year This is offset by circa 1,500 people leaving membership due to retirement or job losses (45% of our current membership technically reach minimum retirement age within the next decade) We have members in every part of the public, private and 3rd sector – representing a widely embedded profession
