Pancreatitis can cause both systemic and local complications. Systemic complications result from enzymes and inflammatory molecules released by the inflamed pancreas, which can damage blood vessels and cause low blood pressure, fast heart rate, blood clots, and organ failure. Locally, the pancreas can digest itself through autodigestion and necrosis, leading to pseudocysts and abscesses that can compress and infect nearby structures. Inflammation is often due to gallstones or alcohol and can progress to affect the entire body.
