A Woman Who was Forced to offer her kidney” This was a case of a woman of 22 years of age who came to donate a kidney for our patient who was supposedly her brother. She was a good match, but I strongly suspected that she was not related and was either being coerced or being paid to donate the kidney. We have a policy against doing transplants from unrelated donors. We make it very clear that we will consider a transplant only if the donor is related to the recipient and is not doing it for gain. I asked her several times but she said that she was his sister. I still had my suspicions, so I sent her to a psychiatrist for assessment. She was of subnormal intelligence and did not understand the procedure. We could have refused to do the operation here, but they would have gone to some other center and had it done anyway. So, we carried out the operation. Much later, we learned that she was a paid, distantly related person who was possibly forced by her family. We are trying to avoid that this becomes a commercialized process of buying and selling goods in the market.

Smart Villages organized a workshop on the use of renewable energies for the electrification of rural communities in Bolivia, which was held on April 28, 2016 in La Paz, Bolivia. The workshop aimed to outline new prospects for reducing rural poverty through access and use of sustainable energy sources.
The workshop was set to facilitate the analysis and exchange between the stakeholders from the public sector, civil societies and the private sector engaged in the field of the electrification of off-grid rural communities. Topics discussed include distributed generation and penetration of renewable energy sources in the energy matrix, the productive use of energy in rural communities; monitoring and assessment; clean cooking technologies; solar heating; and entrepreneurship in the rural energy sector. The role of energy in improving the level of community resilience against disasters was discussed as well.

Organ Sales Will Save Lives
There are thousands of people dying to buy a kidney, and thousands of
people dying to sell a kidney. It seems a match made in heaven. So why are we
standing in the way? Governments should not ban the sale of human organs;
they should regulate it. Lives should not be wasted; they should be saved.
About 350,000 Americans suffer from end-stage renal disease1, a state of
kidney disorder so advanced that the organ stops functioning altogether. There
are no miracle drugs that can revive a failed kidney, leaving dialysis and kidney
transplantation as the only possible treatments.
Dialysis is harsh, expensive, and, worst of all, only temporary. Acting as
an artificial kidney, dialysis mechanically filters the blood of a patient. It works,
but not well. With treatment sessions lasting three hours, several times a week,
those dependent on dialysis are, in a sense, shackled to a machine for the rest of
their lives. Adding excessive stress to the body, dialysis causes patients to feel
increasingly faint and tired, usually keeping them from work and other normal
activities.
Kidney transplantation, on the other hand, is the closest thing to a cure
that anyone could hope for. Today the procedure is both safe and reliable,
causing few complications. With better technology for confirming tissue matches
and new anti-rejection drugs, the surgery is simple.
But those hoping for a new kidney have high hopes indeed. In the year
2000 alone, 2583 Americans died while waiting for a kidney transplant;
worldwide the number of deaths is around 50,000.2 With the sale of organs
outlawed in almost every country, the number of living donors willing to part
with a kidney for free is small. When no family member is a suitable candidate
for donation, the patient is placed on a deceased donors list, relying on the
organs from people dying of old age or accidents. The list is long. With over
60,000 people in line in the United States alone, the average wait for a cadaverous
kidney is ten long years.
Daunted by the low odds, some have turned to an alternative solution:
purchasing kidneys on the black market. For about $150,000, they can buy a
fresh kidney from a healthy, living donor. There are no lines, no waits. Arranged
through a broker, the entire procedure is carefully planned out. The buyer, seller,
surgeons, and nurses are flown to a predetermined hospital in a foreign country.
The operations are performed, and then all are flown back to their respective
homes. There is no follow-up, no paperwork to sign.
The illegal kidney trade is attractive not only because of the promptness,
but also because of the chance at a living donor. An organ from a cadaver will
most likely be old or damaged, estimated to function for about ten years at most.
A kidney from a living donor can last over twice as long. Once a person’s

