1) Nuclear power provides electricity without fossil fuels or emissions, but new nuclear plants have high upfront capital costs that may not be offset without carbon credits.
2) Only a few new nuclear reactor designs are currently under construction worldwide, and the winning commercial designs will be determined over the next decade as more units are built and experience is gained.
3) Public opinion on nuclear power varies globally, with some countries strongly supporting it for its carbon-free energy and energy independence, while others remain opposed or concerned over costs and waste disposal.
Dr. Keith Lovegrove unveiled the ANU's new solar thermal dish in September at the SolarPACES international solar thermal conference in Berlin to much acclaim. This will be the first time it will be presented in Melbourne.
It is the world's biggest solar dish that comes with a mass production system that can build one dish a day. The dish has the highest optical efficiency of any commercial solar technology in the world and a field of 500 produces 100MW electrical power. ANU's dishes can be used on undulating ground, which is difficult for current solar thermal systems that use mirror fields or troughs.
Dr. Keith Lovegrove will also talk about replacing all of Australia's energy needs with this solar technology used in conjunction with thermal salt storage.
Dr. Keith Lovegrove is a senior lecturer in Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the Australian National University (ANU). He heads the ANU Solar Thermal Group which works on a range of projects involving high and low temperature thermal conversion of solar energy. This includes looking at dish and trough concentrators and thermochemical energy storage. He is widely published in scientific journals and has advised the Australian Government on CSP . Dr Lovegrove and his team are at the forefront of International research into concentrated solar power.
This document outlines a plan for engaging the public and stakeholders on the topic of nuclear energy. It begins with an introduction to Gemaker, a communications company. It then discusses nuclear energy's current position and arguments in its favor from an MIT professor. The bulk of the document provides a detailed plan for public engagement, including polls and research, public information sessions, addressing concerns, and providing facts to dispel myths. It gives an example of a public consultation in the UK and concludes with a vision for nuclear energy being a reliable, low-carbon source in the future.

ARENA is a $2.5 billion Australian government agency established in 2012 to improve the competitiveness of renewable energy technologies and increase renewable energy supply in Australia. It provides funding across the innovation chain from research to commercial deployment. Key priorities include integrating renewables into grids including storage, renewables in remote areas, and off-grid solutions. Notable projects ARENA has funded include several large solar farms, concentrating solar thermal research, an online energy storage testing platform, and renewable energy projects for remote communities and industry.
Over the past 15 years, Australia’s renewable energy market has continued to attract massive interest from
Developers, Contractors, manufacturers, governments and local and international investors. This reflects global
energy trends driven by factors such as a push for diversification of energy sources and asset classes,
government incentives for clean energy technology developments and, importantly, the decreasing cost of
electricity from renewable energy sources.
The renewable energy industry in Australia is well-established and mature for some technologies (eg wind,
rooftop solar PV), developing in others (eg utility scale solar PV, solar thermal/CSP and hybrid solar) and at
commercialisation stage in others (eg geothermal, wave).
At this time of increasing market interest and development, it is relevant to consider key issues and market
trends in the construction, operation and regulatory aspects of projects, and critical bankability considerations
relating to each of these issues. While this paper focuses on issues that are of most interest to project Sponsors
and Lenders, many of these considerations are equally relevant to Contractors. This paper considers these
issues in the context of utility scale solar and wind projects in Australia.
1. Co-locating wind and solar power generation provides advantages from sharing infrastructure and grid connections, as well as complementary electricity generation profiles that improve transmission asset utilization.
2. Goldwind has developed wind and solar hybrid projects in Australia, like the 165.5MW Gullen Range wind farm combined with a planned 10-12MW solar farm, and the 175MW White Rock wind farm combined with 20MW solar, both connecting to high voltage transmission systems.
3. The generation profiles from wind and solar are complementary, with wind producing more in winter and solar in summer, and their outputs varying across daytime hours, allowing more consistent combined output without exceeding transmission limits.

CAKE: Sharing Slices of Confidential Data on BlockchainClaudio Di Ciccio
Presented at the CAiSE 2024 Forum, Intelligent Information Systems, June 6th, Limassol, Cyprus.
Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
