Part 1: Social norms are defined as the expectations a group or society has regarding situations or individuals within that group or society. In some circumstances this translates to the expectation that older adults need to act old. There are different theories regarding social aging, many of which reflect a particular social norm or even generational perspective on social aging. For example, role theory reflects how a person ages based on his or her perceived roles. According to this theory, a person’s career would often help identify who that person is, such as a doctor, nurse, mechanic, or cook. Another view is the life course perspective, which looks at aging through a longitudinal perspective based on life experiences and normative and non-normative life events. Describe two other social theories on aging. Explain the strengths and weaknesses of one of the theories chosen and compare it to the life course perspective and role theory. Explain how social norms can lead to stereotypical views of older adults. Describe how these views are being challenged and changed. Explain, from a social support and relationship perspective, how older adults utilize tradition and rituals to come to terms with normative and non-normative life events. Part 2: Dating, marriage, and intimacy; many people think of these things as activities for the younger generations. This is a common perception, but is it necessarily true? Older adults do date, marry, and have intimate relationships. Gender roles are being redefined from generation to generation. What was the social norm for men and women in the 1930s and 40s is significantly different from some of the social norms of today. We begin to learn social norms as children. Although our perceptions may change as we grow older, to a certain extent, our norms are rooted in the world of our parents Explain some of the unique characteristics of social relationships in regards to dating, marriage, and intimacy for older adults. Describe the differences between older and younger adults in these areas. Describe some of the differences in social norms of older adults, as compared to someone in his or her twenties. Explain how an older adult is able to adapt and change as social norms change over time, as well as the ways in which a person may not adapt to the changes in social norms. .

This theory will enhance our understanding why teenagers get engaged in certain harmful behaviors to be accepted by their peers and identify with them.
Observational learning posits that people observe, retain and imitate specific behavioral patterns. They later display behavior and traits similar to those of others in society. This can help illustrate how teenagers who join bad groups end up copying the harmful behaviors they see. Spending time with peers who engage in harmful behavior like drinking is likely to trigger one to replicate such behavior. It all starts with observing then retaining and later replicating what they see.
These two theories enhance understanding of why teenagers behave in certain ways enabling psychologists to develop treatment approaches and public health programs to help teenagers resist joining harmful behaviors. They have powerful influence on our understanding of different aspects of mental health and overall well-being.

Being an important element in society, it has been discussed and many have tried to explain it the best they can. The publications by Holly Devor offer beneficial insights into this subject. As a professor in sociology, she stands qualified to point some of the issues or items required to understanding the concept of gender in society. She proposes that despite anatomical features being largely responsible for defining sex or gender of individual’s society seems to play a more important role in this subject. To back up her suggestions she gives information demonstrating the role of society in shaping gender roles as well how these roles are perceived and taken up by individuals.
In her publication, she begins by giving the pillars of gender in society and one information that controls the subject of gender as she points is that of being binary. Under this principle, she introduces two major concepts in the discussions of sex and gender, which are masculinity and femininity (Dover, 2001). Under these two classification individuals in society are highly expected to identify themselves with either one or the other category. This process begins at an early age and though biological and more specifically anatomical features should control it there is an overwhelming societal influence that dictates how an individual perceives masculinity or femininity. She goes on to back up these suggestions by analyzing how children develop and settle in to their specific gender categories.
According to Devor, “children start identifying their identities between the ages of eighteen months and two years” (Dover, 2001). Such a step is facilitated by several factors and most revolve around the concept of acquired behavior, which is socially driven. Here boys start to identify themselves as boys according to external expectations and orientations as well as internal perception, the very same applies for girls (Dover, 2001). When both the external forces, which are based on society and culture norms and expectations match with the internal forces of self-perception then individuals eventually identify themselves as either female or male. The study she pointed proves this as children who were asked to identify the gender identities of dolls focused more on the features, which are the social standards for gender such as long hair, dresses among others. However, there is a considerable change in this fact in today’s society mainly because such features have largely diminished in terms of their ability to be used as standards for identifying gender identities. For example, it is common to find men with long hair or wearing attire, which is mostly associated with women due to changes in fashion, preference among other factors. Statuses, Roles and Social Structures
What are the components that make up a society? This may seem like a simple question, but it actually is quite complex, as society is enormously complicated. An initial response might be that society is composed of individuals. After all, it is people that make up society, right? Certainly, society is a concept that generally, for our purposes, refers to humans (although it can be used for other species as well), and many humans together form a society. But, interestingly, sociologists could come up with other responses that show that society is not really made up of the individuals that comprise it; or, perhaps more accurately, it is not the individuals alone that make up society, as society is much more than just the sum of all the individuals.
A more sociological approach is to look at the basic components of society as being statutes and roles, rather than individuals. A status is a social construct―it is an idea or perception that has been created through people’s social and cultural practices and beliefs. And to define these terms, a status is a position that a person occupies in society, and the role is what the person does in that status, or the expectations that others have for someone in that status. So, for example, in a classroom one status is teacher, and some of the expectations that are attached to the status of being a teacher are leading the class, offering instruction, giving assignments, helping students who are struggling and the like. All of these expectations form the role of teacher; because others have, through experience, formed expectations of what teachers should do, teachers see all of these as their job description. Another status in a classroom is a student. What are some of the roles attached to the status of student?
So, while we might think of a classroom as consisting of individuals, what we really have are individuals who are occupying specific statuses and playing specific roles. Note that these statuses and roles consist of roughly the same qualities irrespective of any specific individual; the expectations for a teacher are roughly the same whether it is Mr. Gomez or Ms. Yamamoto who is the specific teacher in the classroom. Discussion: Perspectives on the Aging Process
You may be familiar with the phrases, “You’re only as old as you feel” and “age is nothing but a number.” To what extent do you believe these common sayings? Do you see yourself as younger or older than your biological age? And what are your views on the aging process—is it something to be avoided and feared, or celebrated?
As individuals grow older, they experience biological changes, but how they experience those changes varies considerably. Someone who is particularly fit at 70, for example, might perceive themselves to be in their 50s. And someone who has dealt with significant hardship and ailing health who is 70 might feel like they are in their 80s. Aging adults’ experiences are influenced not only by how they feel but also by how an older adult should look or should act, according to societal norms and stereotypes.

