An outline is a tool used to organize written ideas about a topic in a logical order. There are two main types of outlines - sentence outlines and topic outlines. A sentence outline presents the thesis statement, major topics, subtopics, and supporting details in sentence form using formatting like Roman numerals and capital letters. A topic outline presents the same elements in the form of words and phrases. An effective outline includes a thesis statement, major topics, subtopics, and supporting details. Outlining helps to show the relationship between ideas, simplify writing, and effectively organize one's thoughts.

The topic for an argumentative research paper must be a debatable topic, meaning that it involves conflicting viewpoints. Additionally, it cannot be a topic that is already decided or agreed upon by most of society. You will need to take a firm position on the topic and use evidence and logic to support the position. Review the Final Research Project instructions located in Week Five. To help with the preparation of the paper, complete the following items and submit them to your instructor as a single document.
Introduction to Topic:
Refer to the Final Research Project guidelines for your topic selection. Thesis statement:
Write a direct and concise thesis statement, which will become the point or perspective you will argue or prove in the Final Research Project. Annotated Bibliography:
To help prepare for your Final Research Project, write an annotated bibliography to indicate the quality of the sources you have read. The bibliography must include no less than five scholarly sources that will be used to support the major points of the Final Research Project. Critical thinking skills need to be demonstrated by accurately interpreting evidence used to support various positions of the topic. Helpful Hints - Follow these guidelines to complete your outline:
1. Title the outline - write the title of your paper at the top of the page.

3. Subtopics for each main topic are labeled A, B, C, etc.
4. Details for subtopics are labeled 1, 2, 3, etc.
5. Subdetails or examples for details are labeled a, b, c, etc.
6. Use a period after each division letter or number. Do not place periods after topics or
subtopics not stated in the form of a sentence.
7. Begin the main topic, subtopics, and details with capital letters.

switch to sentences.

Congratulations! You made it to your final assignment, and you have learned so much along the way.
• In the personal essay, you learned how to write with a strong personal voice.

Now in your final assignment, you will combine these writing techniques to write a stance essay. A stance essay takes a
position on a topic and argues and supports that position with evidence. Consider your topic:
• What possible positions/arguments are there?
• What position resonates with you? (Which position do you believe is correct?)
• What are your main points?
• What are the counterpoints? Are you ready to dispute them?
• Do you have enough evidence to effectively support your argument?
For the stance essay, your personal voice (your perspective) should come through. This is just like assignment 1, except
you should maintain a formal tone. And just like assignment 2, you will need to support your points with credible sources.

Helpful Hints - Follow these guidelines to complete your outline:
1. Title the outline - write the title of your paper at the top of the page.
2. Follow the sample outline format for numbering and lettering. Main ideas are chief
points. Label them I, II, III, etc. Each main topic must include at least two subtopics.
3. Subtopics for each main topic are labeled A, B, C, etc.
4. Details for subtopics are labeled 1, 2, 3, etc.
5. Subdetails or examples for details are labeled a, b, c, etc.
6. Use a period after each division letter or number. Do not place periods after topics or
subtopics not stated in the form of a sentence.
7. Begin the main topic, subtopics, and details with capital letters.
8. Maintain a parallel structure throughout the outline; if you start with phrases, don't
switch to sentences.
9. Indent as shown in the example. You should be able to draw a line through all the
periods after Roman numerals, another through all the periods after capital letters, etc.

Congratulations! You made it to your final assignment, and you have learned so much along the way.
• In the personal essay, you learned how to write with a strong personal voice.
• In the informative essay, you learned how to write objectively and support your points with credible sources to
inform the audience.
Now in your final assignment, you will combine these writing techniques to write a stance essay. A stance essay takes a
position on a topic and argues and supports that position with evidence. Consider your topic:
• What possible positions/arguments are there?
• What position resonates with you? (Which position do you believe is correct?)
• What are your main points?
• What are the counterpoints? Are you ready to dispute them?
• Do you have enough evidence to effectively support your argument?
For the stance essay, your personal voice (your perspective) should come through. This is just like assignment 1, except
you should maintain a formal tone. And just like assignment 2, you will need to support your points with credible sources.
You’re ready to take a position on the topic you have been writing about and to be persuasive!
INSTRUCTIONS:
Compose a three-four (3-4) page paper in which you do the following:
1. Use third person point of view (POV) and the appropriate voice and tone throughout your paper.
