Medical parasitology studies parasites that infect humans and the relationship between parasites and their human hosts. It covers the morphology, lifecycle, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, transmission, and prevention of parasitic diseases. Parasites are classified as protozoa, helminthes, or arthropods. Protozoa are unicellular parasites while helminthes and arthropods are multicellular. The study of protozoans is called protozoology, which began in the late 17th century when protozoans were first observed under microscopes. Protozoans also serve as experimental models in cell and molecular biology research.
