Strategic Reading Symbols Active Reading Strategies First Reading Symbols ? ! + “Fix-up” Strategies Symbols Re – reading RR / rr Visualizing V Making Connections I don’t understand. / I need to read on. / I need more information. Wow! Really? I’m impressed! I know about this. / Yes, that’s right. / I agree. That’s new information. I didn’t know that. How / When to use them I should read the text again; to improve my understanding of it. I am able to form a mental picture of what I have just read. I have experienced this. (text to self) I have read about this. (text to text) I have watched a movie / documentary on this. (text to world). I can gather contextual clues from within the text to aid me in my understanding of it. Gathering Contextual Clues Infer How / When to use them I The contextual clues that I have gathered have led me to form a conclusion / form an opinion. Empathize I am able to understand the plight / thoughts / feelings of the characters / author. Research I need to use a dictionary / conduct further research / use other resources to find out more about it.
  • 10. Key Programmes : ENGLISH Writing Skills • Writing Skills - Use writing strategies to scaffold pupils’ writing (SPACE) - Write a story based on a picture or situation • STELLAR Units with Thematic Cycles - 3 or 4 week cycle for various themes (e.g Fire, Crime etc)
  • 11. Narrative Writing Structure Grab the reader’s attention Setting Questions are raised & curiosity is aroused. Description of Setting Elaborate with a snapshot of the character/object setting. It lets the reader experience he’s there. Build Suspense Purpose What is the story about? Give hints of what is going to happen. Make the reader wonder & worry along with the main character. The Main Event Actions Part by part mix of action, description and dialogue, and the main character’s thoughts and feelings. Action leading to conclusion Final action that closes the story. 1) Action 2) Dialogue 3) Questions 4) Thoughts/Feelings 5) Sound Effects Answer questions about story-critical character/object/setting. Show what feelings look, sound, and feel like. Don’t simply ‘tell’. 1) Character asking QUESTIONS. 2) Using ‘It’ 3) The Magic-of-Three Blend together the following: Action Dialogue Description The main character’s thoughts/feelings A close to the Main Event. Conclusion Extended Ending: Memories, hopes, decisions Emotions Include these: A memory of the main event The main character’s feelings The main character’s hopes/wishes A decision/defining action
