Beyond the visual: The Body in Contemporary ArtDeborahJ
When we think of the Body in Contemporary Art we could consider a number of different and relevant aspects. For instance, the body - the human form - is central in art, traditionally the body was often used to explore allegory, beauty and sexuality and so on. But in the twentieth century there was a significant shift in both how the body was perceived, and how it was used to create art across a range of media, from painting and sculpture to installation, photography, video art, performance and participatory art. By considering the different roles played by the body in art, we can identify that there has been a shift from being the subject, for example, in a portraiture, to becoming an active presence in live and participatory events. Alongside this there has also been a significant transformation of the role of the audience, broadly speaking, from passive viewer to active participant.

Due thursday 18th
I have selected the two works of art for you. You can choose 3 articles, use the articles from the journal you are doing now. The works of art I have choosed are attached. Talk about it as the instructions ask you to and reflect on it with 3 readings that you think are appropriate, the readings are the same articles for the journals. You can use any 3 from all the days (june 2, 3, etc). i'm gonna write things i observe in the paper so you include them, but please add as much of your own observations as well and research you find. Please make sure to answer all the instructions she asks for in the prompt or she wont give me an A if I miss anything. THANK YOU!!! :)
1. border fence. I grew up in the border city of Mexicali, Baja california. and I crossed the border every day until 1 was 17 and moved to san diego. I studied in the american town across the border, calexico, so I could learn english. fortunately for me, I was born in san diego so crossing the border was never an issue for me. i never had to deal with visas, permits, etc. As i grew older i learned about the many lives that are affected by this man-made division that separates two countries. I would see the deported people from mexico, as well as from south america ask for money to the cars waiting in the border line, most of them wash cars for money. In this photograph I see the men dressed exactly like all the laborers dress. It is very realistic. And the fence has holes in it. The men are standing in the dirt looking over through peep holes, trying to get a glimpse of the dreamed of
Estados Unidos.
I think the artist purposely takes the photograph at an angle to emphasize the length of the fence to shed light on the challenge it poses to people trying to cross over. The fact that the men are looking over tells me that they have hope, otherwise I think they would be trying to earn a living in their present country. I think the artist chose to keep the picture in black and white, because the real life situation he is showing the world is not a happy one. It looks more serious that way.
2. Seated woman:
This work reminds me of the art works we saw in class with the many mothers, where they all all appeared fatigued. It was a realistic portrayal of motherhood, more than the idealized ones we are used to. In this work, the women are seated. it looks to me like they are resting from a busy day. Their hair is up and they do not seem to be dressed up or glamourous in any way. Their hairs are up and the clothing they are wearing is very simple, like what a laborer would wear. They are also seating on the ground, which is where laborers would seat in a particular country like Mexico. It is not a custom for middle or high class people to sit on the floor. the woman in the background has what looks to me like a woven basket next to her leg, so she could have been doing manual labor there on the floor, or who knows; its just an observation. both women have their hands on.

The I rony of Being American
. Michi Itami
I am an artist of Japanese American heritage (third generation) who expe-
rienced internment, as did many Japanese-Americans during World War II,
and who teaches at the City College of New York ofthe City University of
New York, perhaps the most culturally diverse university in the United States.
The makeup of the student body of the City College of New York incorpo-
rates fifty-two language groups, and many of the students are the first col-
lege-graduates-to-be in their respective families. The experience of teaching
there is incredibly enriching, and I appreciate what I am learning from my
students at the same time that I am teaching them printmaking and art. I
am director of the Graduate Studio Program as well.
I feel obliged to first tell you about my experiences and evolution as an
artist. In the past, my own work had been largely abstract. The tone and
ambience of the work was largely Japanese. I say this because the Japanese
in the past have eschewed direct representations of nature and usually have
represented their visions of nature in stylized and abstracted ways. A mov-
ing phenomenon, such as a wave in the ocean existing in time and in con-
stant motion, is better represented in abstract form.
In 1989, I got involved with computers and this has influenced the cur-
rent direction in my artwork. I began to realize that one could make art
from anything. The artist is no longer curtailed by one's drawing or repre-
sentational skills. In addition, above all else, the issue of what is relevant
to you became most important. My father left me a treasure trove of photo-
graphs from his past and his family. I had used them before in photo-etchings,
but the size and scope was limited. I felt compelled to tell his story visually.
In fact, when the government informed me that I was to receive a "redress"
payment for being interned during World War II, I was at first quite am-
bivalent and upset. But when I thought of making a piece about my father
and about our being interned at Manzanar, one of the largest internment
camps located on wasteland near Bishop, California, I accepted the money
with the intention of making these pieces. I bought a high-end computer

with part of the money and used it to create art related to the experience.
In one of the pieces, I placed the letter from President George Bush that
accompanied the redress payment next to the piece and called it The Irony
of Being American (Figure 3.1).
The Irony, as it is nicknamed, includes three views of my father-one at
sixteen years of age in Japanese dress, one at twenty-three in a double-
breasted suit, and one at twenty-seven in his U.S. Army uniform-superim-
posed transparently over the background of Manzanar. The photograph of
Manzanar was taken by Ansel ...