Selling Organs for Transplantation
LEWIS BURROWS, M . D .
Abstract
The need for transplant organs has far outstripped the supply of available cadaveric organs. Hundreds
of people on waiting lists, who could be saved by transplantation, die each year. This severe shortage
has justified the extension of transplantation to the use of living donors, but there are still not enough
organs to meet the need. This paper discusses the justification for changing policies in order to encour-
age organ donation. It presents reasons for allowing payments to be made to families that donate
cadaveric organs. It also presents reasons for allowing payments to be made to living donors, and
guidelines for how an ideal policy could be structured.
Key Words: Selling, payment, organs, transplant, financial remuneration, presumed consent, altruism,
ethics.
LIVING DONOR ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION is the
only field of medicine in which two individuals
are intimately involved: the donor and the re-
cipient. It is also the only field of medicine in
which altruistic giving of oneself is the basis of
the medical practice. I have been asked to ad-
dress a very specific aspect of this process, that
is, living organ donation for financial remuner-
ation. No other subject in the transplant experi-
ence is as controversial. Many of those in-
volved in the field—surgeons, physicians, so-
cial scientists, ethicists, and theologians—have
expressed an opinion on this issue.
As a result of impressive gains in this field,
organ recipients now have a significant chance
for both long-term survival and a reasonable
quality of life. These successes have led nearly
80,000 individuals to opt for transplantation as
a form of therapy. Unfortunately, the number of
organs available has lagged far behind the de-
mand. Every year thousands die while waiting
for the gift of life that an organ transplant could
provide.
In the case of cadaveric giving, the family
of the brain-dead person is asked to donate.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied

The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

“ A Woman Who was Forced to offer
her kidney”
This was a case of a woman of 22 years of age who came to donate a kidney for our patient who
was supposedly her brother. She was a good match, but I strongly suspected that she was not related and
was either being coerced or being paid to donate the kidney. We have a policy against doing transplants
from unrelated donors. We make it very clear that we will consider a transplant only if the donor is related
to the recipient and is not doing it for gain. I asked her several times but she said that she was his sister. I
still had my suspicions, so I sent her to a psychiatrist for assessment. She was of subnormal intelligence
and did not understand the procedure.
We could have refused to do the operation here, but they would have gone to some other center
and had it done anyway. So, we carried out the operation. Much later, we learned that she was a paid,
distantly related person who was possibly forced by her family. We are trying to avoid that this becomes a
commercialized process of buying and selling goods in the market.
4. We have pioneered the process of renal transplantation in the country and we have found that
our results are comparable to the advanced centers in the West. A very important cornerstone of our
policy is that we do not accept unrelated donors. Many hospitals in our country allow unrelated
donations. The demand for transplants is far greater than available donors can meet. We do not have a
government-approved cadaver organ harvesting policy. So the patients have to rely on willing relatives
or buy it in the market. It would cost the recipient a big sum of money and then there is the cost of life-
long immunosuppression. Some people can afford this and they create a demand for kidneys from
unrelated willing donors. The donors desperately need the money and the doctors tell them they can
manage with one kidney. Innocent people, underprivileged, unrelated or distantly related, are coerced or
even tricked into giving a kidney. Sometimes they don't even know it. They may not be given any money
or less than what was promised. This is not new; we have had quite a few reports already. The
implications are very serious as have been seen in many developing countries.
We had another case where the donor was clearly a first cousin of the patient and was
apparently willing. We had some vague feeling about her and sent her for psychiatric assessment. They
found that she had subnormal intelligence and had no clue about the issue, the procedure and what it
meant for her. We refused. The patient and his family, and even the donors' parents were upset with us.

22. CONCLUSI
ON
Based on the scenario we know that the doctor is inconsistent in his
decisions as we compare the first and second cases. On the first case,
though the doctor knew about the donor’s subnormal intelligence and had
his suspicions on donor-recipient relationships, he conducted the
operation anyway. However, on the second case, he also knew but tried to
prevent the operation by proving that the donor and recipient are not
related. The doctor hesitated to do the operation on the first case at the
beginning, and considered the health risks and the possibility for them to
do it in another hospital anyway if he rejected. He then chose to do the
renal transplant.
23. In our opinion, he shouldn’t have done the operation. If only the donor knew about
the procedure she undergoes, she might rejected. It is the doctor’s job to explain the
procedure to the donor in a way that the donor can understand. The family of the
donor is also at fault. They forces her to donate her kidney regeardless her opinion.
In Al-Quran, it is written that this cannot be done without mutual consent, and there
is no clear indication that she consented.
