Oyster mushrooms are a type of edible fungi that grow in clusters on the
trunks of deciduous trees. They have a delicate, slightly sweet flavour and a
firm texture, making them a popular ingredient in many cuisines around the
world. Oyster mushrooms are also known for their nutritional benefits, as they
are low in calories, high in protein and fibre, and contain various vitamins and
minerals.
They are easy to cultivate and can be grown both indoors and outdoors,

All About Oyster Mushrooms
Oyster mushrooms (Pleurites spp.) are a popular edible fungus known for their
distinct shape and flavor. Oyster mushrooms have the following salient
features:
● Oyster mushrooms are typically grown on substrates like straw,

● They have a mellow, nutty flavour and a smooth, delicate
texture.
● White, grey, and pink oyster mushrooms are just a few of the

● Oyster mushrooms are known for their medicinal properties, and
are used in traditional Chinese medicine to boost the immune
system and reduce inflammation.
● They are also a popular ingredient in many vegetarian and vegan
dishes, as they can be used as a meat substitute in recipes like
burgers and stir-fries.
● You may roast, grill, sauté, or use oyster mushrooms in soups
and stews. They’re very simple to prepare.

Oyster Mushroom Identification
A member of the Pleurotus genus, oyster mushrooms are edible fungi. They
are named after their oyster-shaped cap, which can grow up to 10-25 cm
wide. Here are some points to help identify oyster mushrooms:
Cap
The cap is typically broad, flat, and shell-shaped, resembling an oyster, with a
smooth or slightly wrinkled surface. It can range in color from white, beige,
gray, to pale yellow.
Gills
The oyster mushroom has decurrent gills, which imply they run down the
stem. They are typically white, cream, or pale yellow and are crowded
together.
Stem
The stem of the oyster mushroom is typically short and off-center, and it can
be tough and fibrous. The color of the stem ranges from white to a light brown.
Spores
The spores of the oyster mushroom are cylindrical or oblong-shaped and can
range in color from white to pale lilac.
Habitat
Oyster mushrooms grow on dead or dying trees, stumps, logs, and sometimes
on fallen branches. They can also be cultivated on straw or sawdust.
Taste
Oyster mushrooms have a mild, nutty flavour and a sensitive, delicate texture.
Lookalikes
Some other mushrooms may resemble oyster mushrooms, so it’s important to
properly identify them. Some of these lookalikes include false oyster
mushrooms, angel wings, and the poisonous jack-o’-lantern mushroom.
Smell
Oyster mushrooms have a mild, earthy smell that can be slightly sweet or
nutty.
Oyster Mushrooms Recipe
Here is a simple recipe for oyster mushrooms:
1. Clean the oyster mushrooms by gently wiping them with a damp
cloth. Cut off the stems and separate the caps into bite-sized
pieces.
2. Garlic and onions are sautéed in oil in a hot skillet until aromatic.
3. Oyster mushrooms should be added and cooked for 5–7
minutes, or until crispy and golden brown.
4. Add salt, pepper, and any additional herbs or spices to taste.
5. Serve hot as a side dish or add them to your favorite recipes,
such as stir-fries, soups, or pasta dishes. Enjoy!
