Dugongs eat about 1 pound of sea grass for every 10 pounds they weigh. When eating sea grass, dugongs must clean it using their nose and flippers by shaking it wildly. Baby dugongs nurse by drinking their mother's milk while the mother swims just below the surface and sometimes grazes at the same time. Dugongs have two tiny nostrils on top of their snout to breathe while much of their body is submerged as they swim or sleep. Over a million years ago, dugongs had front and back legs but have since evolved to live exclusively in the water.
The document summarizes the process of making amate bark paper by hand among Otomi Indians in Puebla, Mexico. The bark from mulberry or fig trees is boiled, soaked, and pounded into pulp that is spread into sheets. Originally a literary movement, Surrealism explored dreams, the unconscious mind, and illogical or irrational juxtapositions to portray multiple levels of reality. Inspired by Freudian psychoanalysis and the chaos of WWI, it used techniques like impossible scales, reversal of natural laws, and dreamlike double images. Major Surrealist artists included Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, and Joan Miro, working primarily in France and Spain in the 1920s-1930s. Dali's Persistence of Memory and Magritte's Ceci n'est pas une pipe are famous examples that employed Surrealist techniques to challenge conventional perceptions of reality.

This document provides a historic overview of the Scott's Addition and Museum District neighborhoods in Richmond, Virginia. Scott's Addition developed as an industrial district reliant on the railroad in the early 1900s. It is now undergoing redevelopment with industrial buildings being converted to residential use. The Museum District began as a home for retired soldiers and grew rapidly from 1895-1940 with a variety of architectural styles including Queen Anne, Classical Revival, and Tudor Revival. Twenty-two of its buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. Both neighborhoods have design overlays to preserve their historic character during redevelopment.

Visual Communication lecture 4 1 rhythm, pattern and repetitionWilfred Dexter Tanedo
This document discusses rhythm, pattern, and repetition in art. It begins by defining each term: repetition refers to repeating objects or shapes, pattern is a combination of repeating elements in a regular arrangement, and rhythm combines repeating elements with variations. The document then examines examples of repetition, pattern, and rhythm in various artworks. It discusses how these elements can be used symbolically, for decoration, and in different rhythmic styles like regular, alternating, flowing, and progressive. Plates or creative works exploring these concepts through geometric shapes, organic forms, thumbprints, and leaf imprints are also proposed.
This document provides context on decolonization and indigenous identities from a global perspective. It defines indigenous peoples according to the UN as culturally distinct groups who find themselves engulfed by settler societies due to forces of empire and conquest, and who have ancestral roots embedded more deeply in the lands they live in than more powerful settler societies. Notable points made include that indigenous peoples number over 370 million globally, that indigenous identity involves factors like self-identification and connection to territory, and that decolonization aims to recentre indigenous life and ways of knowing by challenging colonial institutions and power relations. The document also examines survivance theory and provides examples of how indigenous artists depict survivance in media arts.

The document discusses the concept of diversity and argues that the idea that diversity is one of a country's greatest strengths has become widely accepted without much challenge. It notes that both President Clinton and his wife promoted diversity. However, the document argues that the type of diversity they promoted, based on non-functional differences like race, age, sex, etc., provides little real advantage to a country. It claims the idea that this kind of diversity strengthens a nation is one of the most obviously stupid propositions. The only type of diversity that truly provides benefits is functional diversity within workforces, where different skills are needed.

2. Cultural Context
The Transformation
Long ago on the Pacific Northwest Coast, before the first people came , the
world was in a state of constant flux. This was a time when animal people
walked the earth, swam in the seas and flew in the skies. These animal
people could shift from animal to person and back simply by donning the
skin of one or the other. Earth dwellers only came to be in their present day
forms when the “Transformer changed each into a particular species
according to the person’s activity, attitude or behaviour at the time of the
encounter”
Here on the east coast the mythological “transformer” or “creator” of the
Coast Salish people was the raven (represented symbolically at left).
3. Pacific Northwest Art Explained
abstract representational art with heavy emphasis on faces and heads
faces may be friendly or fierce
Friendly?
Fierce?
4. Animals can be recognized through their teeth, jaws, tails, limbs and other
distinctive characteristics...
Here we see two animals...
What do you think they are?
6. The transformations founds in myth can also be seen in two dimensional design
as forms are abstracted, entwined, rotated and placed in unusual places and often
constrained spaces.
Haida Dogfish, Bill Reid
7. Purpose
1. To make the supernatural world visible and present.
Northwest coast art is intended to affect the viewer strongly. The artist is
communicating about power (their own or their chiefly employer’s); they are
also communicating about power itself. To the extent that the artist can strike
the viewer, power is transferred.
affecting presence = supernatural power = social power
2. To make the social system visible - art provided the status symbols of the social
system.
8. Apprenticeship & Learning the Basics
Traditional Northwest Coast art is structured upon and within a certain set of
principles governing:
Design
Composition
Colour
9. South Coast Art Style
Area in green at left exhibited this style, here :)
Society was not clan based
Limited amount of art production
basis of art usually religious
Meaning and significance of symbolic images therefore
often kept secret
Usually made of simple standard units such as
ovals(ovoids), circles, U shapes (solid or split) and
negative crescents, trigons, slits and T forms
heads exaggerated in size and rarely shown in profile - often
circular, earless, and hairless
10. Ovoids
Really oval like in appearance
Convex bottoms and bilaterally
symmetrical
Ovals represent joints in
appendages, tails, wings, eyes,
heads and palms
Most have floating inner units
(positive and negative spaces)
11. U Shapes
Short form representing i.e. fish scales
Long forms representing i.e. wings
Commonly had curved open slits and rounded
ends
U shapes could represent feathers, fins, flukes,
tails, fingers, gills, scales and ears.
13. Cultural Appropriation versus Cultural Appreciation
● Using someone else’s cultural symbols to
satisfy a personal need for self expression is an
exercise in privilege
● a lack of respect for the sacred history of
another culture without having knowledge of its
significance.
● a long history of Colonization has placed
Western Anglo culture in the dominant position
with respect to other cultures. Therefore, the
use of the traditions, symbols, and codes of
these cultures by western Anglo communities
always includes the risk of oppression.
● What is wrong with this picture?
● What are we doing today in this workshop?
17. Your Turn!
Draw your personal totem animal in the Pacific Northwest First Nations style.
Use at least an 18” by 24” piece of drawing paper.
Trace the true outline of your animal lightly on your paper
Sketch in the formline outer contours of your animal
Use the shapes as illustrated for you on the handout to construct a symbolic representation of your
animal (see Kim’s book for details on eyes, flippers, legs, etc. if you get stuck)
Choose a colour scheme and plan how you are going to colour your shapes by marking each shape
lightly with your pencil. Do not mark the white.
Use the markers provided to colour your piece
