Nonprofits have become one of the top users of social media since joining the platforms. However, many choose to pay hundreds, if not thousands for seminars that take away from the donors and the causes they support.
In an industry that thrives on relationships and relationship building, social media marketing is the perfect tool for nonprofit organizations to engage with donors, volunteers, and supporters.
How can social media help your nonprofit achieve its goals? According to a recent study, the top nonprofit communication goals for 2014 are:
Acquiring new donors
Engaging the community
General brand awareness
Retaining current donors
How are you achieving these goals? This informative guide will introduce nonprofits to the importance and best practices in social media to build relationships, reach out to the community, and increase brand awareness for your nonprofit.

14. Facebook: The most popular social network
Twitter: a microblog to report news
Instagram: Images with meaning and quality
Google+ for a better positioning for products
Filckr: an image is worth a 100 words
LinkedIn: the labour social network

15. Take care of your profiles on social networks, they
provide more information than you think.
Control the content you post on social networks
Posting too much personal information about
yourself or others on social media is risky.
Apply the basic principle, be forewarned of the
unknown.
Control the geo-location of your profiles and
content on social networks.
Always check your privacy settings
Respect must be a priority
As in life, take care and protect relationships on the
internet
Self-protection/preservation

Digital Identity:
Overview of Communicating Nutrition & Social Media Best Practices in Nigeria by Remmy NWEKE
16. We must think about the information we have on
our fingers and think of the implication we share
with different cadres of people including children,
unfortunately there are some people waiting to
take negative advantage of these for personal
aggrandisement.
So, sometimes, we are not paying attention to what
we post. Its VIP to also, even after posting a
comment or note to take a second look at it so if
there is need to edit and delete within a given time
frame, one can easily do that.
Use of location is good at times, but often it goes to
show we are not at home and paves the way for
thieves or robbers to attack our homes.

Mindful of Abuse …
Overview of Communicating Nutrition & Social Media Best Practices in Nigeria by Remmy NWEKE
17. Use social media only to criticise
Add unknown profiles
Post provocative photos
The daily bombardment
Post anything to groups
Post indirect
Any excuse for a "like"
Always be comparing
Spy-Stalkers and Pedophiles
Get hooked on the bottom 'update’
So, we have to be very careful, especially on the photos

Notable Bad Practices in Social Media …
Overview of Communicating Nutrition & Social Media Best Practices in Nigeria by Remmy NWEKE
18. You need not create accounts on all social media in the
world since you may not likely going to be active on all of
them.
Many work places block the use of social media during
work hours to avoid people becoming nuisances at work
places, etc.
You should avoid posting same thing on Twitter, Facebook
etc when you are not a news media recognised for such
purpose its not good enough and does not make you smart

19. The world is in the race for social CHANGE without even
realising it, but we need to know and note that social media
must be used in our favour not against us.
Privacy is a common word but should not be taken lightly.
Social Media is good for presentation of products and corporates
could accept as many as possible but privately not ideal because
it could hunt you later.
Just have in mind that the Internet which is the bases for all
social and new media communication is not private and very
often does not forget .
Be the change you want by communicating appropriately!
