BEACH ; AN INTRODUCTION
A beach is a landform along the coast of an ocean,
sea, lake or river. It usually consists of loose
particles, which are often composed of rock, such as
sand, gravel, shingle, pebbles or cobblestones. The
particles comprising a beach are occasionally
biological in origin, such as mollusc shells or
coralline algae. Some beaches have man-made
infrastructure, such as lifeguard posts, changing
rooms and showers. They may also have hospitality
venues {such as resorts, camps etc. nearby.
SECTIONS OF MOST BEACHES
1. BEACH FACE : Sloping section below berm
that is exposed to the swash of the waves.
2. WRACK LINE : The highest reach of the daily
tide where organic debris is deposited by wave
action.
3. BERM : Nearly horizontal portion that stays dry
except during extremely high tides and storms.
4. SWASH ZONE : Is alternatively covered and
exposed by wave run up.

Beach tourism is defined as “it is a
travel for recreational, leisure or
business purposes specifically on
beaches. The tourist who came are
beach bums. They like sea breeze
and salt water. They want a clear
blue vision of the ocean”.
BEACH TOURISM IN INDIA
India is well known for beach tourism.
GOA is the finest beach destination in India
and also the beach which is visited by most
of the tourist. There are about 200 beaches
in India which starts from the east coast to
the west coast. India have only one Drive-
In-Beach. Andaman and Nicobar island ,
Lakshadweep and Pondicherry also have

MARINA BEACH , CHENNAI
Marina Beach is a natural urban beach in the city of
Chennai , India, along the Bay of Bengal, part of the
Indian Ocean. The beach runs from near Fort St. George
in the north to Besant Nagar in the south, a distance of
13 km, making it the longest natural urban beach in the
country and the worlds second longest. The average
width of the beach is 300 m. Bathing and swimming at
Marina Beach is legally prohibited because of the
dangers. It is the most crowded beach in the country and
attracts about 30000 a day during weekdays and 50000
visitors during weekends and holidays. During summer
months , about 15000 to 20000 people visit the beach
MUZHAPPILANGAD BEACH, KANNUR
Muzhappilangad is the only drive-in-beach in the
Asia. One of the longest beach in Kerala. A drive on
the beach is a wonderful experience. During low-
tide you can walk to the Dharmadam Island. Every
year in April, Muzhappilangad is venue for the
beach festival.
Getting there: 104 km away from Karipur
International Airport. Thalassery and Kannur are
nearest cities. Edakkad is the nearest railway head.
RADHANAGAR BEACH , HAVELOCK ISLAND
Radhanagar beach is silky white sand bordered by
emarald green forests and turquoise water, paradise
couldn’t be better than this. Situated on the Andaman and
Nicobar Island, the beautiful beach was rated the best in
Asia by Time Magazine. Go on a leisurely stroll, go
snorkeling to watch coral reefs or simply watch the sun
set on the distant horizon.
Getting there: Ferries are the easiest way to reach
Havelock Island. It takes about four hours to reach. Port
Blair is connected with Chennai and Kolkata by air.
DEVBAGH BEACH , KARWAR
Devbagh is the quintessential island paradise. 3 km off the
coast of Karwar in Karnataka. Just a short drive from
Goa’s border, the island has beautiful backwaters and
jungles. Hop on a boat and witness the dolphins frolic in
the azure waters. If you are the adventurous type, try your
hand at parasailing, snorkeling, speedboat cruises, banana
boat rides, water scooter and kayaking.
Getting there: Nearest rail head is Karwar, 4 km away.
Dabolim in Goa is the nearest airport. Karwar is well
connected by bus to Mangalore, Madagaon and
Bengaluru.
VAGATOR BEACH , GOA
Vagator comes low on the list of scenic beaches and very
low in ranking for happening beaches; however , it stands
out for two reasons. It is less commercialized and bereft
of the hordes that descend on Goa during tourist season.
Vagator is clean and quite. Between two beaches that
straddle the coastline, you can find a quite corner and
spend some time in peace. A part of Vagator known as
Disco Valley, is the best place for trance parties in Goa.
Getting there: Dabolim is the nearest airport, 43 km away.
Thivim is the nearest rail head, 19 km away. Can get bus
from all cities of Goa
KOVALAM BEACH, TRIVANDRUM
A long stretch of white sandy beach running
alongside the Malabar Coast, Kovalam beach has
been Kerala’s most popular destination for years.
Located 16 km from Trivandrum, the beach is a
union of three coves, namely the Hawa Beach,
the Lighthouse beach and the Samudra Beach.
Named after the lighthouse perched atop the
Kurumkal Hill, the Lighthouse beach is the one
most frequented by tourists.
BAGA BEACH , GOA
For those who like long sandy beaches packed with
lively shacks and a party atmosphere, Baga beach in
north Goa is the perfect destination. Water sports,
para sailing, dolphin sightseeing, beach shacks, bars
and clubs. you’ll find them all here! The crowd here
is young and lively, the music loud, and the
atmosphere runs from cheerful to crazy.

MARARI BEACH , ALAPPEY
Little known Marari Beach, not far from Alleppey, is
perfect for those wanting to explore the Kerala backwaters
along with its many beaches. With golden sands and palm
trees, the beach is great for sea surfing, water skiing,
parasailing and deep-sea fishing. The name Marari
originates from 'Mararikulum', a small and sleepy fishing
village on the Arabian Sea coast.
Getting there: Nearest railway station is Kottayam railway
station , 24 km away. 38 km to nearest Cochin
International Airport. We can also reach there by boat and
by road.
PALOLEM BEACH , GOA
Enclosed by a thick forest of coconut palms in south
Goa, Palolem Beach, known for its dolphin-spotting
tours, is arguably the state’s most idyllic beach. Its
southern end tends to be much busier while the
northern stretch is comparatively quieter being
surrounded by a picturesque island that you can
walk out to during low tide.
Getting there: 67 km to the nearest Dabolim Airport.

Bangaram Island Beach in Lakshwadeep is widely

coconut palms make Bangaram a heavenly escapade for