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2. ABOUT:
• In this presentation I will be focusing
on a fiberglass sculpture called Border
Crossing by Mexican American, Luis
Jiminez.
• I captured this picture when I went to
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston on
August 7th, 2023.
3. DESCRIPTION:
• What is the written description on the label or in the program about the
event?
In the label provided it informed us the Artist, Luis Jimenez, who was “a leading
artist of the Chicano Movement, responded to Pop Art and the political climate of
the 1960s and 1970s by using fiberglass.”
• What is the tittle and who is the artis?
The artist is Mexican American, Luis Jimenez and the piece of art’s name is Border
Crossing (Cruzando el Rio Bravo),1989.
4. • When and where was the work created?
This sculpture was made when Luis Jimenez was living in El Paso, TX in 1989.
• Describe the elements of the work?
- Color in art: What I noticed was there wasn’t bright colors, it was more of dark tones. It sets the
mood of the sculpture. The lady’s sweater is dark pink which is the most color I saw. Other than
that, it was neutral colors. It was shiny and glossy.
- Value in art: There is light and dark aspects of the art.
- Line in art: There is a lot of lines as it gives movement and depth to the sculpture. The lines make
it realistic.
- Shape in art: It’s mostly vertical as it’s a man carrying a women with kid. Looks like a straight
vertical line.
- Form in art: It’s 3D shape. Has the forms of what a human is.
- Texture in art: The texture is smooth, tough, and filled.
- Space in art: It’s filled with space. It doesn’t contain no empty space.
5. Describe the technical qualities of the work.
- It is considered a low-brow commercial medium.
- Materials used was fiberglass with urethane finish.
- The method used was crafting and sculpturing.
Describe the subject matter. What is it about?
Border Crossing art piece is a familiar image as we have a seen people crossing the
border from the medias. Border Crossing is a man carrying a women and kid on his
shoulders. Luis Jimenez did this to portray a struggle and real-life event of families or
individuals crossing the border from Mexico to The United States for better opportunity.
The man is protecting the wife and kid from getting wet.
6. ANALYSIS:
• How is the work constructed or planned?
Luis is an artist who gets inspired by real life challenges as a Mexican American. He
got inspired by the story of is grandfather when he crossed the border for better
opportunities. He wanted dark colors and tones to compliment the life challenges
going on. Crossing the border is not seen as happy but instead as challenging and
heartbreaking thinking of days walking away from their country to get a better life.
He created this sculpture with a realistic appearance like the story behind it.
7. Identify some of the similarities throughout the work.
If you focus in the sculpture, you notice a repetition of lines starting from ground to
head. The feet have vertical lines giving the motion of walking but also struggling as
it’s a man carrying the wife and kid. Theres is lines throughout their clothing making
it realistic as clothes do have wrinkles and assuming the man is wet. The lines in their
faces express the feeling.
Identify some of the points of emphasis in the work.
Like mentioned before, the movement speaks for itself. The sculpture is made as if it
were walking. Every detail counts. This figure represents immigrants struggling to get
a better life. As a Mexican American, I see such familiar pictures and scenes when it
comes to someone crossing the border.
8. • If the work has subjects or characters, what are the
relationships between or among them?
The work has three characters including a man, a
woman (wife), and a newborn (child), all three
Mexicans. They are a family crossing the border for a
better life in The United States.
9. INTERPRETATION:
• Describe the expressive qualities you find in the work. What
expressive language would you use to describe the qualities?
Border Crossing sculpture expresses struggle, sadness but it also gives emotion of
lucha which means fight for. The family is doing a sacrifice which makes them
strong and brave moving to a country they don’t know. You can sense that emotion
through the work. Many families want the best for their children. I find it
meaningful to me because my parents came here, leaving their family behind to be
able to create a better life for my siblings and I. It is something I look up to on my
parents. It expresses happiness also, because they created a life here and now, they
can enjoy that being because they became residents.
10. Does the work remind you of other things you have experienced?
I find it meaningful to me because my parents came here, leaving their family behind
to be able to create a better life for my siblings and me. It is something I look up to
on my parents. It expresses happiness also, because they created a life here and now,
they can enjoy that being because they became residents.
How does the work relate to other ideas or events in the world and/or
in your other studies?
I have learned some aspects of Mexican Americans fighting for their rights through
History 1 & II. In way it’s related to African Americans fighting for their rights. The
Chicano movement once joined Martin Luther King because they were all fighting for
voting rights etc.
11.
12. EVALUATION:
• What qualities of the work make you feel it is a success or failure?
I believe Border Crossing by Luis Jimenez was a success. The art is piece is taller
than human size and show cased in the museum where everyone can see it. You
can tell the story and emotion behind it by just observing it. That sculpture is one
of his most successful ones.
13. • Compare it with similar works that you think are successful.
I took this picture of this art piece called, “Juanito va a la ciudad”
by Argentinean, Antonio Berni. In the description provided it
explains that Juanito is walking through piles of trash on his way
to the modern city. He wants to leave the environment he
currently lives at somewhat similar of “Border Crossing”.
14. • How original is the work? Why do you feel this work is original or
not original?
I think the work is original because I feel like I haven’t seen such art like the one
presented. I hadn’t seen a fiberglass sculpture like Border Crossing. It’s huge so it
would be something hard to miss. I think the story can be similar to other artist’s
work, as it is a life struggle that has been happening for decades. So, I don’t doubt
the border crossing topic hasn’t inspired others.