It is important because although; a young person may have held down a job, and acts mature, they have not yet experienced enough of life to be considered an adult. The same concept goes for middle aged people. Although; a middle aged person is active, and looks younger than their age, they are still considered to be middle aged. In other words regardless of the accomplishments of a person, their looks, and vitality, they are still catergorized in society by their age. Behaviors that might delay the cognitive, or social aspect of the aging process are socializing with friends and within the community, and participating in activities such as swimming, bingo, traveling, and other hobbies that enhance to cognitive apects of aging.It is proven that people who continue to be active socially, age gracefully, and without limits. They also continue to work brain cells that could eventually die out from dementia, and other illnesses.. Physically a person might speed up the aging process by isolating themselves from friends and family, by not focusing on health and nutrition, and by becoming a couch potato. When a person does not take care of themselves by exercising, and watching what they eat, they end up suffering from illnesses such as diabetes, limit their mobility, and are eventually confined to walkers, wheelchairs, and medications in their later years of life.

According to Zastrow & Kirst Ashman (2016), individuals within the ages of 18 and 65 years are classified as young and middle adulthood. In as much as this classification has been in existence and popular, one can argue that, to determine the term adult hood may not be as easy as it sounds. Adulthood can be perceived differently from people, considering their culture, religion, personal belief, and social economic background. According to Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman (2016), “it is difficult to pinpoint the exact time of life we are referring to when we talk about young adulthood”. Some cultures such as the Nigerian culture, consider adulthood as a period where a child can comfortably carter for his /herself without seeking the help of the parents/guardian. Such age range may be around the ages 27to 30. Other cultures perceive young adulthood as the age where a child can comfortably make good decision in line with the expectation of older adults.
To replace or improve on Zatrow & Kirst Ashman classification on young and middle adulthood, I will suggest a classification of young adulthood and middle adulthood from the ages of 15 to 50. The concept of gender identity is still one area that is still largely being explored mainly due to its vastness. Being an important element in society, it has been discussed and many have tried to explain it the best they can. The publications by Holly Devor offer beneficial insights into this subject. As a professor in sociology, she stands qualified to point some of the issues or items required to understanding the concept of gender in society. She proposes that despite anatomical features being largely responsible for defining sex or gender of individual’s society seems to play a more important role in this subject. To back up her suggestions she gives information demonstrating the role of society in shaping gender roles as well how these roles are perceived and taken up by individuals.
In her publication, she begins by giving the pillars of gender in society and one information that controls the subject of gender as she points is that of being binary. Under this principle, she introduces two major concepts in the discussions of sex and gender, which are masculinity and femininity (Dover, 2001). Under these two classification individuals in society are highly expected to identify themselves with either one or the other category. This process begins at an early age and though biological and more specifically anatomical features should control it there is an overwhelming societal influence that dictates how an individual perceives masculinity or femininity. She goes on to back up these suggestions by analyzing how children develop and settle in to their specific gender categories.
According to Devor, “children start identifying their identities between the ages of eighteen months and two years” (Dover, 2001). Such a step is facilitated by several factors and most revolve around the concept of acquired behavior, which is socially driven. Here boys start to identify themselves as boys according to external expectations and orientations as well as internal perception, the very same applies for girls (Dover, 2001). When both the external forces, which are based on society and culture norms and expectations match with the internal forces of self-perception then individuals eventually identify themselves as either female or male. The study she pointed proves this as children who were asked to identify the gender identities of dolls focused more on the features, which are the social standards for gender such as long hair, dresses among others. However, there is a considerable change in this fact in today’s society mainly because such features have largely diminished in terms of their ability to be used as standards for identifying gender identities. For example, it is common to find men with long hair or wearing attire, which is mostly associated with women due to changes in fashion, preference among other factors. Statuses, Roles and Social Structures
