Transforming REDD+ lessons learned and way forward

Project Tiger and Project Gir Lion are wildlife conservation programs in India that focus on single species and their habitats. Project Tiger, started in 1973, aims to protect tigers and increase their population in tiger reserves. It helped increase tigers from 1,200 to 3,500 but the population later dropped to 1,411. Project Gir Lion, started in 1965, focuses on the last wild population of Asiatic lions in Gir Forest. It has increased lions from 285 to over 500. Background/Question/Methods
Environmental problems are by definition social problems and so it follows that progress towards a future that is sustainable for both the natural world and the people that rely on it requires close collaboration between ecologists and social scientists. It also requires that research problems and methods be framed jointly with those able to implement sustainability actions. Understanding what factors promote successful collaborations among such teams is an active area of research that has only recently been formalized as “the science of team science”. In 2011, the U.S. National Science Foundation funded a national center – the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) – to build capacity to undertake inter- and transdisciplinary research and accelerate team progress in solving critical socio-ecological problems.
Results/Conclusions
This talk will describe: 1) the application of theory and ideas used to design the programs and operational strategy of the center; and 2) mechanisms for evaluating and adapting center processes; and 3) early outcomes from teams of researchers. The project would involve designing requirements, developing a prototype, implementing the final system, and closing out deliverables. Key activities included methodology development, GUI design, and implementation. The total estimated cost was 91,825 euros. The project aimed to provide a cost-effective solution for measuring and monitoring Nepal's forest carbon stock.

A group of researchers from the US, Canada and the EU has reviewed ecosystem based management in the North Atlantic. The management of marine ecosystems is transitioning towards implementation of of ecosystem-based management, which offers a more systematic and integrated approach compared with conventional management. Ecosystem Based Management is informed by science and includes key elements such as connections and linkages between and within ecosystems, as well as with social and economic systems. We found a common understanding of concepts, sufficient mandates for action and sufficient tools for most components of EBM. So why is implemention so slow? This is explored and five key messages are delivered: • Ecosystem Based Management enables new benefits and opportunities; make the business case • Yes, we can!; adequate mandates and effective tools exist for Ecosystem Based Management • Integration of human dimensions is essential for Ecosystem Based Managment; diversify the conversation • Stakeholders don’t see their stake (in Ecosystem Based Management); engage and target ocean literacy to professionals • A sustainable future requires a sustained investment in Ecosystem Based Management; commitment is key
How is REDD+ unfolding on the ground?
This presentation is a compilation of four that were given on 30 November 2011 at an official UNFCCC COP17 side-event organised by CIFOR: 'How is REDD+ unfolding on the ground?'. The event discussed early insights on the capability of REDD+ projects to deliver on their goal of sequestering forest carbon while providing a range of co-benefits. The information presented draws mainly on findings of CIFOR's Global Comparative Study on REDD+, and covers the status and challenges of REDD+ projects on the ground;
challenges encountered in establishing REDD+ in Africa;
the policy and economic context in which REDD+ projects is unfolding; and
the status of monitoring, reporting and verification in setting up REDD+.
