Overall sketch idea
1. This is the model of the entire stage that the set designer has produced. This is what everybody
who was building and constructing the set had to refer to to ensure continuity throughout.
My design for Stage Right upper tier (based on ideas from
GC2: Ideas, Drawings & Idea Justification:
Balcony railings
Large bricks to distinguish
between apartments
Crescent shaped window
with bricks forming a
pattern on top for
aesthetics
Washing line for a sense
of realism
Hanging basket for a
sense of realism
Fire escape to capture the
image of a typical
Manhattan apartment
Crescent shaped window
to create continuity on the
set
2. Overall collective sketch for Stage Right upper tier:
This is the final sketch design that we collectively came up with as a group. We have taken
individual ideas from each person’s individual sketch.
Ivy to make the buildings seem
old and worn and to add
character/a sense of realismto
the set
Fire escape to capture the image
of a typical Manhattan apartment
Washing line to bring a sense of
realismto the set and give the
impression that someone lives in
the building
Drain pipe wrapped in ivy to give
character to the set and make the
building look scruffy
Beaded curtains to make it seem
like someone lives in the building
and to make it look dated
Hanging basket to make it seemlike
someone is living in the building and
contrast between the dark colours

3. Although we worked in a team to create the
whole of Upper Stage Right, we each had a
specific piece of scenery from that area that we
were responsible for producing. This is my final
individual design for a specific flat on Stage
Right. It’s labelled “T2” because it is on the top
tier of the set and the 2nd flat along. The
measurements of the flat are: 1.22m wide x
1.9m high. The colour of the flat is “Wholemeal”
brown because we wanted to achieve a run-
down look using dark, earthy colours. The whole
set is to be painted in these colours because
continuity is important in making the set look as
professional as possible.
Bottom of the fire escape. The top of the fire
escape continues on the first flat. This will be
made out of wood and then painted black to
look authentic and dirty.
Patterned bricks. This is purely to add character
to the building and this pattern continues along
the whole of Stage Right Upper Tier – again
continuity is very important in order to look
professional. These will be made out of
polystyrene to give a rough texture and then
painted brown to look like a brick.
Ivy from the window. This is to make the
building look aged. We will source ivy from the
props cupboard.
Netted curtain. This is to make the apartment
look aged and make it look as though an elderly
person lives there – in the script, the
Grandmother lives in this apartment.
