Enterprises can survive digital disruption as well as grow revenue, improve profitability and increase market valuation — if they start rethinking what they do.
Digital transformation. It’s the use of technology to create a better customer experience, improve products and services, and increase the effectiveness of business operations. But it really means what your enterprise must do to adapt and thrive.
Today’s smaller, emerging companies are born digital. They can — and do — change quickly to answer consumer demand or a competitive offering. Larger, mature enterprises must start with a shift in strategy, because all industries will be changed or already have been changed by digital transformation. Many, like news media and publishers, music, video and retail have been or significantly disrupted. Up next: financial services, healthcare manufacturing, insurance, legal, education, utilities and energy. The good news? No industry has been or will be completely upended.
The first step is to recognize that disruption does not have to be a mass-extinction event. Enterprises can survive as well as grow revenue, improve profitability and increase market valuation. Here’s how to start rethinking what you do.

What is Digital transformation?
Far too often digital transformation is confused with Digitalization or with Digitization with a key focus on technologies or platform. But Digital transformation is not about technologies: it's about transforming the whole prganisation through a system thinking approach and it's about rethinking operational models, business models, processes, and policies, taking people, both employees and customers at the core of the process.
Because the goal of any digital transformation is to increase value creation for the business through digitally enhanced processes that increase internal efficiency and overall customer and employee satisfaction.
Digital transformation is en emergent need in today's post-industrial society: we moved fast from an industrial to a post-industrial era, however operational models and management practices haven't evolved fast enough.
For this reason, many organisations prefer to think of Digital transformation as the adoption of digital technologies on the top of mainly inefficient and obsolete operational models, rather than facing a true in depth transformation that begins with understanding the current culture, the customers, and the overall business.
These slides, were presented to students from IIM (india) at ESPC London on July 27th 2017 with the goal to provide tomorrow's digital leaders a broad vision of what is digital transformation by looking at what and the reasons why change is happening in the business world, define Digital transformation and its dimensions through the lenses of an Experience economy and a post-industrial era. The presentation also presents the Competing Value Framework as a key tool to start understanding organsation's culture and define a digital transformation roadmap and strategy.

In a world rocked by the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), the mobile revolution, Digital Transformation, and COVID-19, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) remains an essential technology system for manufacturers. However, a SCADA system that was “good enough” 10 or 15 years ago will not be adequate in today’s environment. Before adopting or upgrading to a new SCADA system, you must be certain that it offers the power and flexibility your organization needs to adapt to these unfolding changes.

Modern data processing environments resemble factory lines, transforming raw data to valuable data products. The lean principles that have successfully transformed manufacturing are equally applicable to data processing, and are well aligned with the new trend known as DataOps. In this presentation, we will explain how applying lean and DataOps principles can be implemented as technical data processing solutions and processes in order to eliminate waste and improve data innovation speed. We will go through how to eliminate the following types of waste in data processing systems:
* Cognitive waste - unclear source of truth, dependency sprawl, duplication, ambiguity.
* Operational waste - overhead for deployment, upgrades, and incident recovery.
* Delivery waste - friction and delay in development, testing, and deployment.
* Product waste - misalignment to business value, detach from use cases, push driven development, vanity quality assurance.
We will primarily focus on technical solutions, but some of the waste mentioned requires organisational refactoring to eliminate.

Ignition 8.1 was released in late 2020, bringing many exciting new features like Perspective Workstation, Perspective Symbols, Power Chart, and plenty more. Ignition 8.2 will still be in the works for a while, but that doesn't mean that you have to wait long for new features and improvements. The Ignition software development team puts out “release train” updates nearly every month, and each one comes loaded with significant features that are based on user requests.
Cybersecurity is a moving target. The techniques and technologies of yesteryear won’t necessarily protect your system in this highly interconnected era of IIoT-enabled systems. As attacks on industrial control systems become increasingly commonplace, it’s more vital than ever to stay up to date on the latest in security best practices to mitigate risk and maintain peace of mind.
The traditional human-machine interface (HMI) is a hardware-and-software solution used to view and track data in all kinds of industrial settings. Lately, supply-chain problems have led to long wait times when ordering traditional HMIs. But don't worry: It’s easy to turn any panel PC into an Ignition HMI solution, and in this webinar we'll show you how!
In our smartphone-dominated world, developers need to make HMI screens and applications that will look great on small, medium, and large devices. Are you familiar with the mobile-responsive layout strategies that make this possible?
After navigating many unforeseen challenges in 2020 and 2021, how should system integrators move forward in 2022? Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

