Parent Management Training Guide - Improve Your Parenting Skills
Many parents find themselves in need of guidance in the management of their child's behavior.
Parents often have wonderful intentions, but lack the skills to handle the problematic behaviors that
their children may display. An informative and practical parent management training guide can be a
great resource to parents who need to learn techniques to deal with their children's behaviors. The
ideal parent management training guide would contain several important components.
Effective Communication
Communication requires several skills. Parents need to make direct eye contact, to speak with words
that children can understand, and give children time to have their feelings and concerns heard. It is
also vital that parents make sure that children understand a parent's instructions, or expectations for
their behavior. Parents can achieve this by talking with children, and asking their child to reflect back
to the parent their own understanding of what the parent has said. This allows parents the opportunity
to clarify their message.
Rules and Contracts
It is also important for parents to learn to clearly state rules of the house. Some parents also will post
the rules. This gives children a clear sense of direction, expectations, and structure in the home.
With older children, contracts can also be used to clearly outline expectations and punishments for
infractions with certain situations. Contracts can be a great way to clearly communicate with a child
regarding special situations, such as agreeing to buy a family pet, or allowing a teenager to use the
family car emotions during communication.
Alternatives to Corporal Punishment
Parents do use spanking as a means to control behaviors. However, children seldom learn from
spanking. Children typically change their behaviors to avoid spankings, but may really feel remorse
for their actions, or learn from their misdeeds. Parents need to use other forms of discipline. Time out
is a commonly used practice with children, who are typically two to ten years of age. Parents can
send a child to a time out area to calm down, usually for one minute per years of the child's age. In
other words, a four year old child would go to time out for four minutes. Parents can utilize a timer to
signal children when time out is over. Time out is effective when it removes the parent's attention from
a child, and children usually crave a parent's attention. They will often calm down and become
compliant in order to regain a parent's attention.
Parents can also use point charts, where children earn a point for each positive behavior they display.
Children can earn rewards for obtaining a certain number of points each week. The idea is to
reinforce positive behaviors and reward them, so that they will be repeated.
These elements form the foundation of any effective parent management training guide. The ideal
guide contains self-evaluation tests, examples, and practice exercises to help parent's gain
understanding and build skills in the discipline and guidance of their children.
