Leonardo da Vinci lived from 1452 to 1519 during the Renaissance period. He was an Italian polymath whose areas of expertise included painting, sculpting, architecture, music, mathematics, engineering, invention, anatomy, geology, cartography, botany and writing. Some of his most famous works include the Mona Lisa painting and detailed anatomical drawings. Through dissecting human corpses, Leonardo made many breakthrough discoveries in human anatomy that were well ahead of the medical knowledge of his time. However, his anatomical drawings were not widely seen until centuries later because he instructed his student to keep them hidden after his death.