17. Digital Transformation Pain Points
Digital Transformation Pain Points
● Where there is a shared focus toward improvement, there are
common pain points
● A Digital Transformation Pain Point is anything that makes
transforming a company through integration of IIoT-enabled
technologies more difficult to build, implement, or maintain
● Pain points can range from small issues to large, project-derailing
problems
● Digital Transformation pain points can be solved with the right mix
of technology, mindset, planning, and organizational support
18. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Lack of Buy-in
Lack of Buy-in
● If key stakeholders won’t buy into your Digital Transformation
initiatives, you’re either in for an uphill battle or the project is dead on
arrival
● Keep in mind that buy-in comes not only from key stakeholders but
also operators on the floor and anyone who will be using the
application
19. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Lack of Buy-in
Solutions
● Understand the needs of key stakeholders
● Look for solutions that OT and IT can both get behind
● Focus on big-picture goals
○ Benefits that stretch across the organization
● Look for ‘quick wins’ that will build support and momentum
20. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Disruption of Usual Procedures
Disruption of Usual Procedures
● Redistribution of resources can be challenging
● Workflow/daily routines may be impacted
● Disruption from Digital Transformation can affect morale
21. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Disruption of Usual Procedures
Solutions
● Explain the necessity of changes to team members
● Give team members a forum to voice their questions and concerns
● Resources may need to be allocated differently than in the past, so
prioritize wisely
● Use the right technology solution to minimize disruption to your
operations
22. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Unclear or Unrealistic Goals
Unclear or Unrealistic Goals
● Digital Transformation can be a broad concept, but a successful
project is predicated on tangible results
● It’s not enough to simply say “I want to digitally transform my
organization” – you need to decide how processes will be improved
● Unrealistic goals are not exclusive to Digital Transformation, but
having goals that are specific makes achieving them possible
23. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Unclear or Unrealistic Goals
Solutions
● Instead of chasing tech trends or buzzwords, go after real problems.
○ Results over concepts
● Analyze your process and identify areas in need of improvement
○ Speed
○ Efficiency
○ Downtime
● Define the goal, the method, and your measure of improvement
● “What does success look like for your project?”
24. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Communication Barriers
Communication Barriers
● Execution of a project can be derailed by poor communication across
devices
● Lack of access to real-time data makes it hard for people to do their
jobs properly
● Current supply chain issues make interoperability a necessity
○ Organizations have been turning to technology that’s more flexible
in order to continue moving forward during delay of supplies
25. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Communication Barriers
Solutions
● Open standards
○ Ignition ties into other systems (like ERP) and has open standards
and drivers
● Integrate a dispersed network with the right architecture
26. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Cost
The Cost Factor
● This is the oldest and most persistent pain point
● Whether it’s a single process upgrade or enterprise-wide overhaul,
every project has a budget, but it’s always smaller than you want it to
be
27. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Cost
Solutions
● Pay by the server and add as many clients, screens, tags, devices, or
connections as needed for no extra cost under Ignition’s unlimited
licensing
● Download Ignition for free and refresh the 2-hour trial as long as
needed
● Ignition is modular – pay only for what you need
28. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Time-Consuming Tasks
Time-Consuming Tasks
● Some tasks can be overly time-consuming, require too much effort, or
be downright impossible to complete
● These kinds of tasks can disrupt a Digital Transformation project’s
timeline
● Having to provide information repeatedly takes up valuable time
● Some tasks can be overwhelming for an individual person
29. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Time-Consuming Tasks
Solutions
● When things seem too time-consuming, difficult, or risky, you can try
Ignition on a trial basis
● Ignition allows unlimited people to work on a project simultaneously
without paying for extra designers
● Try rapid project development methodologies and tools
○ Scrum
○ Ignition Designer
○ Templates
30. Pain Point: Slow ROI
Slow ROI
● If ROI isn’t fast enough to meet expectations, frustrations and
impatience can result
● Higher cost = slower ROI
● Slow ROI can hinder additional funding/support of further Digital
Transformation initiatives
31. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Slow ROI
Solutions
● Use Ignition to maximize and speed up ROI with:
○ Unlimited licensing
○ Optimized deployment, maintenance, and uptime
○ Digitization

● Set realistic expectations for stakeholders
32. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Difficulty Leveraging Information
Difficulty Finding, Understanding, or Leveraging Information
● There’s no point in using IIoT-enabled technologies to collect all this
data if you don’t have any way to use it
○ Data access
○ Context
○ Actionable insights
33. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Difficulty Leveraging Information
Solutions
● Ignition breaks down data silos and gathers information from the plant
floor to the edge to the cloud, and lets you see it on desktop, mobile,
or most any device.
● Recent features:
○ Tag Report Tool
○ Machine Learning Manager:
https://inductiveautomation.com/exchange/2365/overview
34. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Support Issues
Support Issues
● We all need support sometimes, whether it’s during development,
deployment, or while a system is operational
● Needing support itself can seem like a pain point, but really it’s not
getting the right support or not being aware of available support
35. SCADA Pain Points
Pain Point: Support Issues
Solutions
● Inductive Automation has an excellent support division
○ You can choose the support level that is best for your organization
● Ignition Ecosystem of partnering companies
○ Onboard devices
