• Founder - Lorrin Thurston
• Headquarters were moved from
Hawaii to San Francisco in 1953
• First Asian office was established in
Manila, the Philippines in 1976.
• A membership association acting as a
catalyst for the responsible
development of the Asia Pacific travel
and tourism industry.

• PATA has 4 types of membership:

• The membership of PATA is open to all professional organizations such as airlines, steamship
lines, travel agencies, tour operators, hoteliers, government, tourism professional organizations,
advertising agencies, and public relations agencies, etc.
• PATA has 95 government state and city tourism bodies, 25 international airlines and airports, 108
hospitality organizations, 72 educational institutions, and hundreds of travel industry companies
in the Asia Pacific and beyond.
7. ROLES OF P.A.T.A
• Incorporated to develop, promote, and facilitate travel to
areas within the Pacific RIM as a non-profit, voluntary,
and non-political corporation.
• Plays crucial role in order to promote travel and tourism
to and within the Pacific region.
• Eminent participation in research studies on tourism.
• Being a largest non-profit organization in tourism
sector, it conducts marketing programs extensively.
• Serves as a central source, for tourists destinations and
products together with training and educational
programs for human resource development.
8. FUNCTIONS OF P.A.T.A
• Promotes and develops tourism in the Pacific region.
• Sponsors and organizes conferences of its members with the objectives of reviewing
the progress, exchanging ideas and planning for future programs
• Organizes training and development programs for members.
• Promotes ethical practices.
• Focuses on destination development.
• Stimulates and develop public-private sector partnerships.
• Improves international understanding and international corporation.
• Publishes material relating the tourism industry.
• Provides marketing research and statics.
• Provides valuable insights, forecasts, and analysis which helps members to make
better business decisions.
