Webinar: NAS vs. Object Storage: 10 Reasons Why Object Storage Will WinStorage Switzerland
Join Storage Switzerland's Founder George Crump and Caringo's VP of Products Tony Barbagallo for this on demand webinar. They compare NAS and object storage and provide 10 reasons they think object storage will be the file server of the future for the enterprise.
Object Storage promises many things - unlimited scalability, both in terms of capacity and file count, low cost but highly redundant capacity and excellent connectivity to legacy NAS. But, despite these promises object storage has not caught on in the enterprise like it has in the cloud. It seems like, for the enterprise object storage just isn’t a good fit. The problem is that most object storage system’s starting capacity is too large. And while connectivity to legacy NAS systems is available, seamless integration is not. Can object storage be sized so that it is a better fit for the enterprise?

Even the best system administrator cannot always avoids any and
every disaster that may plague his data center, but he should have a
contingency plan to recover from one - and an administrator that
manages his virtual data centers with oVirt is of course no different.
This session will cover the new features introduced in oVirt 3.5.0 to
handle such scenarios and will showcase how stringing together a set
of building blocks can produce a well rounded solution for disaster
scenarios.
At Percona Live in April 2016, Red Hat's Kyle Bader answered questions like, "How does MySQL perform on different forms of virtualization?" and "How can you use Ceph for the storage backend?" He also presented the results of MySQL and file-level benchmarks obtained using tools like Percona TPCC, Sysbench and FIO, the positive and negative sides of each virtualization technology, and tuning guidelines to maximize performance.
This presentation provides an overview of the Dell PowerEdge R730xd server performance results with Red Hat Ceph Storage. It covers the advantages of using Red Hat Ceph Storage on Dell servers with their proven hardware components that provide high scalability, enhanced ROI cost benefits, and support of unstructured data.
We are in the midst of a computing revolution. As the cost of provisioning hardware and software stacks grows, and the cost of securing and administering these complex systems grows even faster, we're seeing a shift towards computing clouds. For cloud service providers, there is efficiency from amortizing costs and averaging usage peaks. Internet portals like Yahoo! have long offered application services, such as email for individuals and organizations. Companies are now offering services such as storage and compute cycles, enabling higher-level services to be built on top. In this talk, I will discuss Yahoo!'s vision of cloud computing, and describe some of the key initiatives, highlighting the technical challenges involved in designing hosted, multi-tenanted data management systems.
Disaster Recovery in the Cloud -- A Failover Testing Case StudyOnline Tech

Hadoop World 2011: Hadoop as a Service in CloudCloudera, Inc.
Hadoop framework is often built on native environment with commodity hardware as its original design. However, with growing tendency of cloud computing, there is stronger requirement to build hadoop cluster on a public/private cloud in order for customers to benefit from virtualization and multi-tenancy. My speech want to introduce some challenges to provide hadoop service on virtualization platform like: performance, rack awareness, job scheduling, memory over commitment, etc and propose some solutions.
In this topography Panzura Cloud Controllers are used as unmanaged file servers of user home directories. The authoritative copy is maintained on the back end storage in the central data center. The 3% of actively used data is also stored on the Panzura CC, and users mount it with NFS or CIFS.This provides very fast unmanaged file service for remote locations. Changed data is mirrored to all othe Panzura CCs, stored at the IT center, and/or can be stored at a Cloud site.Panzura can also be used as a high throughput pipe to your internal Archive/DR site, handling deduplication, compression, and encryption. Panzura archives can be read at any time because they are stored as files.
Panzura ACC is perfect for cloud and distributed environmentsThe meta data which consists of filenames, directory names, author, security, dates, and most importantly, the global block deduplication dictionary is kept separate from the data itself. The meta data and the data are snashotted separately and sent (main and incrementals) to various locations. The meta data is always snapped and sent to all Panzura ACCs. The data may optionally be kept in a separate internal/external cloud. Thanks to the small amount of meta data that needs to be transferred, it enables all nodes to always have a complete view of the Enterprise data for browsing and searching. The Panzura Application Cloud Controller (ACC) also “owns” the data which enables it to know where the authoritative copy is located – in the cloud or in a specific controller if the write has not been synchronized with the final repository yet. Only the “delta” in the data is exchanged across controllers making it a very powerful replication solution. For example, if someone changes words in a 10MB powerpoint, only the text changes will be communicated to the controllers to make sure that they have the latest copy.Because the global deduplication dictionary is maintained everywhere, if a user were to upload a 2GB windows7.iso in San Francisco and another user in Tokyo uploaded windows7_w_sp1.iso, the upload in Tokyo will be uploading the meta data (very small, few KB max) and then the difference between window7.iso and windows7_w_sp1.iso which is much less than 2GB. The Panzura ACC has a patent pending global deduplication technology. The implementation currently has a 7% overhead, so if the difference between window7.iso and windows7_w_sp1.iso was 100GB, the resulting diff will generally be at most 107GB.All the data stored in the cloud is encrypted and the keys are stored at the customer’s premise, no Panzura device is needed in the cloud, securing the data even if a disk is thrown away at the cloud vendor’s site. There is no risk for the Enterprise of a breach in the security of its data making it more secure than local storage. This is relevant with an internal or external cloud. For external cloud, the need to not expose keys is obvious. But even in internal clouds, but not keeping keys there, the security requirements to create and maintain such internal cloud results in a lower TCO and allows enterprises to mimic external cloud storage architectures for their buildout instead of creating a new one with specific security features.
