Faced with the dual threats of rising operating costs and declining revenues, network service providers are increasingly turning to network functions virtualization (NFV) to help them keep up with constantly changing market conditions.
In a virtualized Telco environment, service providers can deploy and deliver new network functions, services and capacity on demand—reducing normal rollout time from months and weeks to just hours.
Leveraging the principles of cloud computing, network service providers can deliver a level of responsiveness never before available, easily scaling capacity up or down to meet the evolving needs of their subscribers.
The result is a highly agile system that allows new revenue-generating services to be quickly developed, exhaustively tested and selectively rolled out to targeted groups in a fraction of the time and at a much lower cost than previously thought possible.
In this session, the speaker will present how the solution from Juniper networks look like and how it can be deployed by service provider to improve their agility in delivering services to their customers.

Advancing LTE architecture with NFV and SDNAlberto Diez
My presentation at LTE MENA 2015 in Dubai. It was the last one before some 5G discussions and after some good introductions to the NFV/SDN topics from the mobile operator perspective so I decided to do a remake of my NFV/SDN Orchestration presentation to address the maybe unwanted effects that NFV and SDN could have in the LTE network architecture. At the end I had to cut a couple of slides because I only had 20 minutes. Here is complete.
The document proposes a multistage optimization framework called OCDO that provides scalable security provisioning in SDN-based cloud environments. OCDO uses a decomposition technique that leverages network topology characteristics to allow concurrent optimization. It also uses a segmentation technique to distribute security function availability among network nodes based on semantics. The framework aims to optimize both computing and networking resources simultaneously while ensuring security function precedence requirements and proper handling of stateful functions. Evaluation results show OCDO achieves higher efficiency and can scale to large data center topologies.

SDN & NFV: Driving Additional Value into Managed ServicesTBI Inc.
From offering seamless scalability to providing best-in-class security, SDN and NFV are driving value into managed services. Discover how these technologies combine to build a simple, more agile infrastructure at a significantly lower cost. Offer NFV, SDN, and other products from best-of-breed provider NTT through TBI.
The document discusses the need for abstractions in networking to simplify network control and management. It argues that networking currently lacks fundamental abstractions, unlike other fields like programming. Three key abstractions are needed: 1) a flexible forwarding model, 2) a state distribution abstraction through a global network view, and 3) separating detailed configuration. These abstractions form the basis of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and help address its scalability and evolvability. A Network Operating System (NOS) is also proposed to manage the distributed state and communicate with forwarding elements.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) allows users to make voice calls using an internet connection rather than a regular phone line. It works by encoding voice input and transmitting it as data packets over the internet. VoIP provides several benefits including lower costs, portability through mobile apps, and additional features like video calling. However, it also has some disadvantages like potential quality issues when making international calls and reliance on an internet connection to place calls.

Delivering Network Innovation with SDN - Tom Nadeau scoopnewsgroup
Networks have not adapted to increasing demands over the last 20 years. Software-defined networking (SDN) uses open standards and open source software to address this issue. SDN allows for network-wide operation and independent innovation through logical centralization, open control protocols, and the disaggregation of hardware and software. Key open source SDN projects include Open vSwitch, OpenDaylight, and OpenStack. OpenDaylight in particular is discussed as having the potential to become a common industry-supported SDN platform due to its large community and integration with solutions from other vendors.

The ESP uses software-defined networking and network functions virtualization approaches to dynamically chain together virtual network functions as needed to provide agile services. This improves time to market, reduces costs, and enables new revenue opportunities for service providers.
This document provides an overview and updates on SDN technologies including OpenFlow and ONF. The key points discussed include:
1) A survey that found the leading SDN deployments use OpenFlow controller-based approaches, with overlay-based SDN and multiple protocol controllers also common.
2) Updates on ONF activities including comments on OpFlex, collaboration with ETSI on NFV support, and upcoming OpenFlow specifications and extensions.
3) Use cases for SDN/NFV including service chaining, load balancing, and enhancing disaster response for a telecom network. Areas of focus for evolving OpenFlow standards are also outlined.

“…We have a number of packet analysis tools and we were using Gigamon to gather
packets, but when you want to gather packets from everywhere that price point gets too
high…
So we decided to go with a white box solution and Big Tap from Big Switch to gather
packets and forward them to the tools as needed. We’re using software-defined
networking first in non-production, in our monitoring space, and evaluating where we want
to go next. It’s done well for us. We used it through our first peak of tax year 2014, which
was in early February…