What are the components that make up a society? This may seem like a simple question, but it actually is quite complex, as society is enormously complicated. An initial response might be that society is composed of individuals. After all, it is people that make up society, right? Certainly, society is a concept that generally, for our purposes, refers to humans (although it can be used for other species as well), and many humans together form a society. But, interestingly, sociologists could come up with other responses that show that society is not really made up of the individuals that comprise it; or, perhaps more accurately, it is not the individuals alone that make up society, as society is much more than just the sum of all the individuals.
A more sociological approach is to look at the basic components of society as being statutes and roles, rather than individuals. A status is a social construct―it is an idea or perception that has been created through people’s social and cultural practices and beliefs. And to define these terms, a status is a position that a person occupies in society, and the role is what the person does in that status, or the expectations that others have for someone in that status. So, for example, in a classroom one status is teacher, and some of the expectations that are attached to the status of being a teacher are leading the class, offering instruction, giving assignments, helping students who are struggling and the like. All of these expectations form the role of teacher; because others have, through experience, formed expectations of what teachers should do, teachers see all of these as their job description. Another status in a classroom is a student. What are some of the roles attached to the status of student?
So, while we might think of a classroom as consisting of individuals, what we really have are individuals who are occupying specific statuses and playing specific roles. Note that these statuses and roles consist of roughly the same qualities irrespective of any specific individual; the expectations for a teacher are roughly the same whether it is Mr. Gomez or Ms. Yamamoto who is the specific teacher in the classroom. You may be familiar with the phrases, “You’re only as old as you feel” and “age is nothing but a number.” To what extent do you believe these common sayings? Do you see yourself as younger or older than your biological age? And what are your views on the aging process—is it something to be avoided and feared, or celebrated?
As individuals grow older, they experience biological changes, but how they experience those changes varies considerably. Someone who is particularly fit at 70, for example, might perceive themselves to be in their 50s. And someone who has dealt with significant hardship and ailing health who is 70 might feel like they are in their 80s. Aging adults’ experiences are influenced not only by how they feel but also by how an older adult should look or should act, according to societal norms and stereotypes.

You can use that to explain how people behave when they are in an elevator. Most people face forward, look up at the numbers, and don't talk.
Many of your experiences can be analyzed using sociological concepts. For your final assessment, Assessment 6, you will complete a Sociology of Me and apply many of the concepts you have learned about in this course to your own life. For Assessment 5, begin to think about which concepts you would like to apply to your own experience, develop an outline, and identify appropriate resources. In order to complete this assessment, you will need to show your understanding of some additional concepts related to social structure, education, and technology/media.

Although people tend to often believe that they act as individuals and aren't impacted by others, research has found this is usually not the case. The Milgram experiment in your Resources is a great example. Milgram (1963) examined conformity and obedience and found that people are highly influenced by authority and the demands of conformity, even to the point that we will inflict pain on another person to obey authority.

In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

- 1. Part 1: Social norms are defined as the expectations a group or society has regarding situations or individuals within that group or society. In some circumstances this translates to the expectation that older adults need to act old. There are different theories regarding social aging, many of which reflect a particular social norm or even generational perspective on social aging. For example, role theory reflects how a person ages based on his or her perceived roles. According to this theory, a person’s career would often help identify who that person is, such as a doctor, nurse, mechanic, or cook. Another view is the life course perspective, which looks at aging through a longitudinal perspective based on life experiences and normative and non- normative life events. Describe two other social theories on aging. Explain the strengths and weaknesses of one of the theories chosen and compare it to the life course perspective and role theory. Explain how social norms can lead to stereotypical views of older adults. Describe how these views are being challenged and changed. Explain, from a social support and relationship perspective, how older adults utilize tradition and rituals to come to terms with normative and non-normative life events. Justify your answers with appropriate reasoning and research from your text and course readings. Although our perceptions may change as we grow older, to a certain extent, our norms are rooted in the world of our parents Explain some of the unique characteristics of social relationships in regards to dating, marriage, and intimacy for older adults. Describe the differences between older and younger adults in these areas. Describe some of the differences in social norms of older adults, as compared to someone in his or her twenties. Explain how an older adult is able to adapt and change as social norms change over time, as well as the ways in which a person may not adapt to the changes in social norms.
