The Palm Jumeirah is an artificial island off the coast of Dubai built in the shape of a palm tree, with a trunk and 17 fronds. It is 5 kilometers by 5 kilometers in size and connected to the mainland by a 300-meter bridge. There is a crescent-shaped breakwater that protects the island from storms, made of sand, fiber, and rocks. The Palm Jumeirah contains over 4,000 residences as well as shopping centers, hotels, and recreation areas, and is a notable man-made structure visible from space.
